This is just getting stupid. I guess the plan will probably be to do another study? I know Jersey City gets a lot of respect for its Vision Zero progress, but sad to say, the department got taken over by a traffic engineer, and I don't know that we know how to quick build anymore.

SafeStreetsJC@safestreetsjerseycity.org

#JCcrashes 😡 Just 8 days later, Montgomery & Merseles, another pedestrian crash. This afternoon around 4pm, a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle. JCMC responded. Montgomery & Merseles desperately needs improved traffic calming.

E-motos are a disaster, but PeopleForBikes are also responsible for this mess. They invented the super-complicated three class bike system that encouraged the ambiguous class 3 e-bikes. No one understands the system including the police who would be responsible for enforcing these classifications.

Kea Wilson@keawilson.bsky.social

The other day, I got a press release claiming that ER visits among kids linked to e-bike crashes had increased *19.1 times over* in just 3 years. It almost certainly isn't true —  but the injured children are very real. Broke down what's really causing the bloodshed and who can finally stop it.

Hindsight 20-20, but I've never heard them ever admit it was a mistake. They were literally the lobbyists that created the confusion and got this morass of state laws installed everywhere. I am grateful low-speed e-bikes exist, but you have to 1) correctly describe the world and 2) fix what's broken

With the benefit of hindsight – which we should take every advantage of – what it should be IMHO is: 1. No registration or insurance for low-speed devices under 20 mph 2. Register everything else under existing laws (moped or motorcycle laws) 3. Point-of-sale registration with proof of insurance

It is nonsense that NJ-NYC bus commuters at the *peak hour* are subjected to a sudden +30 minutes to their commutes. Construction is not the excuse the Port Authority / NYCDOT think it is.

Props to the Hudson County Clerk for going above and beyond to make early voting available to Hudson County voters. Hudson-level access to IPEV sites should be the norm across NJ.

Yes, what about cyclists?! IG commenter on the same post having an extremely normal one after someone on a *motorcycle* runs over a high schooler walking to school.

#JCcrashes 😡 Montgomery & Merseles. This morning a high schooler crossing Montgomery was hit by a motorcycle. This is an important school route, but Montgomery & Merseles is a wide, fast, and dangerous intersection, and the crossing guard often tells students to run when crossing. /

I’m proud to endorse the “For Stronger Schools” slate for the Jersey City Board of Education. Jessica Taube, Danielle Walker, Chloe Williams, and Gina Verdibello are independent, active in the community, and they each have a strong track record of advocating for our students.

#JCcrashes Yet another crash tonight. Two-car crash at Summit and Montgomery. We don't know details, but we know that one-ways reduce crash danger by eliminating dangerous conflicted left-turns, the most common danger at intersections.

Paris is burning. But it's not just Paris, it's all over France. In Limoges they burned a renowned 143 year-old historic building, which was their town hall. They are targeting city halls. Filming while looting everywhere. Really disturbing stuff that's going to be very bad for democracy.

Hot take: Turn on red is actually safer in areas where traffic is low because the real danger is turn on green: 1. Red. Traffic is waiting, and pedestrians aren't crossing 🤷 2. Green, conflicted. People are crossing while cars want to go ❌ 3. Green, no conflict. People cross with no traffic ✅

All the stats say NTOR will basically save zero lives. It is hard to study because most crashes are left turns – 17X more dangerous than right turns – and the vast majority of right turn crashes occur on green lights when drivers don't even have to stop before turning.

Social media has been really ideological on this. People need to question the lack of sources / better understand statistics of very small numbers. NTOR is a big distraction from all the actual proven effective Vision Zero strategies: lower speeds, narrow lanes, turn calming, protected bike lanes.

The crossing guard here intuitively knows this and waves cars to make the turn on red even though the sign says precisely the opposite. Then the kids can cross safely on green without cars bearing down on them. Notice if we think drivers won't yield properly, it won't matter if we put up NTOR signs.

I noticed that Newark Light Rail trains idle at Newark Penn Station 😭 I think I can see why. In a world where you don't run enough service, wait a little bit at the big commuter rail/bus/PATH station so people don't miss their transfers. But what if we just ran frequent light rail service??

Encounter with an entitled dog owner at the laundromat today. Dog is tied to a light open backpack unattended. Dog realizes he can do whatever he wants, starts walking out the door as I'm walking in. I tap the dog to go back in. "Don't touch my dog!" and went on-and-on. Reminds me of car people.

Have you noticed trash cans missing from your neighborhood? As part of the City’s in-house trash collection pilot, public trash cans were removed from residential streets — without any warning. Residents are dealing with more litter and dog waste, and fewer places to dispose of everyday garbage.

Illustration of one of the indignities of getting around Newark. Super wide seven lane surface highway in the middle of downtown. So of course the benches have to face away from the traffic. Not going to be a comfortable place to sit regardless. More of an attempt at delineating away from the cars

#JCcrashes Good thing this driver in Lincoln Park didn't hit a person. Hudson County + Jersey City need to start taking safety near schools and parks seriously. We need safe street design and enforcement. Quick builds, not studies. @hudcostreets.org @jerseycitynj.bsky.social

More car related chaos in Jersey City. A driver crashed into a tree in Lincoln Park. How could something like this happen? www.reddit.com/r/jerseycity...

