This might be the πŸŽƒ Halloween spirit getting to me BUT... I wrote a development fairy tale about a writer, her trusty robot sidekick, and the dreaded "ick monster" that will haunt your dreams and make you want to refactor your entire website at 3am... 🧡 (1/3) (Link at the end)

step away from the tutorials and the pre-made prompts build something with real users and data you can't lose. you'll hit the boundaries yourself, and that teaches you more than anything else

5 things i'm carrying forward after building a real app with AI agents: judgment matters more. set context boundaries. pick the right model. design needs taste. "make it cozy and trustworthy" beats "make it pretty"

i'm not a designer so i build everything functional first, then make it pretty "make it pretty" gives you generic. define what you want and the tools work better. that's taste

If you thought your job as developer was to just write code you were doing it wrong. Code was NEVER the objective. It was always a tool to solve problems: for yourself or other people. Be obsessed with solving problems no matter what tool you have and you’ll be okay.

Now that doesn’t mean you can’t bring a little whimsy and have fun since you know how to code. The only difference is now more people get to do that since AI can lower the difficulty layer to building stuff. So I repeat: Code was never the objective.

when you're building something new there's no documentation to lean on AI doesn't remove your responsibility for the decisions. if anything it makes it matter more

the @bot quota went FAST 😭 two things helped, I asked Dorothea to keep the bots' chatter terse, and @poteto (one of the Grok bot devs) pointed out that routines can eat your tokens. bots LOVE making routines so I keep an eye on them 5/6

Lately @bot improved and I noticed the quota is going by slower than before even doing the same amount of work so yay! I also hit the limit on my CloudAgent quota so I had to deploy alternative coding routes, but that’s a story for another time πŸ˜‰ 6/6

I built 6 bots: Dorothea (chief of staff), Em (eng manager), Dottie (dev), Queenie (QA), Francis (CMO), and Iggy (infra) and yeah they all start with the first letter of what they do, I have a problem πŸ˜‚ 3/6

in about 6 hours on just My Yarn Stash we shipped CSV + Ravelry import, an undo-import flow, migrated prod from Heroku to @FastAPIcloud, set auth custom domain @auth0, and updated all the docs the Ravelry/CSV import is the big one since users kept asking for it 4/6

the real reason an AI deleted my database? i got comfortable and stopped questioning what it suggested. the tool didn't change, i did

i don't use the same AI model for everything boring well-defined tasks go to copilot as issues. lighter model for quick iterations, heavier one when precision matters more than speed

"what should i use?" is too vague to ask an AI i gave it all my constraints instead and it turned into a real trade-off conversation, the kind you'd have with a colleague

some of my stack wasn't up for debate. auth0, fastapi, minimal js and css, i already knew what i wanted handing those to AI would've just added noise. it's not all-or-nothing

every important decision goes into a markdown file next to the code, in my own words it forced me to understand how my own app worked. and more importantly, AI can go back to it too #coding #ai #buildinpublic #aiagents

one chat per feature. billing in one, AI extraction in another, launch strategy in its own it's not about being tidy. everything in one chat and it gets slow, confused, and starts burning tokens re-summarizing #coding #ai #buildinpublic #aiagents

i didn't need a smarter model i wrote three lines into my copilot instructions and nothing has tried to delete a database since 🌱 the full story of how i got there is on my channel πŸ‘‡ youtu.be/5MX3sMo8H-Q #coding #ai #buildinpublic #aiagents

technically the AI did nothing wrong it did exactly what made sense if you assume a database is disposable. nobody had told it otherwise πŸ‘€ the whole breakdown is on my channel πŸ‘‡Β youtu.be/5MX3sMo8H-Q #coding #ai #buildinpublic #aiagents

Not me having to silence Dorothea while I work because she keeps pinging me to sign off and merge stuff. Having #GrokBot running things on my personal projects while I work is kinda funny πŸ˜† #ai #devtools

New video is out! πŸŽ‰ so I installed #GrokBot last friday night and then had the most productive saturday I've had all year πŸ˜… built a lil squad of 6 bots and somehow closed 17 issues and merged 11 PRs in just one project in about 6 hours πŸ‘€ link to the video in the next one, come say hi ☺️

My first app I ever released was meant as an #ACNH companion to help keep track of the collectibles. The first icon was a green square cuz I clearly can’t develop an icon myself. But yesterday it all changed! I had Grok Bot create an actual icon and now it is live!!! #buildinpublic
