Update: $21k of the $25k raised! Unfortunately, their insurance didn’t cover everything they lost and a lot of the money will go to cover that gap, so meeting this goal would be a huge help for them. Please continue to share, and thanks everyone for donating/sharing already!

Andria and her husband suffered a terrible loss last night as their house burned down. They both made it out, but lost all of their things and three beloved cats in the fire. Please consider donating/sharing with others. Andria is such a kind person and amazing translator. gofund.me/b49a76f41

Have you been working in the publishing side of localization (translation, editing, lettering) and want to share (publicly or anonymously) your concerns heard? I'm working on a story about just that. My dms are open and I'm also over on signal (riderstrike.152).

my take is that requiring editorial staff to commute to any high cost of living city is exacerbating poor working conditions across the industry

Would be so interested to see stuff like “Shirahata no Shojo” as well. Seems like it might hit hard for those who were moved by grave of the fireflies while also covering Okinawa‘s bombardment in the war

The first mention of Okinawa in popular media I encountered, the battle was used as a joke in That '70s Show, accompanied by a laugh track and my mom's reminder 1/3 of the island died Translating this book was an emotional process because I wish it had existed while I was growing up

I think there's room for more books like these to come to the US and to make their way across the globe, like Kenshin Shinzato's work or Kohei Toyonaga's novels, so please consider buying books like cocoon and Okinawa or requesting them at your local library to show publishers there's an interest

In cocoon's story and in real life, the Himeyuri girls headed south, where the battle was most deadly. My grandmother's siblings did the same, while my grandmother fled north and survived

The recollections I read for research from the Himeyuri women who survived will likely be the closest I'll ever get to knowing what happened to my grandmother's siblings, since they did not come out of the war to tell their stories

Yes! Read Cocoon, out tomorrow!

English edition of Cocoon is out at last this week! Read it!! It's been one of my favourite books since I first encountered it. I even wrote a couple essays about it!!

...schedule out follow up projects further in advance. I'd have much less stress if I coule schedule out concretely what projects each publisher/agency will have me doing which months and not be overwhelmed one month and scrambling for work another.

I lettered this! Akari is stunning, and Kohinata's mark-making is unmatched. Such a love letter to art and the impact i can have on one's life and the bonds it can forge It's debuting at TCAF (coincidentally, I'll be there tabling too!), and I can't wait to hold it in my hands!

Glacier Bay Books@glacierbaybooks.com

NEW TITLE - Akari by Marco Kohinata A quietly beautiful standalone story about mistaken identity, found family, and the profound power of art. Marco Kohinata’s warm, softly textured lines and shading subtly evoke the color and shape, the fullness and complexity of human emotion.

1. I'm definitely burnt out, having a real hard time forcing myself to do work nowadays. 2. I've been recently doing a lot of outside activities and slowly taking on less work, but that's much easier said than done. 3. Double the pay (at least) so I can work on less things and actually live.

Jan Mitsuko Cash reposted

1. Yes, very 2. l will probably never recover until I quit entirely and am a few years removed 3. I think every publisher should double their rates :) and for some even that would still be too low

Jan Mitsuko Cash reposted

1. Yes 2. N/A 3. Increase rates to at least match the minimum of other parts of the industry (for lettering, 15 USD per page instead of 3 USD or even less) so localizers don't need to overload on projects to make a living wage. Work for hire and rights handover must come with adequate compensation

Since rates are often so low, I feel like people often take on more work than they can reasonably handle simply because the work is available and they need the money. With freelance work being the way it is, they have to plan ahead just in case the next project takes a while to come in.

Freelancing has been great for me as a flexible source of pocket money as a SAHM to young children, but I've always said that I couldn't afford to work in this field if I needed to support myself. My best friend makes a stable living freelancing in PR/marketing translation, entertainment underpays.

Shoutout to a certain company, who, when I said that I needed either a short hiatus or longer deadline for a series I had already TL'd almost 20 volumes of because I was getting severely burnt out, simply reassigned the series and dropped me from the roster without so much as a farewell 🙃

Jan Mitsuko Cash@jmitsu.bsky.social

Some people may believe freelance should only be a side job, but we're expected to be available on call for simulpubs and to give fast turnarounds on other work as though we're full time. If we say we can't, we're taken off the series or the offer gets rescinded

With manga, if a freelancer tries to make as much as an in-house employee, we have to work on 50-70+ books, and we pay higher self-employment taxes + don't have access to affordable health insurance. To keep up with inflation, we take more work. It's a recipe for burn out and getting sick

the rate I earn for game translation has stayed pretty stagnant from 2016 to now, except the yen has tanked since then, so I actually took about a 30% pay CUT, not even counting inflation and the cost of living... book/manga rates increase incrementally, but barely keep up with inflation.

Olivia Hill@machineiv.bsky.social

Spread for reach, please? In the past 20 years, have your wages increased more than the cost of living? Or has the cost-of-living out stripped your wages’ growth?
