I love talking about the video game business. Disclaimer: I’m not actually in the video game business.

Hello! Here are my favorite interests: - Gaming industry/business - Turn-based gameplay - Roguelikes - Looter games - Indie games - Animation - New technology (that doesn’t put people out of jobs)

An absolutely spectacular feature. Thank you, DF!

Today on DF, a massive new video on STAR WARS: Galactic Racer as @dark1x.bsky.social talks to Fuse Games on the origins of the studio, the collaboration with Lucasfilm and interviews with all major departments on the making of the game: youtu.be/EIPgivtETng #sponsored

Been playing Outer Wilds mostly on my new pair of XREAL glasses and it’s an amazing experience. Giant OLED screen in deep space? I can’t possibly be more immersed if I tried.

This one was a thinker. It felt like listening to a college lecture and just absorbing the words but not understanding them. Then after reading the accompanying articles I would find myself saying “oh THAT’s what he meant when said XYZ”

“People who are interested in games have too much of their identities bound up with their interest in games compared to almost anything else that I’ve encountered.” Ian Bogost talks about his approach to critiquing games AND how he has become more mindful of life's small pleasures.

Finally got some time to sit down and review the games I’ve been playing the last month. So here’s a Backloggd review thread with my quick thoughts!

And here’s what I’m currently playing! AC is just eye candy for audiobook reading, Screamer has me locked in on the story, Sektori transports me to another dimension, and I just started Go-Go Town! this morning. Any other recommendations??

Honorable mentions that I won’t link because they aren’t really reviews.. Alabaster Dawn so far has been excellent and I can’t wait to follow its early access journey! Mina the Hollower.. I really tried. I’m just not the audience for hard games..

007 First Light is definitely my current GOTY. More importantly, 007 has made me realize how much I love linear games. I prefer when storytellers determine the pacing, because they know what they’re doing. I ruin the pacing when I’m left alone in an open world. bckl.gg/vlvz

bckl.ggFiteKnight's review of 007 First Light | BackloggdWhat a game. The performances and story really elevate this game to another level, and I don’t even have any history with 007. I’ve never watched or played any other 007 media, but I absolutely unders...

The King is Watching is great and I recommend it. It reminds me almost of a small scale Civilization game with how you have to think 20 steps ahead. That being said, it felt like the rounds were a bit too long for my liking, and the progression wasn’t enticing enough for me to continue. bckl.gg/vlvH

bckl.ggFiteKnight's review of The King is Watching | BackloggdI had a great time with this game and would definitely recommend it, but after looking at all the different upgrades I have yet to unlock, there isn’t really anything that excites me. I also fell into...

I’ve got a lot of thoughts on Marathon.. I absolutely love it. Unfortunately, the high stress of an extraction shooter isn’t how I want to spend my night after a long day of work and evening of toddler parenting. Especially when I can’t pause it. I’ll be back for the PvE!! bckl.gg/vlvh

bckl.ggFiteKnight's review of Marathon | BackloggdWhere to begin. As a former D2 player that quit after Final Shape, I have a lot of external bias toward this game that is no fault of the game itself. After playing the free week, I had fallen in love...

Or, maybe, we let Tom Hanks do one last performance in a movie that is about Woody breaking away from the main crew so that he has a nice send-off and we can focus on the other toys in sequels instead of bringing Hanks back! … oh wait

Disney could use technology to "cobble together" voice lines for Woody in future Toy Story movies, Tom Hanks has suggested. https://bit.ly/4w0DaKS

Was on the fence about Elliot after playing the demo because the combat seemed so basic. Then @andycortez.cool said to try the Alabaster Dawn demo instead and I bought it after only swinging the sword 3 times. Gimme that chop-chop-spin all day.

I haven’t laughed this hard in a LONG time. I spent the last 15 minutes of this episode in tears

Feb-23: Lightfall came out to poor reception and no new PvP content. The Destiny 2 Dev Team (D2DT) said “we know yall want more PvP content.” May-23: Bungie announced Marathon, a heavy PvP game. Aug-23: D2DT told us that they did not have enough devs to make new PvP content. It stung a bit.

Tbh- nothing we hadn’t heard before from D2DT, but combined with multiple rounds of layoffs and the sheer existence of Marathon’s development, it was clear that Bungie was actively hindering D2DT. D2DT told us they needed more people and Bungie just kept taking people away.

All that to say, I don’t “hate” Marathon as described in the article. To me, Marathon is really just a lightning-rod term to call out Bungie™️’s total mismanagement of Destiny 2.

The transparency from D2DT combined with decisions from Bungie that obviously did not help D2DT is where it hurts. The devs who worked on class abilties did interviews where they would say “we would love to do more, but we don’t have enough time or people.” New guns just became re-skins of old guns.

I wrote a very rambly review about Pacific Drive from @ironwood.bsky.social and how it provided me with a gaming experience unlike any other which cemented itself as one of my all time favorites! … even though I didn’t even finish the main story bckl.gg/tIa2

bckl.ggFiteKnight's review of Pacific Drive | BackloggdPacific Drive enraptured me in a way that a game never has before. I was obsessed, and the developer even foreshadowed it. And yet, I didn't actually even finish the main story itself. I haven't read ...

Thankfully there aren’t any official requirements on who can review games, or if a game is allowed to be in your personal top 10 even if you didn’t finish it. Shoutout to @timgettys.bsky.social and his semi-rant on Monday when he said “if you like a game, just talk about it.”

Just bought a 3rd party game on Xbox for the first time in a LONG time. I was surprised to see that Crimson Desert supports Xbox Play Anywhere which means I bought the game once and I can play on my PC, Xbox SX, and ROG Ally X with cloud saves. I believe this feature is the winning formula for Xbox.

The most disappointing thing about the Xbox ecosystem is how underutilized it is. A lot of games exist on both Xbox SX and Xbox PC but do not support XPA. Idk if this is because devs want to double dip or if it’s more work to support, but either way, Xbox needs to get more support for XPA.

I recently picked up Pacific Drive and I have become absolutely obsessed with it. Which is so weird because there are so many qualities about it that I typically don’t like, but there’s something about them all together that makes it captivating.

I know this has been highly requested, but I NEVER thought Nintendo would actually do this. The help page has so many asterisks about how this mode could result in unintentional errors. This is coming from the same company that disabled Bluetooth audio on the Switch 1 because of controller issues.

Started Pokopia yesterday and yeah it’s definitely going to be my new obsession. So far, I’m impressed with the small QOL features that are present at launch that would normally get added in an update. Like claim all quest rewards at once or individual notifications.

Over a year later but Mat’s rec never left my mind. I downloaded Cat Quest 3 last night on my iPhone because it’s a free demo with the full game as an IAP. Loved it. And it was only $5 to unlock the whole game??? It runs flawlessly and has controller support!!

Mat Piscatella@matpiscatella.bsky.social

Nah. It's 3 > 1 > 2 for me. There is like this meta Cat Quest universe thing going on, but you'll be fine.

I’m surprised Nintendo didn’t just keep it and lock it behind the Nintendo Switch Online membership.
