I write humble SF stories of humble characters thrust into extraordinary situations, and grand epic tales of heroes at the horizon of wonder.

Overshoot. First draft of novel nearly done. Was aiming for 65k words to max 90k. Projected length: 125000 words. Oops. Deleting characters and plotlines will be painful. #iwritespecfic

Just watched the 1936 film #ThingsToCome. It was a prescient look ahead at what happens to a society when the marvels of technology have made people too comfortable. Too much a morality play for my taste, but like all good #sciencefiction, it explores important social themes. And itโ€™s a visual treat

Am I wrong, or has the definition of #spaceopera gradually broadened to mean any story set in the far future? I hope not. The narrower definition - melodramatic adventures in a universe of galactic empires and faster-than-light travel - used to be a good indicator of stuff I don't want to read.

If you're wondering why authors are getting so rabid here: First Anthropic stole our books. Then we got denied compensation because of US unjust copyright law and publishers failing to meet their contractual obligations. Then publishers and agents apparently claimed author shares. Now this.

@courtneymilan.com I just pulled this from a post over on Facebook, felt like it might be info worth sharing...

Now reading: Sawyer On Science Fiction. I'm not far in yet, but as I expected, so far thereโ€™s no shortage of incisive insights. โœ๏ธ๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ›ธ๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ›ธ๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ›ธ๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ›ธ๐Ÿช #SawyerOnScienceFiction #sciencefiction @robertjsawyer.com ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿช

โ€œTruth is, thereโ€™s very little ambitious science fiction left; most of what little is still published is fungible military SF or space opera with no intellectual or emotional heft. The genre that was once rich with speculation and social comment has shrunk to a tiny puddle of escapism.โ€ (Yup.)

Iโ€™ve fallen behind on #Sci-fiMovies I want to watch, but Iโ€™m starting to catch up. This week I watched #Metropolis (1927, directed by Fritz Lang), and, Wow! Special effects have come a long way since Le Voyage dans La Lune. Next, I think Iโ€™ll watch H.G. Wellsโ€™ Things to Come. Itโ€™s a โ€œtalkieโ€! ๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ›ธ๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ›ธ๐Ÿš€

In the best SF, the world the author creates is not just โ€œsettingโ€; it becomes a character in the story and vehicle for exploring ideas. I recently finished Tchaikovskyโ€™s Children of Time, which does this brilliantly. ๐Ÿช๐Ÿ“š #sciencefiction #worldbuilding #childrenoftime

The #PublicLendingRight program of the Canada Council for the Arts provides modest payments to creators to compensate them for their books in public libraries. I just received my very small, but very heartwarming payment for 2025. This feels like what a civilized country does. ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ #BringTheArtsToLife

Lately Iโ€™ve been enjoying old sci-fi movies from the dawn of cinema. My favorite so far is the 1927 film Alfalfopolis, in which a coven of millennia-old beings who do not age and appear as children battle against wealthy industrialists who have taken control of the world. #fritzlang #scifimovies

Despite its flaws (which are quite overblown), Wikipedia is amazing. It gives you a tiny hint of what some of us back in early '90s imagined the Internet could become (what it might have become if not for the Googles and Facebooks).
