In the American tradition of the Masked Battle of Lexington & Concord, Shay's Masked Rebellion and Hooded Normandy.

Christopher Webb@cwebbonline.com

Patriot Front came out of their moms’ basements, dusted off the Old Navy khakis, put on the white masks so they don’t get fired from their day jobs, and headed to Washington for America’s 250th birthday celebration. Four hundred self-described patriots, not one ounce of bravery.

Look at this photo. Look at it. Am in Maine, not DC today. But we should all ride with this young woman forever.

It was an honor to have my reflection included in this zine declaring political hope amid a time of dissolution and laying-bare. Thank you @linasrivastava.bsky.social. Here's to keeping honest and keeping at it.

Proud to release "The Truths We Hold," the latest issue in our political hope zine series We asked creators and advocates to address the US's 250th with the question: How are you creating hope now? Please read, share, and join us in imagining the next www.transformationalchange.co/news-stories...

The specifics of this are extremely bad. DHS is using a tariffs/product importation law to demand Meta unmask the identity of an Instagram account that posts about ICE enforcement actions. The page sells no merch. Lawyers call it "wildly outside the scope" of the law www.404media.co/dhs-tries-to...

404media.coDHS Tries To Unmask Ice Spotting Instagram Account by Claiming It Imports MerchandiseThere is no evidence the Instagram and Facebook account, called Montcowatch, sells anything. Lawyers from the ACLU say the move is "wildly outside the scope" of DHS' authority.

👀 When is research not exactly facts. When it's Silicon Valley.

1. We ( @jbakcoleman.bsky.social, @cailinmeister.bsky.social, @jevinwest.bsky.social, and I) have a new preprint up on the arXiv. There we explore how social media companies and other online information technology firms are able to manipulate scientific research about the effects of their products.

"Angry grief, combined with military policy, fueled the indiscriminate killing that ensued. That combination of policy and emotion, or policy and ideology, is what Lifton called an 'atrocity-producing situation.' 3/4

A short while earlier, a beloved older sergeant from the American unit had been killed by a booby trap. The company commander, Lifton learned, had then told the soldiers, “There are no innocent civilians in this area.” 2/4

New Yorkers

NYC: if you can get to Federal Plaza near the Brooklyn Bridge/City Hall subway stops, come support Brad Lander, the latest Dem politician to be manhandled/detained by ICE for no legal reason. Zohran Mamdani is there in support of his fellow mayoral candidate. NYT's darling Cuomo nowhere in sight.

I get so tired of all the ways pundits talk around Democrats’ real problem, which is so obvious that an entire industry exists to obfuscate it. They cannot describe, let alone attack, the real sources of injustice in this country because to do so would indict themselves and their donors.

The talk was packed with insight, and great points on frames and how "magical thinking" clouds AI discourse. Companies build empires behind "the glib of marketing," one person said. I wrote this last year about our problematic wish for robot companions: jedmiller.substack.com/p/faces-in-t...

You know how customer service bots and standard search engines like saying "Did you mean ...?" Too often the Google AI Overview still feels like that. No, I didn't. Please show me my results. "Operator... Operator..."

I don't usually post basic outrage posts, but the idea that the media is credibly talking about Trump "pushing" Putin to do anything is just ... *gestures wildly* *pounds bar* *McConaughey tears* ... really offensive.
