Portlanders beware, the Zine Symposium is extra good this year. So many beautiful illustrated stories, daily art challenges, lists, recipes, and on. Vibes are also immaculate. Smith Ballroom, PSU, today and tomorrow!

You think I bought too many zines? You fool! I actually bought MORE than this. I took them out of the photo because it was starting to look less like a victorious haul and more like I have a problem.

One time I was at a wine tasting listening to the server describe this newest wine, and I cut in to ask “I’m sorry, I’ve heard of stone fruits before, but what are boulder fruits?” Her: “uh, well, they’re fruits that uh, have a richer, stronger taste than others…” Me: 🫥 oh Me: “BOLDER FRUITS”

FRIEND: we love an appellation wine ME: it's from Appalachia? FRIEND: no, it's from France ME: you said it was from Appalachia FRIEND: it's French appellation ME: *nodding* French-Appalachian FRIEND: no,

We have thousands of years of folklore telling you, in every cultural tradition, not to eat the goblin fruit. Goddamn it, people. How many more ways are we going to have to say it? STUDY SHOWS: GOBLIN FRUIT STILL BAD.

It’s fig season and I just ran down the mail carrier with a takeout tray full of fruit, in case you want to know how the “smaller” first harvest crop is going.

Now, most people are like “Sure! I’ll eat a fig!” to be polite, and that just doesn’t work for me. It’s a reverse tax, motherfuckers. There’s a minimum quota! Come a month from now when the “main” harvest ripens, I’m showing up to your house with a pallet jack.

The thing to know about fig trees is, you have fucked around all year enjoying your pretty tree, and now it is the season for Finding Out. It’s a goddamn Strega Nona cauldron in living form, and no one knows the secret words. An eternity of figs is about to be inflicted on everyone I know and love.

Okay yall I’ve just practiced my signature bake again for the Big Portland Bake Show tomorrow and I am PUMPED and READY, come see me at Pix/Can Bar tomorrow and Sunday! Free to the public, this is the schedule:

Proposing an art trade with my niece was a brilliant move to get me more practice (and more Niece Art). This is our second round of 👍 so I hope I can convince her to try another pose next time. Now to possibly RUIN EVERYTHING by adding an ink wash. It’s getting mailed either way!

The helper robots were a webcomic of mine in years long past. I’d like to put them back online some day, but for now they live on in small drawings and marginalia. For REAL artwork, follow *this* lovely person — and wish her a happy birthday!

Crispy-Ghee✨️@crispy-ghee.bsky.social

Got a birthday card from @keystricken.bsky.social and it included a doodle of my wrinkly faced boy in the corner (with a cute little helper robot assisting him with his jowls). I love it so much

That feeling of frustration when you can’t make your pretty ribbon form a pretty bow, so you just tie a tie. But then you discover that the bottle actually looks amazing wearing a tie.

If I drink more than two (2) lattes I can see time and taste sound, so I loved the Workshop Cafe in San Francisco (RIP) which charged a $2/hour fee for its tables. I could stay long after my caffeine quota was met. I’d love to see this replicated elsewhere.

There really does need to be a sort of, "pay the table rent of a coffee and pastry so you can sit around and read a book, hang out with friends, scribble in a notepad, etc." place.

@lackingceremony.bsky.social Avery, your “guy economy” thread in the good days of Twitter still echoes in my brain. Any chance you have it kicking around still?

ceej@ceej.online

my father-in-law is a “I know a guy” Guy. sadly all the old Guys are aging out of the Guy Economy. Guys are fundamentally incompatible with Hustle Culture because it’s not about “winning” a deal, it’s about collecting favors and goodwill in a mutually-beneficial cycle. protect your local Guy Economy

This is a masterpiece. Cat and Girl zines were ALREADY my favorite subscription, Dorothy did not have to flex this hard, but she DID.

I read the whole thing in one furious binge and now I want a dozen books in this world. Sharang’s writing is vividly immersive and narratively hilarious. Get it for yourself!

Sharang Biswas@sharangbiswas.bsky.social

Here's the book! It's about gay archeologists, drama between superheroes, chainmail robots, India as a world colonizer, open relationships, how we tell histories... And it has 100+ footnotes. Some are sexy Special thanks, as always, to @neonhemlock.bsky.social www.neonhemlock.com/books/iron-b...

A quick lunchtime entry (hah! I FINISHED IT) about Himalayan blackberries. The siege is eternal here in the Pacific Northwest. #makeaterriblecomic #makeaterriblecomicday #makeaterriblecomicday2026

You would think, after filling three yard bags with the spiky fuckers just yesterday, that I wouldn’t need any references, but you would be wrong.

Do not speak to me of "barriers to entry". Every act of creation is slicing out a thin sliver of light from the existential darkness of the human condition. You not being able to pick up a fucking pencil and risk failing does not even register.

Portland, *always* look at the text of the initiative before you sign! They will flip to the right page when you ask. I promise it takes less than 10 seconds to see if the canvasser is full of shit.

Andrew Engelson@andyengelson.bsky.social

Portland people: don't sign the "Safer Portland" initiative. Canvassers are lying to voters: this measure raids the clean energy fund to hire more cops.

