My review of YOU CAN SEE EVERYTHING is up now at Fade to Lack. Took me a while to wrangle the magnitude of this film into a coherent reaction, and even as I went deep and got personal, I still only feel like I scratched the surface. www.jonathanlack.com/p/review-you...

In a time of rising antisemitism, we could use an organization dedicated to opposing it. Instead we have the ADL, which shrugs at Sieg Heils and anti-Jewish slurs at the top levels of govt to fixate on this. I grew up a few miles from Brighton Beach, and we called the area "Russian," not "Jewish."

Here's a direct link to House Dem's Judiciary Cmte report. Per a new report from House Democrats, Trump's DOJ is withholding evidence of his ties to Epstein and slow-walking the complete release of the Epstein files. It's time to end the cover-up and expose the truth. Remember this when you cast your ballot. www.ms.now/news/house-j...

I emailed Patrick Healy, assistant managing editor for standards and trust at NYT, to ask why their story about a House report with new details of rape allegations against the President of the United States included neither those details, nor a single use of the word "rape." archive.is/1s9AM

Not a big story, it's just the Attorney General working with an imprisoned pedophile to help cover up the pedophile President's crimes conducted with his best friend for 15 years, a pedophile who the President sent, as a birthday card, a drawing of a naked adolescent girl.

Amanda Marcotte@amandamarcotte.bsky.social

This report is genuinely overwhelming, in terms of the evidence both against Trump and of a ham-fisted cover-up. Including one instance in which Ghislaine Maxwell was actually about to mention one of Trump's young accusers and Todd Blanche told her to stop talking. The media response is "yawn."

PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE Episode 24 of NEON GENESIS EVANGELION I am confident I am right about this and may have even started a little video project about it once but I will not be taking further questions at this time.

Name 2 films w the Same Plot.

Look, Tyler Schulz very likely saved lives by whistleblowing on Theranos. Nothing but respect for him as a person for that. But this is comically wrong and misinformed, and it’s yet another example of everyone thinking they get to be an expert in film just because they’ve seen a movie.

“'You Can See Everything' is a hilarious, thrilling, fascinating, beautiful piece of art. What it certainly is not is a documentary, and it’s dangerous to pretend that it is,” writes Theranos whistleblower Tyler Shultz. https://bit.ly/4Bk2nDJ

What makes something a documentary is literally one of the single most contested questions over a full century of filmmaking and film studies. Whole classes are taught on this subject. People get PhDs studying this. And YOU CAN SEE EVERYTHING is critically engaged with that whole rich history.

You don’t see me going into a bio-medical research lab and telling them what is and isn’t science. The difference is that I understand what those people are doing is complicated and takes knowledge and experience, and they think that what I do takes none whatsoever. And, you know, fuck you.

Eric Bauza is a colossal loss. Just on the level of talent, I think the assumption is we’d never have another Mel Blanc, capable of doing all those voices - and yet, there he was, doing them beautifully. And on a personal level - seems like he was an amazing person. Gone so so much too soon.

I don’t expect a Theranos whistleblower to be an expert in nonfiction cinema any more than I am in medical testing, but John Grierson defined documentary a century ago as “the creative treatment of actuality” and that’s still a good place to start

I choose to see the upside of this as a great moment for people to learn what a documentary is (hint: this is wrong)

RIP to a true great. Koenig was by all accounts a great guy, and a great artist and intellect. He didn’t just embody Chekhov - I think he personally embodied a lot of what Star Trek is about.

George Takei@georgetakei.bsky.social

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

Koenig’s passing leaves Takei and Shatner as the only living ToS alums. Time is a brutal thing - though of course, their work will long outlive all of them. Might need to go home and watch some classic eps tonight. Good for the soul.

The fact of the matter is GTA VI is entering a meaningfully smaller console market than GTA V did in 2013 (when there were about 160 million PS3+360s, versus about 130 million PS5+XSs today), and the idea one game - no matter what it is - will change that trajectory is, well, *unsupported.*

Some folks have really tied themselves into knots with this belief bordering on zealotry that the release of the New Big Game is going to have millions and millions of new people buying current gen consoles next month that they'll twist every single piece of info into that story no matter what.

This is eminently reasonable, extremely well-argued, and essential reading. Erin is correct about all of this, and it is doubly urgent given what we've seen in the UK. 2026 is the time to correct the Dems about this. 2028 may be too late.

Erin Reed@erininthemorning.com

The elections are on next Tuesday, and so much is at stake, including the soul of the Democratic Party when it comes to transgender people. I am asking you to leave a very small number of races blank in which a Democrat has embraced extreme anti-trans hate. I make my case here.

