A bustling high street is a bit like atmosphere in a restaurant. We all want it, but we're not going to jolly well pay for it, are we?

James Ball@jamesrball.com

The British syndrome, summarised: 78% of us say our high streets are important to us. But only 28% of us actually use their local high street even once a week – and only 53% of people said they used theirs *once a month*. We won't use it, and we won't lose it.

Dessert is great because it's about the pursuit not of fullness but completeness. Plus, you can share it! I mean, when was the last time you ordered soup with “two spoons, please”?

Not here to yuck anyone’s yum but gave up on Project Hail Mary because it’s bad writing. I keep wanting to like science fiction but maybe I just like… science and fiction?

Don’t consider it a sliding doors moment for my childhood because even Highgate boys weren’t watching in primary school but Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David’s *almost* decision to call Kramer ‘Kessler’ would’ve royally fucked up my SEO as an adult.

Incidentally my only other colleague on the Standard’s comment desk was a UCS boy so I used to observe that between us we ran the gamut of human experience.

While we’re on the subject, my mum (Ann Kessler) used to work in the same office as Gavin Esler’s sister, also called Ann, and that feels like a Seinfeld B-plot waiting to happen, no?

Whenever I want to call family/friends in New York but don’t want to wake them I have to Google “New Jersey time” otherwise you get the newspaper and I can’t be the only one who does this.

Plus, if you’re anything like me, and the issue gets resolved, it will make the experience feel even better than if the hotel had got it right first time, because you stood up for yourself and acted decisively.

Imagine being the richest person in the world whose companies: 1. Determine the outcomes of wars 2. The tenor of public debate 3. Fund political parties and *still* thinking, yes, it's the Jews who enjoy outsized influence. Antisemitism is one hell of a drug.
