This newer JSA book is just a rehash of what Johns did in the JSA the first time. All the same familiar tropes. But there’s no spark here, and by the end it’s clear he’s just wrapping things up, either by choice or editorial decision. Probably a bit of both.

Geoff Johns wants so badly to be the modern Alan Moore, but really he’s the modern Roy Thomas. Obsessed with the comics of his childhood and poking around in them, and how you feel about their work depends a lot on how along for that ride you are.

But like Thomas Johns ultimately doesn’t have anything *new* to add. Their comics are full of new characters but not new ideas, just rehashes of the things that have come before them. And that’s fine- comics needs people to build on what came before- but it can also be very empty.

Well that was pretty lame. Johns was clearly just going through the motions on a series that was probably DOA because of the editorial change above him. Like Doomsday Clock it feels like a comic no one wanted but one person, and then that one person didn’t even want it very much.

We used to have a guy in our old neighborhood that would decorate his house elaborately, and then give all the kids he thought looked too old a hard time. Finally one year he made a big show about blocking his house off with caution tape to keep people away lest these TEENAGERS get a piece of candy.
