“This recent dump of papers on Tuesday destroyed the careers of early-career mathematicians. We've had whole research programs wiped out on Tuesday by their dump … they have all the mathematicians research programs in their training data” - Tristan Buckmaster on OpenAI solving unsolved math problems

Not the point of this (very worthwhile) thread, but "The Magyar government" always gives me a little giggle. It's like if we had to talk about the "America administration" because we'd elected Jonathan America president.

roterote aka Hunter CG@roterote.bsky.social

The Magyar government understands if they let up then Fidesz and Orban will regroup like the Brasilian Far Right did and can come right back in. So they have to move with intense endless purpose to cut out the cancer of Orban. Because five years is not much time to reverse it all & clock’s ticking.

As someone who has had a variety of very rewarding disagreements with "big" accounts, and who once got to enjoy several hundred people calling me evil courtesy of some Christofascist prick, Micah makes a good point. If you start saying shit *to somebody* it's vampire rules, you invited that in.

Micah@rincewind.run

that said, while I think having a large following means you are responsible for where you point the Eye of Sauron, it does not mean that people with a small following should be allowed to say whatever out of pocket shit they want to you and then play "I'm just a little birthday boy" if you respond

Ah, so just stealing $120m from schools and transit riders to.... shore up her right flank during the last two months of the campaign? "She said it wouldn't impact any existing transportation projects. She said it would cost about $120 million, which would come from surplus fair share tax revenue."

In addition to the (very good) points being made here, the numbers also support it. If 100 people stop paying for chatGPT openAI's revenue goes from $2083333974 that month to $2083333174. When the money they save goes to pay an independent artist that artist could go from making $3900 to $4700

It's not enough to be against AI, you need to be pro art. You need to be a champion of the art you love, you need to share that passion and joy, and do what you can to support the artists who make it, because it's not enough to hate AI, to hate what it's doing to art and media; you gotta love.

When Google strips all this away by harvesting an "answer" and displaying it at the top of the page, the bargain between Google and the open web breaks down. Google is extracting 100% of the value from the websites it summarizes, and giving nothing back in return. 7/

I knew this was true, but I assumed it'd remain subtext. It feels sort of moustache twirlingly evil to directly admit "we've done our best to slurp up all the knowledge so we can sell it back to you"

Denny Carter@dennycarter.bsky.social

They stole the internet’s knowledge and all the work that went into it and they want to sell it back to us for a fee. What a business model.

look trump can have his government sign any docs he wants; either the next democratic government throws all the corrupt motherfuckers in jail and seizes all their assets, or it's pointless anyway.

"History is written by the victor" implies the converse "The victor is whoever writes the accepted history" Good 🧵on the civil war here.

In addition to just being unthreatened I think they're domesticated into some of these risks. Had someone do a favor for me once bc of a long-term business relationship w/ family. Spent a week trying to find the scam since it rang so many alarms. If that's how people usually treat you though...

Dodo Theory: straight cis white men from nice families are the worst at threat assessment because they are subject to fewer threats than everybody else. They’re flightless island birds who are vulnerable to unexpected rats. Unfortunately, most US government intelligence specialists are dodos.

I had my own uncle (who lives in another state) tell me I shouldn't complain about the rate of housing growth in Brookline because "the people who live there" decided they didn't want it. Like where do you think I live bro?

National high speed rail would be so amazing, but we have to spend the money bombing Iran, setting the Middle East on fire, and tanking the global economy. Because national security terrorism Jesus something something.

Who first figured out that seasons are flipped in different hemispheres? Like did we have to wait for Eratosthenes to figure out the axial tilt thing? Or did some Polynesian sailors put it together 600 years before that?

Gotta catch yourself first. They're trying to skip the part where you have to find yourself and run it down. Unfortunately for them robot meat is no real substitute for the raw red vital stuff we're made of.

I’ve been asked if I would support Sen. Mullin as Noem’s replacement. The answer is a resounding NO. The rot in DHS is deep, much deeper than any individual. It’s a question of policy not personnel. The Senate should not consider any DHS Secretary nominee until DHS and ICE are reined in.

