Formal verification is the new Borgian map, only instead of being 1:1, “Proofs can be many times larger than the original code … it took two person-years to implement the seL4 operating system kernel, but 20 person-years to formally verify it.” www.anthropic.com/research/for...

anthropic.comLLMs are making formal software verification feasible at a much larger scaleClaude formally proved security properties in the compiled code of 123 open-source libraries. Along the way, it found bugs that had eluded detection for years.

... these protocols for connecting AI agents as though they were trust services, when neither was designed to vouch for what it connects, or is connecting to. This is a huge deal, especially now that agents continue to make more & more decisions around software development. 2/2

I have begun a new creative project & have been reading lots of academic articles to educate myself on the subject, which has had the unintended consequence of reminding me how much I enjoy the deep expertise of peer reviewed writing. People mock the limited audience, but there's real beauty in it.

I want a Lovecraft edition where the narrator stops telling me how to feel about everything: "They were present in loathsome profusion, and I saw to my horror that they overlapped" becomes "They were present in profusion, and I saw that they overlapped"

... but also because this story continues a pattern of large-scale architectural changes that used to be dismissed as too risky or too expensive, that are getting done now that agents have changed the cost of writing and maintaining new code.

OMG, @techcrunch.com 🔥🔥🔥 “It isn’t clear why the company’s board made this decision now. One person speculated that the timing may have something to do with Mullenweg’s annual trip to the Burning Man festival, after which he tends to return ‘with ideas.’” techcrunch.com/2026/09/09/a...

File under #godforsakensouth, but on a hike yesterday some insect (wasp?) stung my ankle and whatever venom it injected made my immune system go haywire. Large area of swelling around the bite, hot to the touch, heart racing, hurt like hell & it won't go away! Added itching to the mix at 3 AM.

For Part 2 of my @redmonk.com series on why modern software registries are a trust service, I look at hardened container images, where the trust-service model is furthest along. I then trace the same model in extension registries, where the Eclipse Foundation now sells an SLA on Open VSX. 2/3
