I miss the pre-AI days, during which if I posted a nice bit of (human-authored) writing, readers' meta-reactions might be "hey, that guy is a pretty decent writer!" ...instead of "hey, I wonder what AI model and prompt that guy used."

I've taken to prefixing my handwritten GitHub pull request descriptions with the heading "Description by Jon the Human ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ’ป" to help differentiate them from the now-ubiquitous AI-generated PR summaries.

Why doesn't Amazon have the search field on the amazon.com homepage get the input focus automatically on page load?? It's got to be an intentional design choice. I suppose Amazon wants to get users to look around at the products on the homepage as they're looking for the search field?

In ~35+ years of occasionally running "chkdsk /f" to take a stab at fixing PC hard drive problems: I had it ACTUALLY WORK for the first time ever, and restore a Windows 11 computer from unbootable to a usable running state.

From his game dev blog, I'm bringing this to my team at my corporate SaaS job: > If the prototype ends up proving your idea doesnโ€™t work, or is beyond your means, youโ€™re gonna want as much time as possible to do something about that.

$27.20 to Michigan in the #CharitibundiBowl. Beating Ohio State is always fantastic -- and Michigan wouldn't have been IN this game without an OSU win, something sadly no longer true in the current expanded playoffs -- but the 27-20 Rose Bowl win over Alabama was HISTORIC.

As someone who both writes in Markdown, and is a gamer: The failure of various Markdown flavors to agree on whether bold/italic text should be bounded by _, or *, or **, is annoying. But less annoying than the failure of Microsoft and Nintendo to agree on the order the A/B and X/Y buttons go in.

I highly recommend grabbing a copy of Laysara! It's my favorite city builder ever -- while not being a traditional city builder! Laysara's just-released Campaign Mode is a really great set of "rails," providing just enough guidance to keep you moving forward while still affording plenty of freedom.

Last shout to grab Laysara: Summit Kingdom for 50% off on Steam!!! ๐Ÿšจ Itโ€™s a city-building puzzle game except itโ€™s set on various mountains! If you are a fan of things like ANNO and classic Sierra games, then you may like it ๐Ÿ˜

I've been burned enough times by copying text with Cmd+C (or Ctrl+C), then pasting it -- only to find that that text somehow didn't actually make it onto the clipboard -- that I've developed a compulsion of hitting Cmd+C several times in a row. Even though there's no reason that should help.

Just noticed that the #hades2 game over music ditty is different if you're defeated by Scylla & the Sirens. Normally, the music is baroque-style, with a ticking clock sound in the background. ("Time Cannot Be Stopped") Vs Scylla, you instead get a rock music version of the same tune. Amazing.

To software developers implementing undo/redo in text fields: Please always add an undo breakpoint immediately after the user pastes text! It's annoying to paste text; hit Cmd+Z to undo; and have text I had entered *prior to the paste* also be removed. Thanks in advance, I appreciate y'all! ๐Ÿ˜…

2FA code entry form submit behaviors, ranked from best to worst! 1. (Tie) The form automatically submits once the user has entered six digits in the field. 1. (Tie) The form doesn't auto-submit. The user can hit Return/Enter to submit. 3. Neither of the above work. (1/2)

3. (Continued) The form doesn't auto-submit. Pressing Return/Enter (while the input field has the focus) does nothing. The user instead must reach over to the mouse, move the cursor over the Submit button, and click. (Or tab down to the Submit button, and _then_ hit Enter.) #ux (2/2)

There was an early era of the WWW in which most traffic was unsecured HTTP -- not secured HTTPS -- as bad actors hadn't quite worked out how to weaponize the ability to read, and alter-during-transit, that clear text content. My guess is that we're in a similar early era with generative AI tools.

If your team has a 98% chance to win, then that means they have a 2% chance to lose. And, on occasion, that 01 comes up on the percentile dice. XCOM players know this.

I will go on record as feeling a little bit annoyed when I see some text posted online or at work, which at first glance appears to be a nice piece of prose -- but which at second glance was obviously pretty heavily edited by AI.
