I understand with a tanking economy in Europe the funding is increasingly scarce, but I hope the @erc.europa.eu acknowledges the strain this system places on scientists and pursues further changes to keep it viable for everyone involved. 8/9

With that said, I wish the 7709 scientists who alongside me participate in the #ERC_StG_2027 lottery this year the best of luck. 9/9

ERC’s are made of two parts: a project pitch called B1 and a methodology/feasibility part called B2. Both are comparable in size. However, selection of grants is a two-stage process, where first, only B1 is reviewed, slashing the pool by ~60% - with the new numbers closer to 80%. 6/9

This means thousands of B2s are written but never read. A true two-stage submission - submit B1 first, and invite only successful B1 applicants to submit B2 - could save scientists (and the tax payer) thousands of hours spent on unsuccessful ERCs. 7/9

As a result, @erc.europa.eu may lose its standing as a major funder of groundbreaking research, as scientists shy away from investing weeks or months of work in what feels like a lottery - fueling frustration and driving more people out of academia. 4/9

To avoid this, new funding streams should be created only when the funding volume of existing programs is at least maintained. That I think is particularly true for funding of early career scientists. But there are also changes possible to keep the burden on applicants more manageable. 5/9

How did we get here? The drop in the success rate is based on two changes: First, an extension of the eligibility window, and second, a slash in the overall funding volume for #ERC-StG (705M Euro in 2026 -> 594M Euro in 2027) presumably to fund the novel XXL #ERC+ grants. 2/9

Writing a competitive ERC grant is a major task that consumes a significant amount of time. With a 5% success rate (for years more than double that), the idea of a merit-based system starts to look like a lottery. 3/9

🧬 Ancient DNA → ancient proteins? We now have the computational toolkit to make this possible: CarpeDeam + AdDeam + AlphaFold + Foldseek. In our new preprint, we reconstruct an archaeal ATP synthase from ~2M-yo aeDNA from Greenland and predict its 3D structure. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

Thx Tom. Expectations are high 😅. With plenty of faunal aDNA generated the initial bottleneck is that often no one looks into the pathogen signature. But I hope more and more people appreciate the unseen bycatch they may have. Our lab is happy to team up on the pathogen hunt if expertise is wanted.

Tom Booth@boothicus.bsky.social

Good article on the potential and challenges of looking for pathogen DNA on ancient faunal remains, and really how without them we are only seeing a small part of the story of human disease through time. Possible it will change everything we think we know about infectious disease in the past.

For a detailed thread, please see here bsky.app/profile/keyf.... Alongside the sequencing data, we have now included extensive metadata for each sample in the supplementary materials to enable reanalysis by others. If any sample is of interest to you, please reach out.

Ancient pathogen DNA from animals can shed light on zoonotic processes in the deep past, but to this day reconstructed genomes are rare. In our new ms we explore the possibility of identifying pathogen DNA from the zooarchaeological record across 6000 years of Eurasian history doi.org/10.1101/2025...

This highly interdisciplinary effort was led by my amazing postdoc, AK Runge, and the zooarchaeologist and paleopathologist Kamilla Pawlowska (U Poznan), with contributions from many others who provided specimens and analyses.

Enjoyed reading this balanced piece on whether we are able to link the Neolithic 'decline' explicitly to pathogens (plague). Short answer: Probably not. It's complicated.

I was pleased to be invited to comment on this new paper on the genetic analysis of people buried in the Bury megalithic gallery grave in the Paris Basin as it saves me making a thread of my thoughts on here! rdcu.be/fbyll

Thx for the invitation and organization of this exciting event about current frontiers in microbiome research. It makes me look forward to the Xmas season already.

Our new preprint, led by Martin (@mfenk.bsky.social), is online. We address the microbiome’s role as a source and incubator of acute infections by combining prospective collection of native samples with population-wide, culture-based sequencing. Please check out Martin’s wonderful thread. ⬇️🧵🎉

Precisely calling mutations across hundreds of bacterial isolates has been hard, requiring manual filtering and expertise. Until now, using AccuSNV. Herui Liao trained an ML model based on our previous meticulously called SNVs. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
