So excited! Nocturnal Worlds, my show at Waterstone Gallery, opens Oct 1 For >year, I’ve recorded my brainwaves while asleep & kept a sleep diary I transformed nighttime data of deep sleep, dreams & insomnia into paintings and prints to explore the mysterious inner world of sleep. #sciart #pdxart

Going into the last week of the Nocturnal Worlds exhibit. Meeting this morning to tour the exhibit with a neuroscientist to talk about a future collaboration. He originally met me in my old studio over a decade ago during an open studio. That interaction inspired him! #sciart #portland

Good Morning! What a joy it is to read the ‘Nocturnal Worlds’ exhibit guest book. “Lessons of… “ Now I’m curious about this! #sciart #sleep #portlandart

He did not introduce himself at the time. Turns out years later I had connected with one of his former students. Yes, Portland is a small world! Turns out, he had also attended an SfN talk that my grandfather had given. That must have been a long time ago.

Was hanging outside a library with a friend when a man asked if we might help him figure out where to drop off his ballot. We directed him to the book drop that had a sign saying it was an official ballot drop off. He looked surprised as if to say “Wait, it’s that easy?!” Yes, it’s that easy. 💥

In Oregon, ‘vote by mail’ includes being able to drop off your ballot at libraries and official drop boxes. I’m not sure I’ve ever mailed in my ballot, as I enjoy dropping my ballot off at the library.

Found some prized Matsutake last week! Truly a joy to find these hiding under the duff. Smell like cinnamon and radishes to me ( the book says red hots and gym socks - iykyk). #fungifriday 🌿🍄‍🟫

Happy #fungifriday 🌿 Found this in such an odd spot along a popular hiking trail. Clearly folks do not know what they are walking by! A King Bolete 👑

I say it’s an odd spot only because it is so close to the city. Typically one needs to get out in the woods to find these beauties. Popped up in the exact same spots as last year! Knowing where the mycelium is; it’s like knowing about an underground fruiting tree.

From my Artist Talk on Sunday at Waterstone Gallery. An engaged and curious audience with thoughtful questions about sleep, dreams, and personal experiences with insomnia made for a lively conversation. I gesticulate when talking about the claustrum and slow wave sleep! #sciart #scicomm #portland

How does one depict a state one is not conscious of? The painting on the left is called ‘Slow Waves in the Midnight Deep’ with a ghostly figure upside down in monochromatic blues surrounded by a week of sleep data. She is unconscious- her hair filled with undulating waves. Lost to the world.

This stage of deep sleep thought to be important for memory consolidation. When you look at the brainwave activity for deep sleep you see high amplitude, low frequency delta waves.

“We don't see things as they are, we see them as we are” - Anis Nin People’s readings of your artwork tells you oh so so much about their inner world.

Was looking forward to some mental stimulation this morning, but every seat was taken. Congrats on the full house!

Good morning! Today at 11am, I’ll be sharing the stories, science and creative process behind my latest work exploring deep sleep, dreams, memory and insomnia at Waterstone Gallery #Portland #sciart I should be getting ready. Hope to see some of you there!

I’ll share how my paintings and an installation combined my own EEG brainwave recordings during sleep with dream diaries and personal experiences to map the mind’s elusive inner landscapes.

I’ll also talk about what I learned about what we know ( and don’t know) about deep sleep, insomnia and touch on new science of dream engineering!

A wonderful audience for Science on Tap talking about the art & science of sleep, dreams, memory and insomnia! Full house and fantastic questions! Thank you to the amazing folks at Science on Tap and the delightful Master of Ceremonies Dr. Jess Herbert @jesshebert.bsky.social 🐡 #scicomm

In 2016, I used blue light for my 'Cerebral Wilderness' neuron art installation as nod to optogenetics! ✨ Why blue light? The foundational experiments by @deisseroth.bsky.social that launched the Nobel Prize winning technology of optogenetics in 2005 used blue light at ~ 470 nm #sciart 🧪

Of course I was also highlighting the perineuronal net structures surrounding neurons thought to be important for memory from research out of Dr. Sorg’s lab. That’s the netted fabric wrapping around the neurons in this installation. They were using optogenetics as part of that research.

Most people had not heard of optogenetics, so it might turn into a conversation about opsins, and inserting neurons with genes that came from algae. Hopefully more people will understand how cool this is after today! ✨

Crick speculated later that to “turn the firing of one or more types of neurons on and off in the alert animal in a rapid manner … the ideal signal would be light” an idea he acknowledged was “rather far-fetched” at the time.

‘Try to Love the Questions’ block print, gold ink and graphite on old geologic map An anatomical valentine for #SciArtSeptember day 11 : #heart #maps #printmaking

My brother was in town and took some photos of me in my studio. The first is what I should use for my artist portrait… but the second brain toss shot is more fun, right?

The 🧠 toss is a nod to NWNoggin @nwnoggin.bsky.social, the group that got me tossing brains for neuroscience outreach. We bring real brains into classrooms … we only toss the 3D models though. Been so deep in the studio prepping for next week’s show that I haven’t had much time outside it lately.
