one of my favorite moments in all of Literature is a scene in Ellen Kushner’s excellent Swordspoint in which the antagonist decides to just take a night off from the plot and stay inside reading by the fire

The 2026 Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story or Comic goes to A Wizard of Earthsea: A Graphic Novel, written by Ursula K. Le Guin, adapted and art by Fred Fordham (Clarion Books; Walker UK).

I saw the Lyres in a club in Seattle in about 1987, back in my misspent youth. They had a big fight onstage and Conolly played the rest of the set with a bloody nose. It was a small window into something very unhappy behind the music.

A long-ago email exchange with @ursulakleguin.com: >> But then sometimes I wonder very much if I have a Secret Life. > Someone who tests off the scale for introversion has no secret life? The triple-locked box in the secret compartment could be empty! I miss her.

This is a very Le Guinian thought.

“There are occasions when you can hear the mysterious language of the Earth, in water, or coming through the trees, emanating from the mosses, seeping through the under currents of the soil, but you have to be willing to wait and receive.” - John Hay (A Beginner's Faith in Things Unseen)

I wish I could be there!

If you're in Seattle, don't miss this event at Elliott Bay Book Company on Thursday (7/16): Theo Downes-Le Guin will be in conversation with author and editor Nisi Shawl about The Curve of the World, Vonda N. McIntyre's final novel, which was recently published by Aqueduct Press.

A gem from the archive: a poster for Ursula's first public talk, at Portland State University in 1971. Were you there? If you attended any of Ursula's earliest events, we'd love to hear about the experience! Thank you to @julie-phillips.com for the image!

Yes. Welcome to my world.

Since I've mentioned too many old male writers recently, I'll be posting pics of others (careful here, Guido). Most but not all working in Fantastica. See if you can identify them...

3/ Now, we eradicated it in 1966, but how did we do that? Starting in the late 1950s, scientists used the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT): mass-producing sterile males and releasing them to outcompete wild males, collapsing the fly population. It works because female flies mate only once.

I saw a group of condors a few years ago, riding a mountain wave just for the joy of it. It was magnificent, like seeing an eclipse, a phenomenon beyond human scale. All I could think was, "I have seen the dragons on the wings of morning."

There are no words to describe the joy this brings. A Condor back in Oregon skies. Just a lot of gratitude for all the work from the Yurok Tribe, National Park Service, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's on the Northern California Condor Restoration Program. www.oregonlive.com/environment/...
