You fundamentally just cannot fight and win a war like this. There isnโt a military on earth that could effectively operate when your leadership is waffling back and forth on decisions on a daily basis for months on end. Itโs not sustainable. None of this is sustainable.
Timeline of Strategic Genius: Wednesday: Trump against helping Saudis fight Houthis Thursday: Gets a call from Crown Prince Salman, decides to join the fight Mid-day Sunday: Trump calls off airstrikes right as they were about to begin, declines to help Saudis (again)
This is the largest Foreign Military Sale to Ukraine under the Trump Administration to date.
๐บ๐ธ ๐บ๐ฆ The U.S. State Department has approved a possible Foreign Military Sale to Ukraine for Air Defense Development Upgrades for an estimated cost of $2.68 billion. The sale would be financed by European contributions and Foreign Military Financing funds.

It lives! A huge thank you to the friends and colleagues who helped refine this, and who have been arguing with me about the core premise for years now. Thank you also to the LC editorial staff for giving this a venue and for a smooth and very positive editing process. What a treat to write for.
โRussian strategists threaten civilian economic and cultural sites with the aim of brutalizing European populations into surrender. Russian targeting of churches and hospitals in Ukraine with dual-capable missiles is meant to foreshadow a similar fate for NATO populations.โ

Great thread and report. DOE/NNSA are wholly enmeshed in the scientific infrastructure of the country and it is a very mutually beneficial relationship for all the different stakeholders and for the American public. Any decision to reduce these relationships would be penny wise but pound foolish.
Often, NNSA labs & sites do work for other organizations through strategic partnership projects. NNSAโwhich is reimbursed for the workโand the other orgs both benefit, but as NNSAโs workload grows, so do concerns about its capacity for such work. #nukesky
Very pleased that Zach has finally released his long awaited video on ballistic missile defense. It is an excellent primer on several key concepts. I encourage everyone interested in the subject to give it a watch.
Well, it is finally done: A video going over ballistic missile defenses in a simple language: youtu.be/w3-DAxr1C0U about a year's worth of time/effort spent on it and even longer in terms of research!

Just for sense of scale, current U.S. Navy op tempo would be properly supported by a fleet of somewhere between fifteen and eighteen supercarriers. The fleet has eleven. โRidden hard and put away wetโ doesnโt begin to cover it.
But thereโs a difference between surface rust and structural rust. The United States Navy has many faults. One of them is how hard itโs forced to push the fleet. Itโs easy to keep a ship looking parade-ready in port. Thatโs not what warships are for, and thatโs not what the USN does.

Good thread Langston Hughes, who I am going to say understood this much better than I do or most people on this site do, called it 90 years ago. The idea of America the egalitarian anti-ethnostate, never fully and faithfully executed, is so important that it can never be surrendered.

Ok this is borderline malpractice from WaPo. Yes moving the islands would cost billions and years in delays. IT ALSO MAKES THE SHIP LESS EFFECTIVE. This is literally reducing combat effectiveness for aesthetics. www.washingtonpost.com/national-sec...

It is difficult to overstate how dumb most parts of this order are, let alone the whole thing. โMature parent designsโ in particular is fucking asinine. news.usni.org/2026/08/13/p...

They're really re-running the whole COINTELPRO playbook again, including the parts that were probably just lurid conspiracy theories last time.
Legal documents released today show federal law enforcement officials extensively surveilled public meetings and activists during the ICE surge, and created dossiers on political enemies. I've been busy, but will post some takeaways on this thread soon: (1) www.mprnews.org/story/2026/0...

repost for visibility in the wider #nukesky and non hashtagged bluesky nuclear community; there is some new FOIA going around about plutonium pit production and as ever in this space, there is much more than meets the eye
This is a very difficult one to discuss in public but I think people need to be careful about tea leaf reading too hard on the JASON summaries. The most obvious first: if the report *did* identify an imminent concern w/reliability of the deployed stockpile, that alone would be a TS statement.

