Eh. I've got a lot of that gen-x pessimism that I'm trying to replace with optimism as I can. I like animals, books, plants, and kindness. He/Him. I suspect this account will largely be an old-man-yells-at-cloud space

Tired of doing new pilot projects that either don't go anywhere or are succesful until some bit of crucial infrustructure breaks and there is no support to fix it. Or, maybe just tired.

Looking back at a 30-ish item ToDo list that I haven't looked at in 6 months. There are like 2 done things, 3 won't do things, and the rest are still things that need doing. Constantly busy, but rarely making progress it feels.

Frustrating thing about working IT: it doesn't matter what agenda you had for the day, you might just end up spending 4 hour looking for a syntax error.

Second day in a row that I've seen job postings for remote postions I am very qualified for paying 30-50% more than I currently make. It is a terrible time to consider leaving though.

Microsoft stuff makes me so angry sometimes. I just want to make a group calender visible to people outside the group... There is no clear path to do that, but there are dozens of half-baked options that almost work, but you can't figure that out without spending an hour in Power Automate failing.

The one thing I really need to get done today is a really simple form... Or this other very simple form... But not both. And I know that if I do the wrong one it will delay everything by 2-3 weeks. But no one will tell me which one is the right one.

How have I wound up with all these inspiring videos of sick, injured, or severely obese dogs on my feed? Like, I'm glad they are getting help, but it makes me sad... And also with the shear number of them I worry it might be exploitative.

I've been an academic librarian for over 20 years now, and I still don't understand why the hell we are faculty. Being faculty piles all sorts of extra busy work on our plates... But what do we GET for it? It certainly isn't "respect from other faculty".

It gives us access to "permanent status"... But read your policies. Permanent status is not permanent. The university can revoke it at any time for pretty much any reason.

On the topic of tenure for librarians... Or something semi-equivalent... Why do we do this? It seems like so much added to our plate with no real returned value to ourselves or our profession. Mandatory termination after 6 years if you don't publish enough? Jeez.

/2 whenever I read the policies around this it seems so onerous and silly that I can't believe we basically foisted it upon ourselves.

I loved the original Frank Herbert Dune novels, and every now and then I consider reading the books written by other people... Then I read a brief synopsis and some comments about how shallow and silly they are and don't read them.

Since Rushmore is a pretty shitty thing already, it would be pretty delightful if they tried to put him on and completely fucked up the whole thing. Of course they'd blame it on antifa.

#crochet beanie-type thing. Tunisian in the round. I havent decided whether to do a ribbed border yet... The net was what I was going for, but I almost like the inside better.

Man, I love public transportation. Whenever I visit a place that has it, it makes me sad that I don't.

Xeno's paradox of leaving the house: we can't go until everyone has used the bathroom, but by the time everyone has gone to the bathroom the first person has to go again.

They've decided at my work to save money by not cooling the building at night and on weekends... 1) I'm not sure that works, and 2) it is sucks sitting here sweating when I could be working from home in comfort.

At my kid's college orientation... Some of these parents are NOT getting that their kids are adults now. The FERPA rules are driving them crazy.

One of those days when things just feel pretty futile. Doing data cleanup work that no one will ever notice or care about.

I've got to start paying attention to the cost of the yarn when I start bigger crochet projects. I'm always like: "Ooh, that looks nice" and don't notice that it is 3 times the price as the one next to it that is really, really similar.

I've read about 60 of the Guardian's list if top 100 novels. Not a bad lust as lists go, but I struggle with Middlemarch in the top slot.

Anyone have any #crochet app suggestions? I'm specifically looking for something to generate (or draw myself) crochet diagrams. I find reading crochet directions sometimes tedious! The diagrams with symbols are so much easier for me to read.

Opted to enclose the end in a sort of cap... Not super happy with how this came out. I might add some tassles?

#crochet work in progress. White and blues scarf (shawl?) With tunisian simple stitch and purl stitches alternating. Planning to gradually darken the overlay white hexes until they are the same color as the blue underneath.

Several #crochet works in progress. The scarf is a birthday present that is NOT going to be ready in time.

I actually DID finish the scarf on time for the birthday. The shawl on the otherhand... I realized that I screwed up the last purple row, and I don't think I want to bother fixing it (or continuing it).

Decided to try to #crochet a scarf per month... Here's January's done in April, so I don't think I'll meet my goal!

Rewatching the TV series Fringe... I know they were trying to build an audience to avoid cancellation, but jeez do they stop and explain the whole concept of the show ALL the time.

Shared my screen in a meeting yesterday and someone laughed about the number of tabs I had open... It was only one of three windows with just as many tabs.

I started crocheting again to avoid doomscrolling too much... But I crocheted so much that I apparently fucked up my elbow.

Was going for a variation on the Melt the ICE hat... I think maybe I varied too far. Not sure the tassel works, but it is kinda cute without it. #crochet

Can they design a smoke detector battery that doesn't start to announce its imminent failure in the middle of the night?

Almost every day I get angry about how they took scrollbars away from us. When present at all they are tiny and nearly invisible.

Was out there clearing ice with a hammer again since it was the most effective implement I had. Old dude clearing ice - for the schoolbus stop I think - was like "try this": and handed me a massive metal spike. Cleared what I had been working on for hours in like 10 minutes.

Finished(?) project: fingerless gloves. I crocheted one mitten top, but I think I like them more judt fingerless. My kid said with the mitten part it looked like an alligator. #crochet

I've heard of the second sock problem, but what about the first mitten problem? Number 2 came out about perfect, but the first one was all baggy and weird. #crochet

Note for people crocheting the hexegon cardigan: Make it longer than you think it needs to be. I've extended mine twice and I still think it should be longer. Consider tapering as you go down. I'm a roundish person, but it still got very baggy at the bottom. #crochet