I’ve been buried in work and haven’t had time to post artwork and projects like I’d prefer, so I’m afraid today you get some thoughts about AI instead. There are countless excellent reasons to hate genAI. My overpowering reason: it’s always offered in bad faith, and I despise bad faith.

These very smart people are ignoring the fundamental rule of Fuck That Guy: if That Guy builds the temple, then whether there’s treasure or not*, there’s no treasure worth having. * and this “whether” clause is giving them more dignity than they deserve, honestly

Now, the Fuck That Guy circuit breaker does sidestep genAI’s preferred terms of engagement, but that isn’t the same as a forfeit. It’s saying your effort, intellect, and good faith will be invested elsewhere. It can be put to better use. Refuse bad faith actors. When in doubt, Fuck That Guy. (fin)

There are so many great minds in tech who are ducking and weaving through the AI cognitohazards like Indiana Jones in a cursed temple, trying to find the powerful relic at the center. The relic will make the whole death trap worthwhile. Now imagine the temple was built by shitheads, not sorcerers.

And the temple is charging you money to enter. And also by number of steps taken. Running costs extra. Hey, pits of snakes are expensive! Oh yeah, there’s a relic in there for sure. Keep looking. If you don’t find it, it’s your fault for doing it wrong. Maybe you’re not looking hard enough.

We know this already; we have sunk it deep into the cultural hindbrain. We watch how someone treats their mother, or service workers, or small animals. I am here to tell you, it doesn’t matter if that “someone” has a Tinder profile or eighteen Senior VPs. That same protective instinct can apply.

Heartbreak #1, most common in relationships, is when someone thinks they don’t have the right to engage Fuck That Guy because it would be Rude. They haven’t personally been hurt, or, not hurt enough. Heartbreak #2 is when someone thinks they, alone, are smart enough to nibble around the poison.

When you engage Fuck That Guy, you wouldn’t buy a house from them, you wouldn’t take a job from them, you wouldn’t ask them to water your plants, you wouldn’t even accept an unopened drink with a tamper-proof seal. Why? Because Fuck That Guy. That’s all you need.

Honestly, it doesn’t even matter if the house, job, drink, etc. is fine THIS TIME. You’re blocking anything they could use to gain a foothold in your life. You’re making the call that what they have to offer is not worth the risk of being near someone who would gladly hurt you, or let you be hurt.

So, we have companies willing to steal all the world’s work from artists, writers, everyone, and sell it back to us; they induce psychosis in vulnerable people with barely a shrug; they call it “hallucination” when predictive text prints things that are not true, and blame you for uncareful prompts.

I could go on — we could all go on — but there is a circuit breaker built in our brains for our protection, and it is called, “fuck that guy”. When someone exceeds the threshold of what we in the industry call… shitassery… then you engage Fuck That Guy, and blank them from your life and community.

You don’t need to keep all the facts lined up like soldiers in your short term memory, ready to fight at a moment’s notice. All you have to know is these people are shitheads who take pride in their money, not in their work. They will hurt you if you let them, because they don’t care enough not to.

Everyone knows people like this — though hopefully not for long. You cut them from your life as a matter of hygiene. Bad faith is rarely compartmentalized. If they’re willing to lie, cheat, and steal without shame in one area, you can’t trust them in another. It makes no difference if they’re rich.

People far more articulate than me have talked all about what LLMs can and cannot do. You can (and should!) choose not to use a technology because it will not meet your needs. You can make that same choice because the sellers are grinning poisoners, and you won’t take ANYTHING from their hands.

This is true, though in this scenario, we stop that number from growing. We have to prevent them from doing what torturers have done for decades: take their festering sickness with them to police, prison, and “private security” jobs where their victims are even less visible.

Radley Balko@radleybalko.bsky.social

Even under a best case scenario — Dems take the WH in 2028, ICE and BP are abolished or rebuilt from scratch — we’re still going to have thousands of angry, unemployed, well-armed, MAGA loyalist former immigration cops who have been told for 3-4 years that they’re above the law.

Funny how Multnomah’s DA Nathan Vasquez can’t possibly prosecute ICE for tear gassing children, saying police haven’t brought him a case, but he CAN demand police create all new cases and investigations… when he’d like to throw drug users in jail, of course. www.wweek.com/news/2025/11...

I just got tear gassed along with thousands of union members, many of whom had their families with them. Federal agents at the ICE facility tear gassed children. We must abolish ICE, DHS, and we must have prosecutions. I expect to see enforcement of our city code prohibiting the use of tear gas.

It was “baby’s first tear gas” for so many of us, including some literal babies. This crowd looked exactly like the No Kings march, so as you can expect, we saw the gas approaching and thought it was just smoke from the flash bangs until it started burning.

Tim Dickinson@timdickinson.bsky.social

Today I saw ICE gas little white kids in the streets of Portland with chemical weapons. Imagine what they're doing to brown and black kids in the detention camps

The medics were smarter, of course, and they were already scrambling for their respirators and running into the cloud. Other people ran straight for the corner store and bought cases of bottled water to help the victims. The retreat was orderly (and VERY angry).

I guess I do think if you participated in the arrest of a five-year-old you are probably just fundamentally incompatible with society. That you are not a safe person for humanity to be around, generally

"what are we going to do with 20,000 ICE agents if we abolish ice" well to start with I think we should all literally spit on them in public for the rest of their lives
