Given what a HUGE number of emails during the Consumerist era (2013-17), to both me directly and also the tip line, were people asking for help with their Facebook or Instagram accounts... I feel like this just highlights how neat it would be for customer service to exist, with online platforms.
In the last few weeks i've been bombarded with emails from people who have minor tech support problems. ChatGPT is telling them to email me, writing their emails, and compiling "evidence packets" after convincing them they have stumbled on a major story: www.404media.co/chatgpt-keep...
It's funny to see the pre-VHS method of using an old film library — periodic theatrical re-releases — coming back in style. (That's how Disney's 'Fantasia' was the first movie I saw in theaters lol, I was definitely not born for the first run) www.theverge.com/entertainmen...
This is a thing I think about a lot, that your data (privacy, texts, DNA, voiceprint, image, all of it) are only as safe as your most credulous, least thoughtful contact makes them. Seems suboptimal!
With the advent of “AI personal assistants” like Meta’s Muse, you’re being cheerfully asked not just to give up your own data, but also the information of your friends, family, and virtually anyone else you’ve ever come in contact with. Read more from @janus.bsky.social: buff.ly/aQhWEgZ
Honestly? I'm into it. Kind of reminds me of 'A Knight's Tale' in that sometimes the mood and rhythm of a thing are way more important than period details. www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDJ-...
"the new version... relocates the power button from the bottom of the e-reader to the top right edge ... prevent users from accidentally putting it to sleep when resting the e-reader on something while reading." Look, JUST BECAUSE I do this at least 3x every single day is no reason to call me out
The new basic Kindle will be available in light blue, green, and mauve with an updated design. www.theverge.com/tech/1001905...
And this is why I want to keep my 2014 car until roughly the end of time, if possible. www.theverge.com/transportati...
I do in fact send emails like this all the time haha. ( @nickstatt.bsky.social and I kind of had a good cop / bad cop routine going for a while with unreasonable requests lol but after a year of that, the requests mostly got more reasonable ) www.tiktok.com/@decoderpod/...
I was part of a different blog commenting community that formed ca. 2008 and 18 years later, about 100 of us are still all in touch every day, we've been to each other's weddings, we've babysat each other's kids; it's a *community* and it was cool when blogs could spawn that.
Ever since I started at Slate I have been fascinated by our commenting community, which seems to hate just about everything I’ve ever published on the site. For the 30th anniversary of the magazine, I decided to ask them why. (Quick thread.)
ICYMI over the weekend, we ran an extra bonus episode after my own antitrust-nerd heart. My favorite line: "If you don’t build a safe and secure product, then perhaps there should be robot jail for your agents and it should be taken off the market.”