Romer is saying this because she knows that her real views about what ought to happen to the innocents of Ukraine are far too extreme and too ugly for a podcast.
Remnick: So we shouldn't send weapons to Ukraine? DSA co-chair Megan Romer: No! Remnick: So, just allow Russia to overrun Ukraine entirely? Romer: We should be sending huge teams of diplomats. We should figure out how to negotiate.w

I dislike the Cheese boy's takes as much the rest of you but this is simply not true. There are more surface ships under construction at Bath and Ingalls today than the South Korean Navy has bought in the last 15 years. We shit on the Cheese because he is a realist who debases himself for Trump.
Yet the crisis of US shipbuilding is so bad that the US Navy is ordering ships from Korean or Italian firms and US logistics depend on bases among allies Colby is typical for an elite so marinated in myths of its power that it forgot to sustain real structures it needs to survive

Has there perhaps been some event taking place in the last 12 years which might be important for understanding why Europe is militarizing?
The study shows militarisation is a bad economic deal: higher military spending leaves Europe less prosperous, with fewer jobs and lower-quality development. Spending instead on environment, education, and health would boost output and employment more. www.greenpeace.org/static/plane...

The abolitionist signer of the Declaration of Independence Benjamin Rush said in 1787 that the war was over but the Revolution was not. That the war was only the first act of the great drama of perfecting a new government and preparing its citizens' "principles, morals and manners" for self-rule.

Yeah in case anyone is not clear on it, a significant portion of the modern right actively fantasizes about murdering you. Registered Dem? You. Sociology major? You. Interracial marriage? Definitely you. None of us have the luxury of pretending we are safe. You should have a plan.

*preps block button* If USAID is the vanguard of American imperialism*, thatโs objectively the least deadly the imperialism the world has ever seen, and the world should be grateful for American subtlety and restraint.
Whenever I hear someone claiming that USAID was evil from a leftist perspective, I hear someone saying โyes, millions ARE dying because Musk and Trump killed USAID, but at least theyโll die free of American imperialism.โ Notably it is never the people saying this who are dying.

I would be very hesitant to assign specific blame to either Grok or Maven Smart System, absent specific evidence. There are multiple different points in the targeting process where a mistake could have been made. Remember the school adjoined an IRGCN installation. Bad inputs lead to bad outcomes.
Did DoD just admit in a court filing that it used xAI's Grok Gov Model to hit the girls' school on the first day of the Iran war? Based on some passages flagged by @rgoodlaw.bsky.social in DoD's recent filing in NAACP's case against X, it looks like it did 1/

Iran was strategically on the back foot. Loss of Syrian proxies, inability to restore deterrence against Israel or the US, GCC states slowly accepting Israel in the region, sanctions generally working...and then we put them in a position to gamble for resurrection and boy howdy did they.
Oh yeah, this is clearly a defeat. We threw away $30bn+, plus whatever danegeld we're paying, plus 15 American lives, plus a whole bunch of airframes, plus we antagonized a lot of other states, in order to put Iran in a stronger strategic position than they were when we started. Absolute disaster.

no one is ready to really talk about how many of their wholesome chungus leftie faves were witting or unwitting KGB operations lmao
a lot of this is strictly downstream of literal Cold War stuff. it's not like the CIA was the only org doing influence ops in adversary countries and it's past time that the American left applied some of the same critical lens to its own lineage.

This was a bad study for many reasons, not least of which that it rigged the results implicitly in favor of nuclear weapons, but the computers behaved relatively typical of human decision makers. Can we stop talking about it please? I donโt want to retype my screed about how awful it was.
Researchers gave three commercial AI models an exercise typically used to train human military strategists. Each system played the leader of a nuclear-armed country in a standoff. Across 21 simulations, the models chose to use nuclear weapons in all but one game. Read more from Hiranya Peiris.
