I went to the front lines of new American tax revolt — the largest flea market in northeast Ohio — to write about how a meme that paying property taxes means you never own your house has taken over the country. www.politico.com/news/magazin...

“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?” Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century.

Took a tour of the Stahl House a couple years ago and it was absolutely spectacular. Also, even though it was a normal day, the wind got so noisy as night fell that it was barely possible to have a conversation.

Years ago I interviewed Houston Mayor Annise Parker who told me one of the main reasons the city was able to cut homelessness by so much is she forced all the governments and nonprofits into a room and made them use the same data system. Meanwhile in LA www.latimes.com/california/s...

Housing construction is not up 59% since 2018. To get that number Newsom is comparing incomplete data from 2018 — missing San Diego and other big cities — to more complete data from 2024. So his number captures changed response rates not that level of increased production.

After the massive 2025 wildfire, there was no greater political enemy in the Pacific Palisades than LA Mayor Karen Bass. Yet Palisades voters, who trend more conservative than the rent of the city, remain wary of Bass' DSA-endorsed opponent Nithya Raman www.politico.com/news/2026/09...

politico.comThe Palisades is furious with Karen Bass. Nithya Raman still has a hard sell.Fire-scarred Pacific Palisades has emerged as a key battleground in the Los Angeles mayoral election — for both its many undecided voters and potent symbolism.

Also, some weirdness around Bass' embrace of LA Councilmember Traci Park who has been on the warpath against Raman. Bass' campaign has talked about deploying Park as a surrogate. But Park hasn't endorsed the mayor and has "deep concerns about the leadership and effectiveness of both candidates."

Of the many problems facing SRO Housing, Skid Row's largest homeless housing provider, one is familiar to many developers — market-rate and affordable — in LA. Its CEO told me that the opening of new building was delayed because the city-run utility didn't connect electricity.

The problems facing SRO Housing Corp have been well-known since at least 2023 when another major Skid Row landlord disintegrated, revealing systemic challenges with operating supportive housing in century-old buildings, many of which have shared bathrooms www.latimes.com/homeless-hou...

Bay Area lawmaker @buffywicks.bsky.social's bid to advance a Los Angeles affordable housing development just passed the state Senate, leaving it an Assembly vote away from clearing the Legislature. Even though LA Mayor Karen Bass and others oppose the project they've not fought Wicks' bill.

Fantastic reporting here by Libby Rainey that confirms what we've been hearing about the "clean zones" around LA28 venues: "Carter Hewgley, chief strategy officer for L.A. County’s Department of Homeless Services and Housing, said his office had been told to plan for perimeters as wide as a mile"

laist.comThe LA Olympics is expected to displace unhoused people living around venues. So what's the plan?L.A. officials say people living on the streets will likely have to leave certain areas come 2028. They don't know how they'll be moved or who will pay for it.

Rebuilding in Pacific Palisades and Altadena from the 2025 LA wildfires is close or at to some milestones, per @politico.com tracker: * 148 completed homes * Almost half of the 9,900 properties with destroyed homes have filed permits to rebuild

Obviously the Raman-Pratt battle is the headline but it’s also quite significant that Bass’ high-water mark appears to have been the first drop of results where she was over 38%. Now she’s below 35%. Especially interesting compared to what happened four years ago

Bass did stronger than expected and Becerra is almost certain to advance following yesterday's California primary. Lots of votes left to count, and takes to warm up but our first is the anti-establishment current coursing through the state has its limits www.politico.com/news/2026/06...

The city of Los Angeles lost a lawsuit over a megacontroversial affordable housing project its been trying to block in Venice this week. Last fall, the state threatened to pull the city's zoning authority if it didn't approve the development. subscriber.politicopro.com/article/2026...

Voters: We want infrastructure faster and cheaper. Abundance Politicians: Us too. Let's strip away regulations to make it happen. Voters: No. Because you can't build infrastructure we don't trust what you'll do with weakened regulations. www.politico.com/news/2026/05...

I don’t know why Karen Bass keeps saying that rebuilding in the Palisades is going faster than other California fires. The @ms.now anchor even pushes her on it later in the interview and she admits it’s not
