Fantastic evening with the legendary Patti Smith talking about her book ‘Bread of Angels’ at Royal Festival Hall as part of London Literature Festival. Patti was inspiring and moving and must be a dream to interview but Dua Lipa was a superb and thoughtful interviewer.

RIP Donal Lunny. A frequent contributor to the soundtrack of my life over many years. I was blessed to have seen him perform live and I’ve lost count of how many albums I have that he has contributed to, but this one still holds a special place. Fly well.

Super stripped back set by Sarah Tandy at RoughTrade in Denmark Street for the release of her new album 'Delicious Capricious'. Joined by the fabulous Binker Golding on saxophone with guest appearances from Tee Peters and Kyra.

Sondheim and Lapine’s ‘Into The Woods’ at Noël Coward Theatre this afternoon was just fabulous. Kate Fleetwood (The Witch) and Laura Pitt-Pulford (The Baker's Wife) outstanding. Highly recommend. Runs until 9 January 2027.

“First single you bought with your own money. No lying!" Elvis Presley’s 1976 single reissue of The Girl of My Best Friend. You can read about it here: johnearls.substack.com/p/film-revie...

“First single you bought with your own money. No lying!" Bought from Brierleys in Leicester summer 1972 with my pocket money. youtu.be/VBEcLxnXVAc?...

The personal and political mixing of economics and culture given powerful and moving theatrical effect in James Graham’s new play about John Maynard Keynes, ‘The Standard of Living’ at London’s Theatre Royal Haymarket. Rory Kinnear is excellent. Recommend.

English National Ballet’s energetic ‘Rhythm Riot’ at Sadlers Wells is a triple bill full of variety and propulsive beats. The Balanchine ‘Symphony in Three Movements’ opener was just fabulous as were the orchestra under Maria Seletskaja playing Stravinsky’s score.

Delighted to make my @detailmag.bsky.social debut in the just released Autumn issue with a piece on the cultural significance of 1960s BBC TV programme Jazz 625. A real thrill to see my words combined with the always excellent Detail design. You can order a copy here: www.detailmaguk.com
