There's an argument to be made that the Eagles defense has been more disappointing than the Eagles offense this season.

Brandon Lee Gowton@brandonleegowton.bsky.social

Entering this game, the Cowboys were on a two-game stretch with their lowest scoring output with Dak Prescott starting since 2019. Dallas now with a get-right performance against the Eagles' defense. Not good.

Not everything has to be controversial. It's a 50/50 call at least. Swing or no swing, I'm not even sure ABS for check swings would have confirmed it one way or the other. Sometimes, life's a coin flip.

erik@thelastbags.bsky.social

Looked closer live than it was because his hands are fast. But that's a swing.

That is, of course, until Goedert steps on a rake later today and gives himself a concussion or rabies or something.

The MLB playoffs have been almost entirely about the scarcity of offense and the desperate need for reliable relief pitching. What a wonderful feeling it must be to have a 1 or 2-run lead in the 7th inning or later and feel confident you can hold it! #Phillies

I am a sucker for these kinds of articles. I will always click on them.

Last night was magical. So Roob decided to do a deep dive of Philly's top-10 greatest comeback stories. Have a read: https://www.nbcsportsphiladelphia.com/nfl/philadelphia-eagles/greatest-comebacks-in-philadelphia-sports-history-lebron-james-kyle-schwarber-michael-vick/760905/

He probably would have been trying to trade AJ at this trade deadline and almost certainly wouldn't have gotten a 1st rounder for him.

Jimmy Kempski@jimmykempski.bsky.social

Howie didn't have a very good offseason, but the one great thing he did was get a 1 for A.J. Brown.

This is a great breakdown by Johnny Page. I love his idea of sending more route runners into the pattern against the blitz. Not only does it transform your mindset from one of a defensive posture, trying to keep more blockers in... it's not working. Get aggressive! Make them pay for blitzing!

Eagles Film Analysis: Can empty formations help solve the offense’s pressure problems? www.bleedinggreennation.com/philadelphia...

They won’t give us more information. Nick Sirianni specifically refused to answer any questions about the process, probably out of fear of lawsuits being filed.

Leonardo DiCatrio@pettingthecats.bsky.social

It's fun to speculate, but it's getting a bit out of hand. Let's wait for more information. I have a hard time believing this is true, the Eagles knew about it, and it was really 36 hours (was that amount including time after the game, flight home, etc...)

I’m no doctor, but it seems to me that if you have a medical condition where it’s too dangerous to sleep, you probably should not be playing a professional football game, either. You’ve failed to clear the “I’m allowed to sleep” bar.

Ian Rapoport@rapsheet.bsky.social

Eagles QB Jalen Hurts, who is out for the season after several blood clots were revealed in his lungs. Before the London game, Hurts was in the hospital until 4 am and did not sleep because sleep was a risk. He played the game without having slept. Crazy.

Man, we gotta stop with this. He is what he is. A 3-win, defense-first player who should be hitting 7th in a lineup who has two hot months, three ice cold months and one mediocre month. Every year. It's like clockwork.

This team is getting absolutely stripped down to the studs this off-season. There's going to be an entirely new coaching staff. Vic will retire. New head coach, new OC. Maybe they keep Hurts around, but with what around him? Hoo boy, dynasties end fast!

Jimmy Kempski@jimmykempski.bsky.social

During their four-game losing streak, the Eagles haven't gained more than 250 yards in any game, or allowed fewer than 375 yards in any game. They have a -723 yard differential.

Interesting factoid. The Phillies were the ONLY team in MLB to have 2 players, Bryce Harper (13th) and Kyle Schwarber (15th) in the top-15 in OPS among qualified hitters. In other words, these two guys are fine as your BIG bats. But they need a lot more help than they've been getting.

Prior to this year, the Brewers had made the playoffs in 7 out of 8 seasons. The only one they didn't was 2022, when they went 86-76 and just missed the 3rd wild card that the Phillies used. They've had more playoff heartbreak than anyone the last few years and overcame it. Can the Phillies?

