Apparently someone had the genius idea to make October Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Please tell whoever that was that WE ARE AWARE already, thank you.

The entire technical maintenance environment has changed, now. Vulnerabilities can no longer be patched "in a couple of days". They have to be done immediately because kids with AI agents will get hold of these known weaknesses and use them immediately.

I totally DO NOT want to kick a vital coalition while it's down, so to speak. But I do want to say to organizers in the current environment: Choose your platforms wisely. Use infrastructure you trust not to blow your work away because its owners have an ideological ax to grind. +

This is a huge problem for securing the future of open research. If you're writing a grant, consider asking your open infrastructure provider how you can include them in your proposal. Love, Your friends at Knowledge Commons

Invest in Open Infrastructure@investinopen.bsky.social

Where does open infrastructure funding actually go? Only 29% reaches the infrastructure itself. The rest funds the research built on top of it. See the findings from our 2026 State of Open Infrastructure report: investinopen.org/state-of-ope... #OAWeek

I have had this creepy sense about that kid in the viral El Sayed video all day, but couldn't place it. Finally ran it down: I knew his GRANDFATHER. I was a student worker in the mid-1980s at the outdoor advertising company where he ran the marketing department for decades. It all adds up.

🚨 Outage alert! 🚨 KCWorks is getting a major upgrade early next week. On Monday, October 19th beginning at 6:30am ET, KCWorks will undergo a short period of downtime. For approximately an hour, repository uploads will be paused and you won't be able to view items in KCWorks.

One reason among many that the humanities should reclaim leadership among its areas of study. My own LEADING GENEROUSLY is one place to start.

All areas of Knowledge Commons and our network nodes are up and running again. ❤️ Late last week, Knowledge Commons experienced a cybersecurity incident. As soon as members of our team discovered evidence of intrusion, our team took the site offline and began emergency investigation and remediation.

I first wrote about the need to recognize peer reviews as acts of scholarship back in 2006. It's a dream deferred, but not a dream denied. We're going to make this happen.

Publish-Review-Curate (PRC) Alliance@prcalliance.bsky.social

In the Publish-Review-Curate model, peer review is given the recognition it deserves! The current publication system makes this important work invisible and doesn’t properly recognize it. Learn more about the Publish-Review-Curate model. 👇 publish-review-curate.org

Yes yes. The Knowledge Commons is a fantastic resource, community, and network. HASTAC will abide there! Huge thanks for everything, Kathleen

Knowledge Commons has been honored to host HASTAC in recent years. I hope that everyone associated with HASTAC — HASTAC scholars, HASTAC fans, and more — know that you have a home for continued community-building and resource-sharing with us. hcommons.org

@aoc.bsky.social: The best thing that we can do to rein in runaway costs at private institutions is by having tuition free public colleges and universities. “For anyone who wants to say that that’s pie in the sky and unrealistic… this is literally what baby boomers gave themselves.”

Friends, I need a Proton update. I migrated my email away after their CEO endorsed whatshisface, though I had multiple years of pre-paid service. I have still taken advantage of their VPN, though, and my account is nearing expiration. +

Is there any sign the situation has changed? Or is it time for me to suck it up and find a new VPN? Huge thanks to any of you who have been paying closer attention than I have.

What an *amazing coincidence* that the moves to undermine public higher education by shifting its costs from the government to students and families begins in earnest in the 1970s.

2. Any discussion about higher ed that misses that women and people of color were largely excluded until the *1970s* misses the fulcrum of these debates. 6/

Maybe it's time for higher education institutions to build an alternative cloud.
