I feel rather sad for the fate of the casserole in @emmanewman.bsky.social's "After Atlas".

I would subscribe twice but as a man of modest means I must ask one if you lot to step up. They're stories worthy of your support. #sciencefiction
Our subscription drive is still going and is now 70 new subscribers short of its goal. We had hoped to reach that in time for our 20th anniversary issue in October so we could give everyone their raises as part of that celebration. It's going to be close. clarkesworldmagazine.com/subscribe/
And another character joins the cast of one of my WIPs.
I tend not to worry about a single "Skynet" technical singularity so much as a digital ecosystem in which emergent digital life forms who've slipped containment hunt each other as they compete for resources, mutating as they do in ways we can't anticipate. #writing

If Ukraine would just surrender we could get on with making business deals
Kushner on Ukraine: “President Putin's laid out his line of what he wants to achieve. If Ukraine, you know, wanted to withdraw to that line, then obviously, you know, we have the rest of the deal set up and put together. Ukraine right now does not want to do that.” Putin’s brain cell

My 7 stages of novel writing: 5K: This is flowing like lava & twice as HOT 15K: OK I know what this story is about 30K: I do not have enough story to fill this book 50K: Oh god what turgid crap 75K: I have too much story for this book 90K: Galloping to the end 100K: The end. No idea if good or shit
While I'm an attending member at #worldcon I am not in attendance this year. My apologies to those who were looking forward to my peculiar sense of whimsy. Next year at @montrealworldcon27.bsky.social .
On a completely unrelated note, #Reacher killed one of his assailants by crushing him between archive shelves like these in (I believe) the Philly Public Library. Is that reasonably possible? Asking for a friend. #librarians @orkneylibrary.bsky.social
In one of our archive strong rooms there is a shelf. The shelf does not contain the most exciting or interesting item in the archive but it does contain something amazing. Read this short thread to find out more. 🧵👇
Looks at @bookjockeyalex.bsky.social. I mean, there must be fail-safes because I can imagine being so distracted I wouldn't notice the shelves closing in on me until it was too late.
Of course if (as seems likely) the tooth was ripped from the mouth of a helpless victim and worn as a trophy by his/her thuggish assailant, the attendant craftsmanship might seem a tad less exciting.
“Archaeologists have identified a 6,500-year-old human tooth pendant in Serbia. The pendant, likely used as a necklace, demonstrates significant craftsmanship and provides new insights into Neolithic practices. This...is the only documented human tooth ornament from the Neolithic central Balkans.”
I confess, I saw a lot of oldest pubs claims (usually with a narrow qualifier) when last in London. Quite confusing .
I see @petebrownbeer.bsky.social has tackled the subject of the oldest pub in the UK. I really like the Aristotle reference and might even steal it as a penalty for using the term 'The British Isles'! Anyhow, I just also wanted to flag the work of @jpwarchaeology.bsky.social on the subject, plus ...
And then there were none. The lanternflies have quit the field, vanished from the vineyard. Three days now without a sighting. We remain watchful, lest this be but a lull in their onslaught, or harbinger of some new devilry.
The lanternfly population has spiked in the vineyard this last week. Just after harvest (fortunately), but I still have to clear the vines twice a day to keep the little vampires from damaging them.
Do you happen to know of any good books on interdimentional physics, @astrokatie.com?