I'm excited that a whole new generation of fans is going to learn about the 1982 Brewers now that the '26 version is back in the World Series, because that '82 team is an ALL-TIMER, man.

What if the Eagles’ offense moves the ball more consistently with Tanner McKee under center? Kind of an uncomfortable thought with regard to Jalen Hurts, but it’s possible.

So they would rather figure out shortstop on the fly next year in-season rather than go into the offseason planning for the inevitable. These are the kinds of loser decisions that cost you. These tone deafness of Dombrowski is staggering.

Todd Zolecki@toddzolecki.bsky.social

Dave Dombrowski said Trea Turner will open the season at SS, but he told him personally that he must play well there to stay there.

We recorded a NEW Hittin' Season last night, just hours before The Athletic's report on Don Mattingly returning as manager. So, just enjoy our uninformed speculation about all that and lots of other juicy bits as we dip into the Hittin' Season mailbag! @whyy.org open.spotify.com/episode/6NSw...

Fair point, but one of the reasons this happened was Mattingly had very few relievers he trusted, and rightfully so, so some guys just got overworked. This team put itself in a position to need EVERY win in August and September.

Chris@cjl78.bsky.social

Okay but one of the areas you need to improve is the bullpen which they can theoretically do with roster moves but won’t help if the manager blows everyones arms out

John Stolnis reposted

Who’s your all WIP caller coaching staff? I’ll go Manager- Chase Utley Pitching coach- Cole Hamels Hitting coach- John Kruk Bench Coach- Dave Hollins First base coach- Jimmy Rollins Third base coach- Shane Victorino Infield coach- Larry Bowa Bullpen coach- Brad Lidge

Joe Edinger@joeedinger.bsky.social

“Phillies requested permission to interview Chase Utley for their manager position” is such a WIP caller idea I cannot believe it actually happened

I couldn't be less concerned about who the Phillies' manager is. Do I love Mattingly? No. I hated how he used the bullpen this year. But I find myself saying that about every manager. No, this team only improves if Dombrowski fixes the roster. That's it. Firing some coaches is fine, but that's it.

The Phillies really don't have any ideas. It's wild.

From @jaysonst.bsky.social: The Phillies requested to interview to Chase Utley and Raul Ibañez for manager job. They said thanks but no thanks. More here: www.nytimes.com/athletic/769...

Agree with Mike, really good read. I wonder how much of this stuff the Phillies are doing or thinking about.

Mike Petriello@mikepetriello.bsky.social

Really good from @enosarris.bsky.social s on how Milwaukee and Tampa Bay are getting a ton of value out of modern Moneyball and data: www.nytimes.com/athletic/768...

I love that we just recorded a Hittin' Season podcast in which we spent the first 20 minutes talking about why Mattingly might not be back and openly wondering when Dombrowski's PC was going to take place. We never miss!

Phillies Nation@philliesnation.bsky.social

Dave Dombrowski will address reporters tomorrow (Thursday, Oct. 15) at 10:30 a.m. at Citizens Bank Park. Newly signed full-time Phillies manager Don Mattingly will speak to reporters at 11:30 a.m. on Zoom.

I don't mind this, but the manager was not high up on the list of problems. I also don't think this is necessarily a desirable landing spot.

I have doubts about Hurts, but consider he has: 1. ANOTHER offensive coordinator with NO experience, his 3rd. 2. A head coach with no system. 3. An inexperienced and talent-deprived OL. 4. No DeVonta Smith for 2 weeks. 5. No running game. At all. Hard to believe anyone could succeed with this.

Deniz Selman@denizselman33.bsky.social

Jalen Hurts ranks last among qualifying QBs in dropback success rate through Week 5. He has steadily been around league average in success rate (and generally above average in EPA/dropback) throughout his career. Small sample and injury caveats apply for now... #Eagles
