Wow, this is beautifully done. Encourage library & archive folks to take 20 minutes to explore this story and learn more about Indigenous cultural heritage—there's a lot here that's new to me! 📚

Travel across North America learn how the efforts of a new generation of digital librarians are returning indigenous knowledge to its rightful stewards. See The Map That Roared and much more in this digital story from LF intern Thomas Gagnon-van Leeuwen. www.libraryfutures.net/post/indigen...

IGNORE THEM

Rafa Sales Ross@rafiews.com

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

When I try to explain to non-nerds how much our internet civilization depends on a few random smart people who maintain code libraries I wind up standing on chairs and yelling.

Charlie Warzel@cwarzel.bsky.social

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

Yay! This is going to be amazing!

Hey, it’s the official release day for Seeing Like a Supply Chain! And of course I’m swamped with grading and lesson-planning, but maybe I can say a little about the book and the process of researching it. yalebooks.yale.edu/book/9780300...

Can confirm. I also think I have some sand in my ears after a walk this morning.

The thing that Didion didn't tell you about the Santa Anas is that it's as if nature took a carpet cleaner to your face and used it to suck out every drop of moisture in your body.

In case you missed it last night: we are seeing reports all over the country of immigration surges and state violence. If you need whistles for your community, we will send you 100-3000 3d printed for free, and we will love doing it. 3dwhistles.com

I love this as an example for how to end something that's sprawling, complex, and beloved. Thoughtful stewardship of the digital materials, and celebrating what this organization did with a sense of pride and accomplishment, without any shame of the "if it's not forever it's a failure" trap. 💖

Make stuff. Do your hobbies. Geek out with your weird friends. Practice arts and crafts. Every society that ever burned to the ground left behind only the handicrafts, and every society saved from the brink was saved only by arts. Do not give up the joy of creating.

Librarians are also very good at helping you obtain articles for free. Just ask them!

David Shiffman, Ph.D. 🦈@whysharksmatter.bsky.social

Have you ever tried to read a scientific journal article and been told “you don’t have access, pay to download this article?” Did you know that the author of that article gets $0 if you pay? Instead, you can email the author and ask for a free copy! I’d be delighted to help and answer questions!

If that two-minute clip is a representative sample, two hours of that Elizabeth Holmes doc is going to be a LOT in one sitting. Maybe theater owners can plan on intermissions with therapy dogs?

Three library folks always worth listening to.

All of this. As the granddaughter of a 5th grade dropout and factory worker who managed to earn a PhD without mortgaging my future…I don’t know if my type of journey is even possible anymore.

Fascinating and sad. Tech capital enables the type of self-actualization and cultural knowledge for elites at the very same time as it destroys the possibility of achieving any of that for the masses. www.wsj.com/business/spa...

Ain’t that the truth.

This is partly an LLM problem and partly an organizational problem. The LLM makes life much, much easier for everyone who wants to just pretend, and much, much harder for everyone who doesn’t.

Dr. Cottom is correct. I’m in my 50s and at no point was Wikipedia considered “slop” in higher ed. Admittedly I was at a place (U of Illinois) with a strong cs program and good library school. But Wikipedia was considered in context of the human community around it.

Tressie McMillan Cottom@tressiemcphd.bsky.social

This is not what slop refers to. I'm not being purely academic about this. The conflation does matter. Because this is a type of conglation that people do to make any reasonable critique of "A.I." seem overwrought. "Oh they said the same thing about the internet!" And it is not true.

Occasional reminder that Muslims were among the 1st responders, among those killed, & among those sent to fight our forever wars. That there could be any kind of ~criticism~ of NYC's Muslim mayor attending Fri's ceremony is grossest bigotry & dehumanization. It's a disgrace that reflects on us all.

Anjali Dayal@anjalikdayal.bsky.social

This is somehow still going, and it’s not just a few random families now; it’s also a former mayor of NYC and governor of New York. There is, again, no way to reason to argue Mamdani shouldn’t attend this commemoration that isn’t fundamentally bigoted

I spent a week with my mom earlier this month right after the elections. She is a dedicated MSNBC viewer and I can count on one hand the pundit rants that were *not* about Hasan Piker that entire week.

Radley Balko@radleybalko.bsky.social

It’s mind-blowing that we have literal white nationalists in the White House carrying out unfathomably cruel, abusive, white nationalist policies, and the punditariat has spent the last two weeks debating if some people were too intemperate after a Black man was murdered by cops six years ago.

Reporting from the greater Montclair area…it’s been 100 degrees with dusty winds every day this week and it might be best to just let the lager larceny slide.

Parton ("9 to 5," 1980) provides a more trenchant critique of capital than does Marx ("Das Kapital," 1867) because as a researcher, Parton correctly frames the problem of capital as exacerbating but not supplanting other pre-existing human dynamics such as gender roles. In this essay, I will

NEW: For the second day, the Census Bureau's homepage, census.gov, features an unauthored report with analysis that @npr.org found was conducted not by career civil servants, but a team that included individuals affiliated with a President Trump-aligned think tank, the America First Policy Institute

npr.orgExperts raise alarms over Census Bureau report Trump is touting on noncitizen votingA Trump-aligned think tank has ties to a highly unusual Census Bureau report that the president is using to renew false claims of widespread voting by non-U.S. citizens in 2020, NPR has learned.

I spend a decent amount of my time reading Census Bureau documentation 🤓 and this does not read like Census Bureau work.

Catherine Rampell@crampell.bsky.social

Census issued a "study" claiming that 24,000 noncitizens voted in 2020. Unlike every other Census research publication, it was unsigned. Some other more subtle things missing too, like error bars (is 24k statistically different from 0?). If you have info about this study, please reach out.

It would have been great if the 404 piece included a conversation with just ONE librarian. In the meantime, it might be a good time to remind folks (or see for the first time) what consortial shared print agreements look like among libraries.

Which is just to say, what Amazon is doing is disturbing and of a piece with the AI plagiarism machine model. But it’s not a new threat to “rare” books. Library workers have been addressing this kind of issue for years. Support your library!
