I officially have a tv show launching today! History in 60 is a show, on @accessiblemedia.bsky.social, that takes a deep dive into Canadian disability history. It premiers today at 9 Eastern and I'm so thankful to have the team that we've had on this production! To learn more, visit h60.ca

h60.caHistory in 60 | Disability rights in Canada TV SeriesHistory in 60 is a short-form documentary series hosted by journalist John Loeppky that explores pivotal moments from Canadian disability history and then presents them in just one minute.

As someone who has worked with @katelynburns.com in the past, I can confidently say she is one of the most fearless journalists I know and it shows in her work. We need more of this in h world.

As a journalist, I’ve covered the anti-trans movement in Canada for almost a decade at this point. There’s a lot of room for change from here. My advice tonight is that we all slow down, take a big breath, and ready ourselves for the actual fights to come—and don’t panic over the imaginary ones.

And yeah, there’s some alarm bells from what they’ve promised, like repealing SOGI and the parental rights stuff. But nowhere in their platform is an immediate trans health ban or bathroom bill or anything like that. Not to say that can’t ever happen. But it’s definitely not happening tomorrow.

First off, read @thetyee.ca and andrea’s work broadly. Second, I think a thing we don’t talk about enough—though there are people talking about it—is that media outlets are already seeing audiences rally against AI. AI changes the stories that drive revenue but that’s just a thing that happens.

andrea bennett (they/them)@akkabah.bsky.social

a lot of people in my life ask me when (not if) AI will take my job & lately i've just been deadpan telling them that if i do lose my job* to AI i will be more sad about what that says about the reading skills of the general public than what it says about me. * I won't, bc of The Tyee's values

Today @nickdnperez.bsky.social & I FINALLY published an investigation we — and a host of supporting @the74.bsky.social players — have been working on for months. TLDR: We crunched the $$$ to show how a controversial autism therapy is enriching private equity at the expense of vulnerable kids. 1/

Today I go from being on camera, to writing, to being on camera, to writing. And can I just say, I’m bad at being proud of myself but goodness gracious am I proud and grateful to have this life.

I will never stop recommending folks work with @tmziniuk.bsky.social and the folks @xtramagazine.com

Xtra is hiring a social video producer! Remote (anywhere in Canada), part-time (21 hrs/wk), fun (I think)! We want someone experienced w/ social video & knowledgeable about LGBTQ2S+ politics & culture in Canada and the U.S.; the serious, the unserious, the discourse. www.linkedin.com/jobs/view/44...

Obviously going to use other avenues, but timely source request as I'm reporting on the recent Section 504 decision. DM's should be open or email John@Jloeppky.com. Looking to speak to lawyers with disability expertise (and lived experience if applicable).

If you are a journalist and you take not understanding sports as a badge of honour, I promise you that’s not the flex you think it is.

And I don’t mean not understanding the sports themselves, I mean not grasping that sports drives readership and some of the most interesting political and social commentary comes from the sports world, at a minimum.

sometimes when i get annoyed about people using AI for everything, I just remember "at least I will be able to think for myself in a decade and not be a zombie" and that gets me through the day

I promised to answer some reader questions in this week's newsletter and want to give Bluesky folks a chance to join in, so drop your burning questions below! I'll tackle them here and maybe snag some for the newsletter. #AMA

Some days are filled with bad news and then you get an email that the biggest gripe with your niche laptop is going to be fixed and you become tempted (sorry @markyarm.bsky.social and all others I've pitched to over the years) to pitch a very niche PC hardware story on why this makes you happy.

Yes anding this to say, or--and I'm about to sound grumpy--it is being written about and readers (and this includes fellow journalists) are not reading broadly enough to find that coverage.

Canadian journalists, please help me out to spread the following message: If you are a freelancer with CBC (or an employee, but this is aimed at freelancers) who needs support given the current wildfires in Canada, please get in touch. John@Jloeppky.com.

if generative AI was really inevitable we would see one person who fucks that uses it.

I was too busy getting stung by a swarm of wild bees this morning to boost this but uh I'm still 38 subscribers short of my goal. Progress has been slow! Please repost to help me out. The next edition of my newsletter drops Wednesday and will be subscriber-only, so it's a great time to join!

Resharing so people read @nikostratis.com but also to say, I worked in some of the evacuation centres in the late 2010's. It's an experience that I will never forget and both lots of media coverage and social media discourse on this is exhausting to read/watch.

Seeing a lot of jokes and whatever about the fires, but these fires are devastating. Homes and lives and communities are gone, and will continue to dissapear as the problem gets worse. Homes burn as our leaders announce pipelines while flipping pancakes at a fake rodeo.

For a possible journalism project. Looking for topics that may seem, at first glance, like they aren't connected to disability or disability culture. Please comment or DM any that you would like to see me cover!

To s.e's point, even figuring out who counts as a small business in the US and Canada is really odd. Depending on industry, gross revenue, headcount, and location. Case in point, the number is always higher than you'd expect.

Following up on this with reporting I helped with because my dear friend won't mind. If you want to read more about how disaster recovery doesn't meet the needs of disabled people, check out this article from @discojourno.bsky.social discojourno.com/national/dis...

I was told by a worker at @hi-advocacy.bsky.social today that a hospital where disabled people specifically received treatment was decimated in the earthquake, leaving many dead. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

If anyone is looking for an experienced journalist (me) to teach at their university or college, please reach out. Finally feeling solid enough in my career to believe I can teach this as an instructor.

Is there a good article on how frustrating it is to try to learn web design when all of these platforms who used to be focused on learning boil down to "just use AI" whenever I search anything?

I'm looking for another org or two that could speak to local efforts to cut ties with an FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force. A handful of cities have done it, including Portland and Oakland. I want to know who's next! 👀 This is for reporting @truthout.org. RTs appreciated #journorequest
