“Scientists have calculated that the chances of something so patently absurd actually existing are millions to one. But magicians have calculated that million-to-one chances crop up nine times out of ten.” —Terry Pratchett, MORT

Every time I plant a seed, I marvel that this is a tiny bundle of instructions on how to interact with the environment: find molecules of water and minerals, and use collected energy to assemble them into a full plant, then duplicate its own packet of programming and drop it on the ground nearby

So now he says, "I am the code!" when referring to ignoring and bypassing safety concerns and building codes, especially too few exit routes, during the Epstein Ballroom construction. This may be a self-solving problem.

OK, I'll jump in... "Optimist: The glass is half-full. Pessimist: The glass is half-empty." Scientist: The glass is completely full, half with water, the rest with air and water vapor; Engineer: The glass is twice as big as it needs to be

Re: "Just one US oil company drilling in Greenland": Russia: " We had to send in the army to protect Russians in Crimea"; Israel: "We had to send in the army to protect Israeli settlers in the West Bank"; The US: "We had to send in troops to protect the fruit companies in the Hawai'ian Kingdom";

The US: "We had to send in the cavalry to protect the homesteaders moving west"; England: "We had to occupy India to protect the European traders"... Does anyone see a pattern here?

This Aussie is spot on, it will take years or decades to get rid of capitalism from the government. It’s not just Trump, it’s everything behind him, oligarchs, money, corruption, corporations etc. How can we fix this?

How can one man disrupt the entire world so thoroughly? One man can't. His rantings are only dangerous if there are hundreds of people who will benefit from carrying them out.

I've decided that whenever Trump starts rambling, I may just add a laugh track. If we're going to live in a sitcom, we might as well acknowledge it.

We're to the tech stage where we can close all zoos and aquariums and replace them with giant screens showing feeds of cameras in the wild, showing the same animals. There's no longer any justification to capture and imprison them for entertainment. Rehabilitation, yes, but that's a different idea.

Every once in a while, I check with LLMs about whether I can get accurate answers yet: "How can I get an accurate answer to a question?" Gemini's response: "The absolute best way to prevent an AI from making things up is to give it the answers beforehand and tell it not to look anywhere else."

Organic food has been defined, commodified, regulated, and tested, and now has certifying stickers. When will human-created writing and literature have the same treatment to distinguish it from AI-generated?

I've already seen a few headers identifying a written article as 'human produced'. What will be the eventually accepted label for certification? 'Human-Produced'? 'Organically Written'? 'Org Lit'?

How long will it be until the trump/maga sitcom? "F Troop" and "Hogan's Heroes" had to wait a few years after the events to risk humor. Current events are ridiculous enough to get moving on it. Most of the laugh lines are already there; just use direct quotes.

Given the proof that becoming President is a sure way to delay going to prison for crimes, I predict a huge slate of Republicans vying for the nomination for 2028.

I'm thankful today that the guy plastering the White House with tacky spray-painted crap is dimwitted and incompetent. Just think of how much worse this all could be had he been intelligent and competent!

Just got back from our local rally. Peaceful, lots of dialogue, many American flags flown respectfully, signs with Constitution and Declaration quotes... And during the march segment, all participants followed traffic and pedestrian signals.

The reason the FCC was founded was that the two emerging media, radio and TV, used a limited electromagnetic broadcast range. Overlap and duplication of frequencies needed to be avoided. The internet doesn't have that limitation, so I believe that attempts to regulate it will fail.

As comics, hosts, and news presenters are ejected from network TV, most will continue to thrive on the internet, just as silent film and vaudeville actors moved to "talkies", then to TV. The medium will change, but the message and messengers will endure.

Along the lines of "Hogan's Heroes", satirizing truly horrible times: In the inevitable sitcom about the trump years, who will portray a bumbling, ignorant, self-aggrandizing president, always being laughed at whenever he exits a room? Zero Mostel and Walter Matthau would have been perfect.
