Hoping the bad online vibes around the Switch 2 don't rock the boat too much. I'm still thankful we have a Nintendo that is still in the hardware game after dancing so close to the edge with the Wii U and gambling everything on the original Switch.

Yes it's pricey, but that's a lot of good kit miraculously packaged into a small space that happens to do a lot of tricks (eg mouse mode!?) I hope Nintendo wins big time. Their platform and approach to gaming is still the most exciting of the lot.

There are β€œEsperanto” ideas, proposals which sound great, but are complex and impractical, and so they never take off. There also are β€œtweet” ideas, trivial things which don’t seem to do much at all, but are simple and appealing to everyone, and so they spread everywhere.

Update: went a bit crazy here, got an M4 iPad Pro and a MIDI controller. I'm addicted to this stuff. My fallback excuse was "it'll make a nice work computer if I don't get along with music creation" but the touch interface for tweaking + physical dials and keys is a lovely balance.

Trying to enter the music creation world from very humble beginnings - I have a Pocket Operator KO 33 (which I love dearly), but I'm in the market for making music and I want to build a nice setup without breaking the bank (just in case I'm really, really bad at it). Any recommendations?

I'm thinking a portable synth would be a nice next step. Korg's Volca FM2 looks like fun and it might be nice to pair with a drum machine (either another Korg Volca or a PO Tonic)? I have one eye on an iPad but I love the feel of actual hardware buttons for this... that matters for some reason.

Emerging from this - really strange but great thing happened once the depersonalisation subsided, I felt more detached from my current idea of self (running a business, and the stresses of) and seemed to reassemble a sense of "true" self akin to my late teens. Felt like I met an old friend again.

Whatever this cold/flu/virus thing is that is knocking about, it's grim. I know I'm a bit of a precious flower but so far it has been: 2x nights of fever dreams 1.5x days of a real depersonalised feeling Not nice.

Maybe it's just the time of the season that naturally reaches back, but this feels quite unmistakable. The more I try to cling to it the more it seems to become unstable - I'll just try enjoying it while it lasts.

Endtroducing... by DJ Shadow was today's daily album. It's one of those ones I just don't understand the degree of outsized acclaim that it gets. I know it's clever sampling, but for me, Paul's Boutique (in a similarish vein) is much more impressive.

I'm on a strange binge of collecting up Mac-assed apps and I'm stuck trying to find a satisfying code editor. I'm a Nova user but I feel like it's a bit over-the-top and it gets away from the simplicity, and stubbornness-as-a-feature that seems typical of Mac-assed apps. Any recommendations?

Just to sound extra fussy about this stuff, I've been through a bunch of different editors like VS Code which are very much "in the Mac but not *of* the Mac" for lack of a better way of describing what I'm looking for.

You are what you read. Notice how inputs affect your baseline mood. β€” News cycles of elections, wars, tragedy will change you from within by imposing on or asking an opinion of you. β€” Notice this from when you wake in the morning. Choose birdsong and sunrise as an input before a single screen...

...and see if you can sense a change in world affairs from the world around you. You can't. Rest here for a while. β€” If or when you decide to encounter a screen, pay close attention to your baseline mood as the rush of information colours you from within...

I'm aware this sounds a bit "well, duh" - but most of the best parts of my nostalgia stretch back about 20 years. This realisation (quoted) is that you can have THAT for NOW.

You can't have the sweet parts of nostalgia (love, gratitude, warm feelings etc) without reflecting on something... Nostalgia requires the crystallising of something to be nostalgic. So in a sense, you can have nostalgia (full of love, gratitude) for TODAY with _deliberate reflection_ on your day.

I had no master plan to quit my job. Even now, several years after doing so, when people ask about my journey, I’m more confused than you might expect. It’s tempting to tell a simple story. People want to hear about bold acts of courage, not years of feeling lost. https://pmillerd.com/pebble/

I highly recommend both Bike and Taskpaper - the sense of deliberateness in the design decisions in both apps is just 🀌 There is something about how the native feeling of Mac-assed apps just doesn't compare to anything else. In gaming, it's called "game feel". Both Jesse's apps have it.

This caught my attention when watching an MTV throwback to Madonna and William Orbit recording Ray of Light (I'm an Orbit-obsessive). It looks like they storyboard their tracks 🀯 I need to figure out what that "β€” FRENZY β€”" section is all about.

Exactly this. The real life equivalent is the people you choose to surround yourself with and their influence on your outlook. If you were to hang around with IRL people who argue with others all the time and are generally negative, you'd soon have people saying you're hanging with a bad crowd.

The best part about social media is meeting cool, creative people. Social gets a bad rap because there are a lot of nasty folks out there. But when you go in with the right mind and connect with good people, you can have a remarkable experience. So far, @bsky.app is delivering that in spades.

Very chess-like so far in this game (Arsenal vs United). Amorim has us set up nicely defensively against an Arsenal side who are very dangerous in attack. Looks like we'll get them to half time without a shot on goal. We're lacking a lot of creativity though. I'm yet to see Mount fit in this side.

There is something unexplainably homely about Verdana. It's like seeing an old friend again. I'm seriously considering reverting to the original web safe font.

Added some additional graphics to my horizontal blog. It's the most cumbersome, restrictive format, along with my recent change-up to comic book imagery restricts things further... yet I can't bring myself to scrap it for something that would make publishing a lot easier.

Hoping to settle the family Christmas movie schedule this week. My personal preference is to at least hit these movies in this order: Early Dec: - The Grinch (Jim Carrey version) Mid Dec: - Die Hard Late Dec: - Batman Returns Xmas Eve, Eve: - Home Alone 2 Xmas Eve: - Home Alone - Polar Express

My favourite toys of the year. The Pocket Operator was a massive influence over my digital minimalism drive for the first half of the year (I'm now off the wagon but want to get back on for the holiday season). Both tools are fun in their own way.
