an AI story… #AcademicSky I was playing around with Gemini, the AI program that my university has partnered with, for the first time a couple of days ago, and decided to call it up while in a Google doc working paper I’d written with a colleague recently. 1/6

Gemini: Oh, I have access to all of your information on the university's Google application suite, including all documents on Drive as well as your university email. I found the information about the Substack piece in several email exchanges you had with your co-author earlier this year. 5/6

Gemini responded after a few seconds with a few possible lines of future development (nothing earth-shattering), and then said it would be happy to draft a concept proposal. It also offered to draft a shorter version for the Substack article that I and my co-author were planning to write. 3/6

And then the “conversation" went something like this: Jeff: That would all be great, but I have a question. How did you know about the Substack version of the piece? That’s not mentioned anywhere in the working paper. 4/6

I first asked it to summarize the paper, which it did in about 10 seconds. Then I asked it if it had any suggestions about how to develop one of the arguments made toward the end of the paper. 2/6

Fascists are fragile. They depend on hierarchy in a world where hierarchy makes you vulnerable. Important to remember that a win yesterday is not a loss for all time.

It's not just that Orbán losing inspires hope in other competitive-autocratic countries ruled by right-wing nationalist authoritarians. It's that his loss materially changes things in those other countries, because he's been operating as a headquarters and funding source...

Orbán's electoral crushing is a far greater achievement than most people outside Hungary realise. He systemically consolidated power for 16 years, fixed the electoral map, abused govt power for political purposes & censored media. The hurdles that Hungarians overcame for this moment were immense.

It’s so hard to parse my feelings for this country when we do something so fundamentally awe-inspiring on the same day SCOTUS heard a case questioning birthright and Trump’s gonna go on tv tonight & talk gibberish about our needless war against Iran. Our best and our worst chaotically intertwining.

BREAKING: Artemis II lifts off on mission around the moon. nbcnews.app.link/KbL7XEKxZ1b

Watching the Artemis II launch. It’s like the last couple of years didn’t reach NASA yet. A woman overseeing the launch from the ground. A black man, and woman, and a Canadian on the crew. A blast from the recent past. Fingers crossed it goes well. And there’s every reason to believe it will.

Homan: "I begged for the last two months on TV for the rhetoric to stop. I said in March -- if the rhetoric doesn't stop, there is gonna be bloodshed. And there has been. I wish I wasn't right. I don't want to see anybody die."

If there's a "Top Five Most Annoying Things University Colleagues Do", this is surely on it: "Course assignment: Interview an expert at [your university] about the topic you have chosen to research." Sigh... It's enough of a challenge to stay above water up with our own students #AcademicSky

It’s time for UEFA and CONMEBOL to start discussing a joint boycott of the 2026 World Cup

Andrea Junker@strandjunker.com

Is it a good idea to host a major event like the FIFA World Cup in a country whose secret state police hunt down innocent people, lock them in cages, or execute them in the street?

European Union preparing sanctions on US companies if President Trump rejects EU proposal to deploy European military force to Greenland as an alternative to US control.-Telegraph

I've been teaching contemporary politics for nearly 40 years (Emory, Brown, now Georgetown) and *never* experienced anything even remotely like the inflection point Lepore describes. Hard to describe this as anything other than pandering to the self-appointed critics of universities.

question for #AcademicSky -- received an AI subsidiary aggregation addendum from my publisher for a book that came out some years ago. Are you signing these kinds of agreements? I'm inclined to reject the request, but have no feel for the consequences/implications either way.

People be like "it's an authoritarian police state but with dopes", and the subtext I'm getting is "authoritarians get misremembered as non-dopes". Like... no, my friend, authoritarianism is just what you get when impulse-driven doinks run the show. It wasn't called "Triumph of the Smarts".

Pritzker: "When did we become a country where it's ok for the US president to insist on national television that a state should call him to beg for anything? Especially something we don't want. Have we truly lost all sense of sanity in this nation that we treat this as normal?"

it's pretty frustrating how republicans can just spew endless lies about city life with zero repercussions but the moment a dem disparages a pickup truck it's open season

Received this today. When I listened to it, I discovered to my horror that AI was attributing the arguments of the book's author to me, the book reviewer. I informed Academia that they might want to reconsider this new service for subscribers if they want to keep their subscribers. #AcademicSky
