Brazil’s election had three winners, says Miguel Lago: Lula, civil society and Jair Bolsonaro, from his jail cell. “Lula’s Final Chapter”: a symposium from @equatormag.bsky.social and @alameda.institute, with Rodrigo Nunes, Anna Raposo de Mello and Juliano Fiori. www.equator.org/articles/bra...

The elections are on next Tuesday, and so much is at stake, including the soul of the Democratic Party when it comes to transgender people. I am asking you to leave a very small number of races blank in which a Democrat has embraced extreme anti-trans hate. I make my case here.

my last film of the festival. wish i liked it more than i did, but i’m open to doing so: the time to make up your mind about people is never. boxd.it/gYiyN1

i do feel like anyone surprised or disappointed by this has not really registered spiegelman’s career-long solipsism, which was as bad as crumb’s just with more dignified subject matter

Oh, shit. www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/...

“cartoonist navel-gazes” is of course the least surprising sentence ever uttered, but the long underground in particular had a real gift for producing generationally self-obsessed white men

there are many reasons paul f. tompkins should be considered a comedic genius, but his choice to perform fozzie bear as a serious dramatic role in live muppet script readings is a highlight for me

would have been the 1980 rerelease of Song of the South (1946), somewhere in or around Arizona’s Verde Valley. i was three at the time and haven’t lived in the area since i was six so no idea about venue and for all i know we drove to Phoenix for it. almost no memory of the film itself, just songs.

First film you saw at the cinema. The real first one, not the pretend one you tell people! Mine: The Empire Strikes Back, 1980, Wigan. We were near the front and I can still remember how massive the AT-ATs looked, looming over us out of the snow :) Film, year, where, and whatever stuck with you.

i have seen, or at least scrubbed through, the movie since, stirring faint memories, though stronger ones of a Disney picture book which just had the fables without the frame story. but when i say minstrelsy is at the heart of every american art form it’s biography as well as analysis.

Excited to launch The Rosetta Records Project, a forthcoming 3-LP compilation & community initiative channeling the feminist spirit of Rosetta Records, the 1st and only label to specialize exclusively in women’s blues & jazz music from the 1920s-50s. We're celebrating w/ a party in Mississippi 11/7!

looks like a pretty big spike in traffic to my website last week was ai (it's coming from a county mostly populated by data centers). i have the "tell ai not to crawl my website" checkbox marked, of course, but that's only as good as ai crawlers' compliance, which is plainly not to be trusted.

i still believe in the value of posting on the open web, of making my research and knowledge and insights available to anyone who is curious enough to find it. other people doing that was a big part of me learning as much as i have, and i don't want to have to padlock my work, say it ends with me.

but i also don't want to be used as fodder for the incompetent meaning-leached information extrusion machine. even if they reject them, i want people to evaluate my ideas on their merits, not get them at secondhand compressed into an undifferentiated paste with everyone else's. otherwise why bother?

looks like the php exploit has taken down one of the archives i've been working in this week, it's a race to the end of the year to see how much i can be prepared for my 2027 project

I'm hopefully taking a six-month work sabbatical to write a book about Pulp! But only if I can hit my goal on Kickstarter. So, please consider backing, or even better share with people who love Pulp as much as I do.

Just launched! Freaks, Mis-shapes, Weeds: A song-by-song exploration of every known Pulp recording, and life. 30 days left to make this happen! www.kickstarter.com/projects/jam...

glad i gave myself a not-seeing-a-movie day today, as i'm pretty tuckered out. had to do a lot of accounting at the job today and i don't think i have much brains left over

the cast? not the characters? well, there's not a lot a bunch of stage-trained British and Nigerian actors are going to be able to do about a kidnapping under the best of circumstances.
