I cannot seem to get away from Frankenstein this month.

The Midnight Society@midnightpals.bsky.social

Stephen King: guys! guess what! King: i just got back from the univera Frankenstein animatronic sound and stage spectacular ride probably in universal studios or something! King: and boy are my arms tired! Koontz: Poe: Barker: Lovecraft: Joe Hill: you told it wrong, dad King: wait let me start over

I'm a teacher. In addition to my education degrees, I have a state license. Without my state license, I would not be a teacher; I'd just be overqualified for most other people's jobs.

Zacharia: "A lot of the misinformation, miscommunication is around the fact that I labeled myself a lawyer. I consulted for a long time many people in the field -- 'Is it ok if I label myself a lawyer?' -- and they said, 'Absolutely. You can call yourself a lawyer. You have a JD'"

Interviewer: Can you explain these gaps in your resumé? Teacher: Well, it's a living document. I look forward to collaborating in PLCs to fill in those spaces.

Steve Bowler@gameism.bsky.social

Interviewer: Can you explain this gap in your resume? Principal Technical Designer: As designed. Will not fix. Also, no, will not explain.

If you feel the need to follow up a post with "Yes, I know this is AI," as though you're acknowledging that AI is a bad thing (which it is, and nice of you to catch up), maybe don't make the post in the first place. This is a sub-skeet.

Related to this, I gave a recent lesson on rejecting the notion of "geniuses," and I worried that I might be tarred and feathered by a bunch of HS sophomores with G/T labels. It will be worth it, they're great kids, but it was a rough day.

Faine Greenwood@faineg.com

like I suspect many of you on This Website, I think a core reason why I find Eliezer Yudkowsky and his rationalist and effective altruist satellites so intensely annoying is because I had a VERY similar “being a super weird, pretentious, hyper-literate kid” experience - I just, you know, grew up.

The class that is currently reading Richard III and listening to me rant about the differences between OE and EM will be reading excerpts from Maria's translation of Beowulf in the next unit, because it's the kind of course where I get to do whatever I want.

Maria Dahvana Headley @mariadahvana.bsky.social

Ask me how many times people who hear that I translated an Old English epic have insisted that Old English is just Shakespeare (whose plays are written in Early Modern English.) Note: someone just screwed up, it's not gonna be in Old English, folks.

Students at the high school where I teach are circulating a petition to stop the use of generative AI by staff at all levels of the district, demanding actual human work for actual human kids. I have so much hope for the future. The kids are alright.

Just sprained my eyeballs from rolling them so hard.

Robert Eggers is set to direct a new film adaptation of ‘ROMEO AND JULIET’. The film will feature the actors speaking in Olde English. (Source: www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie...)

I saw Spin Doctors, Blues Traveler, and Gin Blossoms a couple of nights ago, and at one point Chris Barron said how ridiculous it seemed that any of them were doing adult things 35 years ago. I agreed wholeheartedly. Also, for a bunch of old folks, we were a great-looking crowd, too.

anyway it is actually very fun to have kids deeply interested in the world around them and the people who live in it

Hey, easy there, hoss, I think it's safe to say the people of Kentucky haven't been properly represented in decades, and not just due to this geezer. Let's just get some perspective, is all.

The Tennessee Holler @thetnholler.bsky.social

Safe to say the people of Kentucky are not being represented properly

Oh wow, this sorts for me and my daughter as well, for both Civil Rights Acts. And the Bay of Pigs. And the Beach Boys "Pet Sounds" album. And SPARTACUS. I need to lie down.

John Downes-Angus@johndownesangus.bsky.social

So my 3 year old daughter’s birth date was farther from 9/11/01 than my own birth date was from the passage of the Civil Rights Act

Reacher: Judging by the gray in your beard, I'd say you still have fond memories of MySpace. Me: Now listen, this doesn't have to-- Reacher: It's possible you even remember your ICQ handle.

the babahuck@tylerhuckabee.bsky.social

me: hey, aren't you jack reacher? reacher: poster. mid-tier, by the look of it. you were on twitter until it became x. now you're just on one of the knockoffs, most likely bluesky, because you don't have the self-confidence for instagram or tiktok. me: ok t— reacher: peaked in the buzzfeed era.

Don't make me tap the sign again. *taps sign* The Sign: No instructional method is a panacea. I don't hunt werewolves, I teach high school, so stop trying to sell me silver bullets.

Nick Covington@covingtonedu.bsky.social

It's not enough for a movement to just say "Look, explicit instruction is important to understand and have in your toolkit" (Which it is! I'm not anti-instruction!), a movement needs a bogeyman to align itself and its followers *against*.

This is the most wonderful thing I've seen today.

THREAD. A while ago my parents' cat Bridget went missing. As the worrying weeks dragged on my dad devised a way to distract himself: he began to paint Bridget's adventures, imagining her travelling through time & inhabiting art's most iconic scenes. What he produced (& how quickly) was phenomenal...

I came downtown tonight to investigate the house music, um, festival in the local park from the cover of the bar across the street. There is in fact very loud, bass-driven music playing for the three people in the park, while Janis Joplin is on the bar's speakers. Gotta love the can-do attitude.

Actual LOL

[James Stewart as Odysseus] now listen here, Agamemnon, I'm going home, y'see. You keep your fancy armour, I'm getting off this crummy ol' beach. [Spotting the Cyclops] now here's a curious fella, he's only got one peeper

Was probably, and might well still be, a Tiresome Literature Boy. And listen, it's just rude to come at me about the craft beer.

Faine Greenwood@faineg.com

yes, the Tiresome Literature Boy could be exhausting at parties when he tried book mogging you while looking down his nose at you over his bottle of Vermont craft beer but you could feel reasonably confident he wasn’t going to unhinge his jaw and attempt to devour you in the name of proteinmaxxing

I believe my grandmothers (however many "greats" as needed) had shotguns for these situations.

Phenomenal thread🧵: (And this is a lady who knows a thing or three about epics in translation and adaptation)

Maria Dahvana Headley @mariadahvana.bsky.social

Thing about working with famous epics is that they're famous epics for a reason. Tons of people have had opinions about them for millennia. If you're going to work with one, you know your version is going to piss some people off. Even a *sedate* famous epic inflames some of its audience.