Josh Turek made the calculation that he doesn't need the votes of trans people or our friends and allies, so I say we see if his calculation is right. But no one in their right mind would ever vote for a candidate that would take away their daily medication. You shouldn't expect it of trans people.

You all have seen Erin and I fiercely clash over tactics over the years, but this piece makes a wholly reasonable ask that I also endorse. The four in the header image especially suck shit.

The other big win for the anti-authoritarian side tonight, and something I need to read up on much more, because it’s an incredible and inspiring story.

The achievement of Serbian students overthrowing Aleksandar Vučić can't be overstated. In 2024, they began protesting. In 2025, they transformed a protest movement into civil dissidence. In 2026, they became a political party — and two months later, crushed a corrupt state-entrenched authoritarian.

John Oliver called JD Vance a “fucking cunt” multiple times tonight, on a story about the plague of Nazi-ism in the GOP, which is a pretty perfect way to celebrate his first show after Skydance bought HBO. Using the Ellison dollars to call these Nazis what they are is a good start.

If the Kansas Dems - one of the only Dem groups that’s proven they can win in deep red territory - can say this, then folks like Turek in Iowa have no excuse (besides genuinely held bigotry).

Kansas Dem Sen. nominee Adam Hamilton on trans rights: “I don’t think we should take a small group of people and bully them, pick on them, and hurt them. I understand one thing really clearly when it comes to transgender people, and that is Jesus told me I was to love my neighbor as I love myself”

What I wrote about Gavin Newsom a year ago is never more applicable to several Democrats today. I foresaw this coming, and I continue to hold this true.

Even putting the amorality aside (which we shouldn’t), what on earth is the point of this? This is not a high-salience issue for voters. Iowa has been hurt by Trump policies more than most states. There are so many other messages *that voters care about more* to send. You only do this to punch down.

Erin Reed@erininthemorning.com

Josh Turek of Iowa, Democrat, comes out with one of the worst anti-trans ads yet. Not only is it an anti-sports ad, it proposes a ban on federal funding for gender affirming care. That would hit all medicaid and medicare patients, and any ACA federally-subsidized plans as well. Horrific.

If the Senate map hinged on Iowa, I’d see the logic in voting for him anyway. But it doesn’t, and this behavior cannot be rewarded. Dems need to see clear data points of their candidates succumbing to the bigotry and losing anyway. I don’t think I could get to “yes” on Turek after this.

What matters most is this is morally wrong. Period. End of story. But it’s also electorally idiotic. “We will match the right policy for policy and just talk nicer” is what destroyed Labour in the UK. It’s how all of Reagan’s policies got embedded in daily life under Clinton. It NEVER works.

Turek has an impressive life story. He’s fought to get where he is. He should know as well as anyone the evils of discrimination. And yet, as he nears the top, he’s ripping up the ladder behind him. It’s fucking disgusting. What are voters supposed to glean from this except cowardice and cruelty?

If I still lived in Iowa, I’m not sure what I’d do here. I understand candidates in redder states are going to disagree with me on some things. I get that. I’m generally okay giving people latitude based on where they’re running. But Turek is pole vaulting over that line, and for what?

Ashamed to admit I am the kind of SAW fan who clicked through this, went “oh, it’s the theatrical cuts, not the unrated versions,” and closed my browser. I have become a snob about SAW edits. What am I anymore?

Trump's one genuine leap of true political insight is that he understands - and has from the beginning - how much of the mainstream media is as purely transactional as he is. He recognizes in them his own total lack of values, and knows that small bits of attention get him what he wants.

The Tennessee Holler @thetnholler.bsky.social

“Yeah I did it again, bitches. Fuck you, I like these dinners.” @billmaher lashes out, defends himself for having dinner with Trump again. He says Trump had good etiquette, never lost his temper or yelled… How nice! Imagine being this far up your own ass.

Maher just wants to go to fancy dinners and be treated like he's important. Pool reporters just want a constant drip-feed of soundbites, whatever the substance (even if you're just badmouthing them). Mainstream outlets want interviews and headlines. Trump gives them all this, and he reaps rewards.

Sorry still thinking of $1,200-$1,800 dollar console just conceptually. Those are Real Computer numbers. You can just get a real computer for that kinda cash. The entire premise of the console is “this is a baby computer you don’t control but it’s standardized and affordable” but they can’t do that.

Trump didn't like Ramaswamy until he saw him sticking up for child rapists and their enablers. He hated the Ivy League until Cornell had a prominent fraternity gang-rape story in the news. He's not just a rapist, not just a serial rapist—he's a rape *enthusiast,* and it's why Republicans love him.
