I keep seeing people say they want to know they are interacting with a human, and not a bot, ignoring that some of the biggest disinfo spreaders and trolls online are consistently operating under their own real names

The blue check thing is about clout chasing and totally antithetical to the open web. Just because an identity can be "verified" doesn't mean the account can be _trusted_, but the two are often conflated when you start adding those indicators.

I was washing my hands at the kitchen sink, suddenly got dizzy, and that's when I realized I'd been holding my breath for no reason! I was thinking too hard and forgot to breathe! So this is your reminder to take a few big slow deep breaths right now. And try not to forget to breathe.

Santa surprised me, a 41 year old woman, with my one and only Christmas gift this year. Santa's also the only one who includes my middle name when addressing mail to me, aside from my folks.

This is a WONDERFUL thread explaining alt text and why it's important!

Tyler, from the Internet (Haunted)@tylerfromtheinternet.com

Hi! You're seeing this because someone noticed you posting an image that doesn't contain alt text. This is not a scolding! You are loved! But everyone needs to be convinced using alt text is socially mandatory. (I sure had to be shown the way as well!) Would you mind reading this🧡 about it and why?

The time between the moment I decide "I'm going to get in the shower now" and the time I actually get in the shower is always 40-90 minutes somehow. Can someone explain this? A time scientist?

One good thing about today was learning that, despite living in the quagmire of violence we call America, I was not the only one who assumed the Cybertruck in front of the Trump hotel just spontaneously combusted. Took hours and a nap for it to occur to me that it could have been an intentional act.

Sarah Marshall said "People who have good personalities in their 30s, often have at least annoying personalities in their early 20s." and I actually yelped in pain because she didn't have to come at me that hard

NEW EPISODE! And we blamed it on the Santa Annas; we don't even know who the Santa Annas are! In which we embark upon an Ephron Christmas and spend a day with our kind of people by way of watching Mixed Nuts.

If there weren't such a widespread culture among new arrivals of automatic followback and follow farming, those "bots" would not exist. (The scammers would, because they're eternal, but they wouldn't be so prominent.)

If you are going to clutch your fucking pearls at my native fucking dialect's fucking linguistic fucking intensifier, fuck the fuck on off until you can't fuck any further, then dig deep for an extra helping of personal fucking grit and fuck the fuck on off a little fucking more.

What's not to get? This year, Mondays feel like Thursdays, Tuesdays feel like Wednesdays, Wednesdays feel like Tuesdays, Thursdays feel like Fridays, and Fridays feel either like Mondays or like their own detached new kind of day. Does everyone not now experience reality this way?

If you're like "everything sucks, I wanna do something", material support really does something

borderless@borderless.bsky.social

Fuck it. Trans folks need MATERIAL SUPPORT. @distributeaid.org is launching an HRT Harm Reduction Toolkit that provides 1 year of medical supplies needed to take injection-based HRT. We were planning to go live in January, but I'm not waiting. Fund the kits here: distributeaid.org/hrt-harm-red...

Moderation is hard. It would be impossible and unfair to ask mods to chase every username all over the Internet. However, when someone is famously engaged in a large public project to drive trans folks out of existence? For years? Bringing their vicious followers with them wherever they go?

Bluesky Safety@safety.bsky.app

Our growing moderation team needs clear evidence and well-defined rules to make decisions that can be consistently enforced, so they action accounts based primarily on content and behavior that appears in our app, where the context and authenticity can be directly verified.

This isn't the public square, it's a private establishment, and it's okay to go hey! You're the guy whose gang goes around beating and trying to kill people, we're not going to serve you here. Get out.

I was planning to sit out the current round of tech-criticism internet drama. But I always read @caseynewton.bsky.social, and I think he misses a key point about market power and the purpose of tech criticism. TL;DR: we shouldn't grade the tech barons on a curve. open.substack.com/pub/davekarp...

I told my boss last week I'd be phoning it in for the rest of the year and she laughed and then realized I was being serious
