I see we're doing (re)intros here as more comics folk migrate to BlueSky, so here goes. I'm John Lees. I'm a writer based in Glasgow, Scotland. Credits include Sink, And Then Emily Was Gone, Hotell, The Crimson Cage, Mountainhead, The Standard, Oxymoron: The Loveliest Nightmare, TMNT and The Nasty.

I'm not naive enough to believe Republicans haven't always been this racist, but the fact they feel sufficiently liberated to be so open about it now, with the media apparently just reporting it as regular political discourse, really is a five-alarm fire.

RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

It would be really nice if it could stop pouring with rain long enough for me to get the Halloween decorations out in the garden. I actually had a bunch of it up early, then had to take much of it down again with the storm.

Digger, Whalefall, Clayface, now Wildwood… I’m getting stressed out about all these “poor box office, I guess nobody cares about movies like this” articles about films I’ve been actively hyped for, but which are all coming out in one big two-per-week cluster when I’m too busy to leave the house.

I want to ask reporters what else exactly they want from Beth Upton. They wanted her booted out of female changing rooms, they got it. They wanted her on trial for misconduct, they got it, she was found totally blameless. They wanted her publicly named and shamed in the media, they got it…

…they wanted her driven out of the NHS, again despite having done nothing wrong, they got it. Then they wanted her hounded out of the country, and they got that too, celebrated it. But even that’s not enough. If I were to ask when they’ll be sated, the honest answer would be a wink and “You know.”

Here's Lula celebrating tonight with Erika Hilton, a transgender politician who led the drive to end the six-day work week in Brazil. Erika showed workers solidarity, they showed her solidarity back. Solidarity is how fascism loses.

I hope Netanyahu is shitting himself.

In one day, two politicians - Bolsonaro in Brazil and Vucic in Serbia - with ties to Trump have lost surprise elections thanks to high turnout. The rise of the international far-right is not inevitable.

None of us should forget this. Meta should be subjected to corporate death penalty and permanently broken up into small pieces.

It's really important to pay attention to the fact that Lula beat the fascist candidate not by compromising and trying to meet fascist voters in the middle, but by sticking to his guns, promising prosecutions for election interference, and mobilising his own voters to turn out in greater numbers.

Lula has won a fourth term in spite of Meta, after Brazil’s electoral court had to order platforms to stop throttling his reach while they boosted his Trump-backed opponent. Big Tech tried to rig this but the Brazilian people had the final say ✊

I hate how Instagram timeline will feed you AI slop of subjects you are interested in, so your choices are either hitting Not Interested and risking it messing with what you see on your timeline, or having to manually go onto the account to block, which could be read as interest in more AI slop.

You’d think that news of Jason Arday being officially cleared of all wrongdoing after the media hounded him to death might prompt some reflection, but instead it has merely reminded the media of someone else officially cleared of all wrongdoing who they couldn’t quite finish the job on.

Another one here where the British press just smashed fuck out of a member of the public’s life for no good reason, just because they wanted to and nobody will stop them doing at. And they’re still going, even now.

Imagine feeling like your country's newsmedia could at any time turn its back and begin this level of hate campaign against you, to the point that they harass you and everyone you love to the literal ends of the earth, mining you for content until your death and even after. How would you live life?

I’ve been on X the past couple days, posting a few things about Rowling, which drew “interest” from her fans. A few quick observations:

Billie Jean Sweeney@billiejsweeney.bsky.social

Rowling *never* writes about women’s rights, workplace discrimination or the threats to women from predatory men. I tracked her posts for five months: Well over 200 hateful transphobic smears. Not a single post about women’s actual concerns or needs None

Replying to @billiejsweeney.bsky.social

I’ll have a new story soon on the Trump administration’s abandonment of sexual assault investigations under Title IX. Rigorous enforcement ofc would protect women. Trump has instead diverted resources away from rape investigation toward anti-trans initiatives. This, he says, is “protecting women”

Shockingly, calling on trans people to make a noble sacrifice and throw their support behind a candidate campaigning on harming them in order to help other people for whom this candidate will be better is not a rousing vote-winner.

This is the thing so many centrists do that drives me crazy. Yes, the democrats, labour, whatever will be better *for you* but looking trans people in the eye, confirming no parties care about them then getting pissed off at them for not being a free vote for your guy is a mix of stupid and cruel.

The democratic candidate will be better for you no doubt- telling people who are trans that both sides fucking hate them and getting mad that they don’t then vote for your choice of horrible person is a ridiculous position to take. At the very least let trans people express their anger you dolt.

I can never participate in any of the “I hate __ Halloween, what do you mean…?” memes, because I love Halloween in all its forms. 🥹

I’m almost finished with the Carrie series, and it’s quite fascinating how, on an episode-by-episode basis, I’ve been engrossed, it’s a good show and there’s so much I like about it, but also I want to write an essay-length piece on all the things I feel it’s got wrong.

Kevin McKenna can stop talking about "gay men and women" right now thanks. There is absolutely nothing homophobic, aggressive or otherwise, about *trans people existing*.

Every so often you hear people ask what "Israel Palestine has to do with us". Beyond the ignorance of that statement, it's also this. To now say that an infant is deserving of murder is just a passive statement that won't receive much media attention or scrutiny, nobody will be held accountable

JUST IN: The police shooting that killed 1-year-old Kohen Wiley as he sat in his mother’s lap in a Walmart parking lot in Senatobia, Miss., in June “was justified,” Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch’s office said on Monday. Her office will not charge the white officer who shot the child.

It really does feel like these AI companies are in a mad dash to get themselves embedded into as many industries and governments as possible before the inevitable crash comes, so they can then use how embedded they are in everything to get a massive bailout.
