My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

Don't really give a shit about James Bond, but which part of Jack Lowden's oeuvre am I missing that got him this far? I guess if Hugh Laurie can become an American heartthrob anything's possible.

Callum Turner, Jack Lowden, and Josh O’Connor will all apparently be doing their final screen tests to play 007 in the next week.

I am generally of the opinion that if you're doing terminal heroics, something's probably gone badly wrong, which probably explains that I was today years old when I found out xargs -P is like 50 times faster than GNU parallel?

I have four big jugs and naturally I named them after the protagonists of the Year of Four Emperors. My history tutor always insisted Otho was the only good emperor because he chose suicide over the death of his men in battle. But until the praetorians show up I’ve been impressed by Galba so far.

LOUIS THEROUX: (shouting at ceiling) Hi Wallace, it's Louis. Are you coming down? V.O.: I'd been told to expect the unexpected when Wallace came down for breakfast. WALLACE: Be there in a minute! Enjoy the show! LOUIS: (to Gromit) Is this normal?

Tell them to go fuck themselves. Revisit the British Business Bank proposals to allow pension funds to invest more risk capital. Remove the stupid six month longstop on SEIS for ASAs. Find more ways to get angels out in secondary rounds. You can have a million cakes and absolutely gorge on them.

UAE warns Andy Burnham it may pull billions in investment for the UK's proposed Oxford-Cambridge tech hubβ€”dubbed the UK's Silicon Valleyβ€”in retaliation over Manchester City's guilty verdict, per The Telegraph.

Panicked that my obscenely expensive graphics card had died, but there was a power cut overnight and a bad CMOS battery meant that it had wiped some BIOS settings the card needed to boot. Went to a computer shop and asked for their oldest graphics card (a GT 730!) just to boot once and fix it.

We found a lot of old VHS tapes in our storage and have started to digitalize them. Some of the interviews were broadcasted on Dutch TV, so they are in Dutch. Please let us know what you think? We'll try to add more in the next couple of months. XO, the Betties www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...

I know it’s a privileged position, but you should just allow yourself to miss opportunities to work with uptight weirdos.

The "iced coffee at an interview" thing is driving me insane because apparently it's lost cultural knowledge that you're not supposed to be eating or drinking when conducting a certain level of serious business with another person.

Anyway, yes modern life is rubbish, and honest, open communication with friends is nourishing. But it’s not your friends and family’s job to cure your mental illness, so sometimes those conversations have to be about treatment (which might include pills!)

Some good stuff in here, including a shout out to @dvatvani.bsky.social et al’s work on the StatsBomb xG model and its approach to outliers. Also I maintain that there is no such thing as possession value, just value, and therefore there is no right β€˜window’ for PV models.

A model-heavy newsletter today, with lots of thoughts on the decisions we make when building something. This week's Post-Match Report:

Easy to be smug that I don’t know any of the people here, but I watch loads of stuff on YouTube and Patreon, so it sort of goes to show the long tail is very real. We should be deeply heartened by that!

it’s that time of year again, Rolling Stone released their list of the top 25 content creators, which is actually a test of how old and out of touch you are… the lower your score, the more out of touch i’ve heard of 11 out of 25

Good news, everyone.

A study reveals AI out-persuades expert humans in various contexts, including fundraising, even after coaching. AI's nearly 3x effectiveness in raising donations underscores significant implications for political communication and human-AI interaction. https://arxiv.org/abs/2606.16475

I remember curating directories of church websites in the 90s. Each one had dancing Jesus gifs, spinning gold crosses, burning bushes, MARQUEE tags. I remember all of us with tenner a month Demon websites. It’s not only AI that professionalises and homogenises everything, that’s just capitalism.

The more GEN AI creeps into everyday life the more people will miss the amateur art around them. School murals done by students, hole-in-the-wall restaurant menus put together by an employee using free clipart, even "bad" paintings done at a drink and paint event-Things with human imperfections.

The original Gusto in Sheffield before they had kids and downsized. I have had parmigiana hundreds of times since, hoping to recapture that magic, but nobody can do to an aubergine what that woman could.