😂 Jersey City public works out here doing their best rendition of "the beatings will continue until morale improves". Every time you report a trash can that's overflowing, they remove it altogether. (Please no one report the ones by me... 😅) www.nj.com/news/2026/10...

#JCcrashes Newark & 6th St. Yesterday a white sedan was following too closely in the rain and crashed into the vehicle in front of it. Newark Ave has many pedestrian crossings, and drivers must be prepared to stop at all times. Reminder also that distracted driving can easily cause crashes like this

SafeStreetsJC@safestreetsjerseycity.org

#JCcrashes 😡 Hit-and-run last night on Newark Ave near Coles St. Cyclist was biking down Newark Ave when hit by a black SUV which drove away after the cyclist landed on their hood. Looking for any information about the driver.

My tolerance for chaos is pretty high (probably too high), but standing kickscooters are *really* chaotic. Guy didn't yield at a stop sign and then swiveled to cross behind my bike and jump from the road to the sidewalk. Turn radius is too tiny, and hard to predict what line they will take.

jimmybot@jimmybot.com

I am pro-safe but unsanctioned mobility behaviors. Firetrucks blocking the bike lane so you're biking on the sidewalk? No problem. Idaho stop? Great. Biking wrong-way and pushing right-way cyclists into the car lane? Insanely anti-social and wrong.

I get to post about it 1st: NJ finally voted to raise premiums for its State Health Benefits Plan. Expect another round in the death spiral. Gov Sherrill's campaign rec'd reference-based pricing (RBP): cap hospital prices at a % of what Medicare pays. Strangely, the legislature is not acting.

Rainy Sunday, would be a great day to head to the library. Oh wait, unlike most major cities, Jersey City closes all libraries on Sundays 😅 But HCCC library is open! If you are looking for a place to read and browse (but not borrow), any Hudson County resident with a muni library card can access.

Is this area of NJ on either side of 280 but in between train lines known to feel especially soul-less and car-centric? Just endless 4-lane high-speed roadways and strip malls and low-density with no variation in form. Feels like it makes a lot of sense Livingston Mall died.

Holymoly. Imho general calming deserves a lot of credit here in addition to Citibikes and PBL network. With e-bikes and getting people to mostly drive 25 mph, it isn't that bad riding residential streets with traffic. Long way to go to make it accessible to all ages and abilities, but good progress.

One of the most important things in Hudson County in many years. JFK is Hudson County's Boulevard of Death. BRT would make JFK safer by: 1. Redesigning JFK to be safer for all road users 2. Shifting traffic to transit. Buses are *60X* safer per passenger mile than private cars. Be there!

Better Blocks NJ@betterblocksnj.bsky.social

We heard you want your buses fast, free from traffic, and on-time. Attend the Hudson County Bus Rapid Transit meeting this Wednesday to help make that a reality. betterblocksnj.org/2026/09/21/w...

1. It's really important the NHJ wrote this whether you agree with her other ideas or not 2. Lack of public school teacher accountability is completely core to the issue here, and it goes far beyond the worst schools. 3. Like JCPS, funding not the issue Gift link: www.nytimes.com/2026/09/20/m...

Even in Jersey City, traffic engineering will drag their feet for years about a simple problem like a dangerous intersection missing stop signs. It truly is a lot easier when the local councilperson is in your corner fighting for safer streets. Thank you Councilwoman @eleanalittle.bsky.social

Eleana Little@eleanalittle.bsky.social

I’m proud to announce that the new stop signs on 1st & Brunswick and 3rd & Brunswick are finally here — just in time for back to school! Thank you to the Department of Infrastructure for your hard work and all the community advocates for pushing to get this done.

Despite traffic engineer reluctance, all-way stops are one of the safest intersection designs, safer than traffic lights, and Jersey City has slowly added them. The problem with intersections with traffic lights is the speeds are higher, and there is turn on *green*, without needing to stop first.

CDBG funds can be used for a lot of beneficial purposes. Blowing a MILLION dollars on a community garden for the benefit of an exclusive set of residents linked with a three-year-old "community board" does not seem like a good use of money when our streets and public parks are in a poor state.

jimmybot@jimmybot.com

@eleanalittle.bsky.social Unbelievable that we are considering wasting a million dollars during a housing shortage and after a giant 15% property tax increase. Two people were just killed on Jersey City streets. Where are the flex posts? Where is the left turn calming? Why is 20 mph still delayed?

The beginnings of a low traffic neighborhood are taking shape at a Greenpoint school, where parents have organized for safer streets since a driver killed a local teacher five years ago. nyc.streetsblog.org/2026/09/09/d...

Jersey City paid for a private easement to become a permanent part of the Brunswick Community Garden. This "community" garden no longer had public hours since the pandemic and were in no hurry to ever restore it. Maddening. Public spending on parks good, on private gardens bad.

Better Blocks NJ@betterblocksnj.bsky.social

JC raised taxes 15% and cut park maintenance. Thursday the council votes to spend $1.2M on a vacant lot — to lease it for $1/yr as a garden open ~610 hrs a year. A developer already has approval for 3- and 4-BR family apartments there. Vote it down. betterblocksnj.org/2026/09/07/a...

There are other parks that could sorely use the money if the money must be spent. Mary Benson Park next to PS 5 was supposed to be renovated but some NIMBYs somehow thought 5 stories instead of 4 stories next to the Turnpike was too high.
