It's one thing that keeps catching me out. Like, Liverpool has a Santa Dash every year and some Everton supporters wear blue Santa outfits, but it's just A Bit Of Fun, not a Police Are On Alert situation.

Watching the Traitors is very instructive for this. People making the wrong assumptions about other people based on little to no evidence. Even ones who come in with an umderstanding of human behaviour and knowledge of prior seasons make the same mistakes. Humans are silly.

One thing I've learned from a depressing number of experiences with creeps in professional spaces: we'd be better off if we all accepted that we are, by and large, terrible judges of character

Assumed this was a parody of a real quote. Checked. Realised it was real. Screamed internally.

NVIDIA CEO JENSEN HUANG SAYS HE BELIEVES MOST PEOPLE IN GERMANY WILL MOSTLY WORK INSIDE A DIGITAL TWIN OF THEIR COMPANY, BUILDING DIGITAL CARS WITH DIGITAL BRAINS, WITH AI ROBOTS BUILDING ROBOTIC CARS INSIDE ROBOTIC FACTORIES

Okay, I might have missed something, but what's with the wierdly specific "iced coffee"? Is that code for "gay people"? "Women"? "People who never served in the army"?

Kai Ryssdal@kairyssdal.bsky.social

I’m sorry, but if you bring an iced coffee - or any damn beverage at all - to a job interview, you’re disqualified. It’s not hard, people.

"In these situations, you really find out who your friends are" I think the people you've known for years saying to their multi-millionaire friend "Ed, I think you've got this one wrong" are probably more your friends than those going "oh Ed, you are correct about everything and you smell lovely".

Oh no Americans are replying to this (deliberately) ambigiously worded headline.

The first match at Anfied after Charles was coronated began with them piping God Save the King over the stadium speakers. Which resulted in a minute of solid booing. I was very proud.

A Reform government would force schools to sing the National Anthem and if they don't oblige parents will be encouraged to report them to the authorities. Yeah that's not like really scary and authoritarian schoolsweek.co.uk/reform-there...

Just found out I was blocked by a semi-famous comedian back on the 1st August, and looking at my posts on that day it was largely an anal conversation in reply to an ABK skit regarding Scrooge McDuck's accent. I am genuinly curious to know if that got me banned.

Okay I'm going to need check-ins on Dick Van Dyke, Tom Baker, Christopher Lloyd, Quentin Blake and David Jason at least every six hours. Get detachments out to McCartney, Dench and Palin. And I want 24-hour full-team monitoring on Attenborough. Move, people, move!

As far as I can understand, this is like if Trump's behaviour was so toxic it somehow managed to make Scotland cheer on England at the football.

The United States' ridiculous demand that Canada remove French to secure a trade deal—a shoddy attempt at weakening our sovereignty/making an economic 51st state—is having the absolutely hilarious effect of uniting Quebec and the rest of Canada. Y'all have no idea how hilarious and improbable it is

I've just logged on to X for the first time in a year to check Glinner's profile, and it really is unhinged. Every single post is either screaming at people with pronouns in their bio, or just general waffle about "protecting women from men in dresses". It's just sad.

Harold Wilson, with a majority of four, had the courage to say that the winner of the Smethwick by-election would be greeted “like a leper” in Parliament. Ted Heath, trailing in the polls, fired Enoch Powell. The comparison with the Labour government and Conservative opposition now..oy.

Sam Freedman@samfr.bsky.social

I know it's only a PCC election with low turnout but 11% for a party that happily accepts neo-Nazis as members is really bad.

Hmm. Reading the quotes, it almost looks like the National has put words in to Alexander's mouth to make his statement sound more extreme than it was just to stir up anti-English sentiment. Surely not?

BREAKING: Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander has urged Scots to back England against Argentina in the World Cup semi-final He said Scots fans should be 'bigger' than being 'anti-English'

Honestly, are people looking at this and thinking that this is anything other than Greggs doing "banter" for attention/publicity? Like, you can think it's a rubbish joke, but it's also clearly a joke. "Freedom Fries" was anything but.

Fourfoot@fourfoot.bsky.social

England is insane.

People DO get that the Gregg's Mexican food notice thing is just a cheeky joke, right? It's not like "Freedom Fries" which (I believe) was genuinly out of a sense of miaguided patriotism. No-one is boycotting Mexican (well, as close as we get to Mexican) food. It's just a bit of fun.

Took the boy to his first pro union festival in Paisley. Told him the guy being burned was part of the 1% and he deserved it.

The Toryiyama one on the third image is especially hilarious, because he's actually left in the original eye outline (Goku style open eyes) and then drawn another set of eyes further in.

I need someone I trust to tell me if the "Europeans hate air conditioning thing because of racism" is making a good point or not. I've not got the brain energy to try and figure it out for myself.

I dunno. I'm pretty sure "refusing to put the central heating on until it's cold enough that you can see your breath" is a universal British dad trait.

Imperial boomerang: for centuries, Europeans have framed tech to protect against cold (fire, furnaces) as noble and good, while they’ve framed the warm climates they colonized as full of lazy people (Asians, Africans) and, thus, the need to use AC or fans as frivaloues, wasteful & unnecessary

Frankly, this is as astonishing as someone writing an article in the paper about how hard it was when they found out that their white daughter was going out with a black man.

Can't believe we got both "the riots in Northern Ireland would have gone better if more people had guns" AND "agriculture is bad because it caused slavery" in the same week.

Even aside from, y'know, the whole history of NI, does this person not realise what has happened in the US in just the last year? Do they think that things would have worked out better for everyone if those non-white people had pointed their legally owned firearms at ICE officers?

The second amendment can be hard to defend because when things are going even moderately all right, you do not need to own a gun When shit like this starts happening, though, it's a damn good right to have

its also a good time to remind people not to 'no true Scotsman' the Irish as incapable of racism. The same rioting happened in Dublin in 2023, & people in Scotland also like to imagine we're immune to racism. Oppressed groups are just as capable of hatred as anyone else, as we've seen in Israel.

Love how we've decided that groups of young men dressed in black with their faces hidden walking around setting fire to vehicles and houses are now "protests" and not "violent hooliganism".

A different take on that statement from an archaeologist 💯💯💯🎯

I love Babylon 5 but I got to a point where I thought stuff like this was a bit too clunkly and lacking the subtlety of how it would happen in reality. I was wrong.

Long before ANDOR, BABYLON 5 warned us of how fascism raises quitely and slowly until it feels “normalized.” Heck, even predicted the use of blonde-haired woman used as the “pleasant” face of the movement. And the use of “aliens” as the scapegoat.

Section 28 was passed on this day in 1988. It didn’t come out of nowhere. It came from a society where 75% of people thought homosexuality was wrong. It came from a society that believed ignorance was better for children than any knowledge of lesbian or gay lives. 🧵 1/16

It's okay everyone. We just need to persecute two or three more minorities and then you will finally be able to get a doctor's appointment.