I've severely limited caffeine for medical reasons and it's amazing how little coffee I need to add to a cup of water to trick myself. I swear, I drink it and my brain goes "yeah, that's brown, must be coffee." I can do it all day, 5 'cups of coffee' at 80% water a cup.

Nosferatu (2024). I still want that 132 minutes back. It was nothing! it was all carefully arranged beautifully costumed nothing! It was like eating soup flavored soup and spending two hours trying to figure out what flavor it was supposed to be.

fun question: what’s the maddest you’ve ever been leaving a movie theater? not necessarily worst movie you’ve seen, but the one that just pissed you off the most. mine is Batman v Superman

"Where you stand with the keys and your cool hat of silence Where you grip her love like a drivers license" (best is too hard, but my favorite today)

I'm at their second benefit show right now. (They just opened their 3rd set with "American Idiot.) These white suburban parents are wearing t-shirts with slogans like "RADICALIZED BY BASIC HUMAN DECENCY" and "NO ONE IS ILLEGAL ON STOLEN LAND BUILT BY STOLEN HANDS." (4/?)

Stock go up because AI is going to replace all the workers is one of the goofiest bets that the whole market seems to be buying. Either it's wrong, AI isn't magic, that won't happen, stock values collapse. Or it's right, AI is magic, everyone gets fired, whole economy (incl. stock value) collapses

this particular line is maybe the best statement of purpose i have seen for those of us who want a more militant opposition to this administration

Liberal Currents@liberalcurrents.com

“Let us be clear: we want the power of the state. We wish to hold the criminals of the regime accountable. We wish to seize back the public funds looted by Trump and his cronies. We wish to undo the damage he has done to the government. More than any of that we wish to rebuild.”

Trump: I have made a new way to control the country Every previous admin: you fucked up a perfectly good consent manufacturing machine is what you did. look at it. it's got the PTA and Reddit mad at you.

Essential point here. The purpose of nonviolent direct action is to make visible, in incontrovertible fashion, the abuses and cruelties of the system.

it really is government by a bunch of bull connors. basically walking into traps set for them by their opposition. connor also did not understand that beating the hell out of demonstrators was *what they wanted*

Justice is an exceptionally strong motivator of human behavior. Even brutal and repressive regimes rely to some extent on it. Not by pursuing what I'd call justice, but trying to convince people what they do is just (the people we kill are traitors, or monsters, we do it to keep you safe, etc.) 1/7

I hope it doesn't get that far. I hope the Trump regime isn't foolish enough to let it get that far just to run cover for a couple of murderers. Or, since that seems unlikely, that MN successfully forces the issue. 6/7

In the long term it looks like Iran. People are willing to fight and die for it if they believe it's the only path to justice. They've done it many times before. In the US, short term, the risk is mob justice. For everyone's sake people need to know these murdering DHS goons face consequences. 4/7

Otherwise it's just a question of time. How many more people DHS needs to murder before the observers and protesters start thinking that a DHS agent walking away from the crime scene is the same as getting away with murder. How long until they decide they shouldn't let that agent walk away? 5/7

We see this effort with Renee Good and Alex Pretti. "She's a domestic terrorist" "he had a gun". The issue is, I don't think anyone but diehard Trumpists believe it. I don't believe it, the people of MN don't believe it, even places like NYT and CNN don't believe this one. 2/7

People feel the lack of justice. They demanded justice be returned. On some level, I think most people involved, even in the regime, realize that is unsustainable. If enough people believe that the courts and the investigators and the state itself can't or won't do the right thing it's bad. 3/7

Saying there must be trials isn't just an emotive aspiration. Congress can: - Create a new court (complying w/ 6A jury vicinage) - Give it jurisdiction over defined category of crimes - Also create dedicated prosecutors for the same - Strip SCOTUS of appellate jurisdiction It can be done.

I found Kropotkin aspirational, but devising political & social theories at a time when you think the "end scarcity" technology is arriving imminently lets you be real sloppy & impractical. You see it with early 20th c. Europeans, and with the AI crowd today (albeit w/ vastly different goals)
