The fact that I don’t believe in astrology or ghosts always seems to surprise my students. Conversely, the fact that so many of the them do believe in these things always shocks me

I saw You Can See Everything last night. I enjoyed the first half but couldn’t quite see what all of the fuss was about. But the second half? Woah. Now I get it.

I’ve read a lot of disturbing things in the course of my research, but reading through the hundreds of fawning letters that people wrote in support of Gajdusek when he was arrested for child sex abuse is really hard. How could someone be an inspiration to so many people and also so monstrous?!

I try really hard not to make my dietary preferences any one else’s problem, but I went to dept dinner & the waiter dismissively said “we don’t really have vegan options.” I ate potatoes & squash for dinner (which were vegetarian and not vegan). Its 2026. Ugghhhh

It’s starting to get spooky over here in Field Hall. The whole building is participating in a Halloween celebration on Wed Oct. 28th from 3-4:30. Come by for fun decorations, snacks, and camaraderie. Everyone is welcome!

Any conferences within a few hundred miles of Latvia next summer? My partner will be performing at an arts festival in Riga and I want to figure out a way to go along and not have to pay out of pocket.

Mortifying moment of the day: I had a zoom advising meeting so i opened up my zoom room to wait for the student to arrive. Meanwhile, I forgot that I had done that and started dancing around my office. I looked over at my computer and the student was there.

My newest nephew George has arrived (#14)! But also my Uncle Bob died. I hadn’t seen him in decades b/c my family is complicated with a lot of feuds to keep track of. I already mourned that part of my family a long time ago. But I still feel a loss for the relationships that we could have built.

Trying to pick books for my spring grad seminar on Sex, Gender, and Colonialism. I’m having a hard time balancing “classics” with newer works. Here is the pile that I have made so far. Suggestions welcome!

How should I refer to research by a woman that was conducted when she were married and had her husband's surname, but they have since divorced and she has used a different surname for decades since?* *I'm talking about Shirley Lindenbaum/Glasse and Robert Glasse

We can complain about students not showing up for stuff all day, but faculty are just as bad. Case in point: only 2 out of 5 faculty bothered to show up for our program meeting today.

I know that there are more important things to be annoyed about but why does every ignorant keyboard warrior assert that gender studies is a subset of sociology? I’ve taken one sociology course at a community college as a high school senior.
