These bullshit argument remind me of when chuds argue that women have no place in IT, or whatever, ignoring that our profession was made by female computers and secretaries.

There's not a lot to say here, he's just wrong, past, present, and likely future wrong, in all dimensions, and all ways all the the time. It's not even interesting or funny just an old racist being wrong.

One of the earliest catalogued exact measure of a solar year was made by Al-Battani, some of the earliest works of what we currently understand as botany was written by Al-Dinawari, one of the earliest explanations of fever as a bodily defense was made by al-Razi. Arabs have contributed to science

The word "Algebra" comes from the word "Al-Jabr" an arabic word that likely means like "completion"? And it was developed by Persian natural philosopher Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi, in the Arabic Empire. Jābir ibn Ḥayyān developed the very earliest catalog of chemicals

I would only credit Trump one skill: he is very good at entertainment. He understands what makes good tv, in another life he could have been a gay tv producer. Instead he used it to make a spectacle of politics. Sasha sees this as brilliance because we often view our own skills as special and other

That didn’t happen when we had a more or less open border with Canada tho

tom-paine1737.bsky.social@tom-paine1737.bsky.social

If we had open borders, the amount of immigration would be completely destablizing. A state is a compact between people living in a defined geographical region, period.

My running theory is many are going with this because they secretly agree with the transphobes, but are too cowardly to admit it, so they stated doing the cowardly shit where they pretend to only do this to appeal to the center.

Ian Boudreau@ianboudreau.com

I think people intuitively understand that democratic candidates tossing trans kids to the wolves is not only morally repugnant but also politically ineffective, otherwise they wouldn't freak out every time someone said they weren't voting for a democrat who did this

“Your average voter is transphobic” your average voter doesn’t give a shit about trans issues one way or they other. It doesn’t move the needle. Don’t get me wrong wrong they’re not GOOD about trans issues, they just don’t care. They care about the price of gas, the cost of groceries and whether

I am about the youngest you can be and still remember the world before the rise of the world wide web, and guys it was so genuinely different. I can play a game with my friend who was stationed halfway across the world, and now lives in Alabama. I have friends on here I have never met.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

It is easy to see we're not going in the right direction in a lot of ways. Yes, all of these examples have counterpoints that even it out, but these things exist and they're beautiful. You are reading my words right now and, a person who doesn't know what I even look like, can tell you: you matter

I know more one way or the other about subgroups that I might have encountered only a few time. Access to information has never been greater. Fucking Wikipedia, Stack Overflow, Server Fault, thousands of unique wikis and communities full of awesome people doing awesome things.

I cannot stress this enough: update your systems, update your browser, change your passwords, get a password manager. Please for the love of god.

To all my friends wondering what PHP is, it’s basically this.

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

Don’t look at me, I’m off work, this is someone else’s ticket

Some major U.S. banks are finding AI agents inside customer accounts, logged in with the customers’ own credentials, Axios reports. Many banks can’t tell whether an agent is doing what its user asked or acting on its own, as “Black October” trends over a week of cybersecurity scares.

Ya under recommended action in my exit ticket I said “drink” anyone has a problem with it they can update every computer and tighten the network next time the internet blows up.

So… if you reuse your password a lot and frequent small cheap websites… or maintain any wikis or w Wordpress blog… um, you might want to change your passwords. We kinda just found out that someone left a backdoor vulnerability in the, uh, the em internet? Like all of it.

One of the biggest web vulnerabilities of my career just dropped, and people arguing in the comments that the fix came from something that was not born of a woman, and therefor lacks the spirit of the coder. It makes me want to walk off a pier.

There are a ton of legitimate reasons to dislike ai, it’s environmental impacts, its damage to the collective truth consensus, but there ARE use cases for LLMs and this is one of them. LLMs are becoming insanely good at finding vulnerabilities and patching them. And if something like Wikipedia is

BREAKING: Trump's head of FEMA just told states to prepare to handle disasters on their own. The Trump admin's disaster chief told state officials they must increase their financial reserves and emergency capabilities to handle most disasters on their own — without federal help.

If you didn't want to say "Mozart" because it sounds basic, why not go with Schubert, Debussy, Tchaikovsky, or hell, Wagner would at least be ON BRAND. Fuck you could even go with Handel, not "google and pick the literal third name you see when you write 'greatest composers of all time" Bach.

grok what would a smart guy say

I think the people who lived through the Indian Revolution (and the troubles that came after), the Road to Solidarity, and the end of South African Apartheid, would be incredibly surprised to find out that it was "non-violent".

Sandy Hendry@sandyhendry.bsky.social

Martin Luther King was much more successful than Malcolm X for example. Before that, there was no need for a bloody civil war in most countries that abolished slavery. Just votes. Independence can also be bloodless. Gandhi in India, Walesa in Poland, Mandela in South Africa. The list is long.

All of these things were marked by periods of incredible violence, including the civil rights movement that they lauded. Midwits like Sandy casually skim wiki articles and half remembered lies from grade school and think they understand the arch of history.

Social change is always marked by violence. Violence is part of the machine. Looking at a riot that gotten out of hand and tusk tusking about it while you sit on your ass, securely thousands of miles away is neither brave, insightful, or interesting. It's cowardice in a veneer of rationalism.

I was told that Republicans are more fiscally responsible, and are worried about the climbing national debt

Trump has a new scheme to bribe farmers in swing states with welfare checks of taxpayer money because fuel has gone up so much because of his war. But only money for them, not for anyone else in the country. No, we have to keep paying higher prices AND we pay Trump’s voters.

I thin taxing billionaires is silly too, and I would never do it in my political project. Kind of strange to try to get money out of ghosts anyway.

Most billionaire wealth isn't in yachts or jewelry — that's just a few percent of it. Most is productive business capital: companies that employ people, build things, and fund research. Tax that wealth and you're taxing the businesses that employ us all. Cato's Adam Michel explains.

… ya. That’s kind of the point. Those businesses should be taxed because it pays for things that make the world better.
