For a hot minute there I had YouTube's algorithm serving me 15-second videos named stuff like "Mouse falls over" posted 17 years ago and that shit was THE SWEET SPOT

- Will sorrow ever visit me again? - NEVERMORE - Will God's mercy ever fail me? - NEVERMORE - Gosh, I feel better already. When my time on Earth is over, must I still be parted from my darling Lenore? - NEVERMORE - O, blesséd assurance! Praise Heaven for sending me this feathered comforter!

Keep the hoping machine running.

Trump and Co. will try to steal the midterms. They're already trying. Gerrymandering, bad faith lawsuits, voter intimidation, and a whole lot of lies. But they don't have a genius secret plan. They're already doing whatever they can think of. And it's beatable. Shouldn't have to, but here we are.

I haven't watched this since film school -- but even that was considerably less than 100+ years ago. Imagine watching it new. Imagine how disorienting those visuals must have been (don't have to build a tilting camera rig if the whole set is at a Dutch angle!), how the ending must have snapped.

The song I'm writing right now is a genuine fake Woody Guthrie song, and although I'm pretty happy with the lyrics and stoked to be singing about what's happening now, I know it's not going to be a lyric with a long shelf life. And I guess that's okay? They don't all have to be for the ages

Phil Ochs probably took the topicality approach to its extreme, calling himself "a singing newspaper." The problem, of course, is that the newspaper gets thrown away the next morning. You can listen to Dylan cold without needing footnotes; Phil, not so much.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, the monster is a metaphor for trauma, and you defeat the monster by processing your trauma, blah, blah blah, but in this case it is PRETTY GODDAM SATISFYING to see the protagonist do that thing

The creature doesn't even want to kill him, in the end -- it keeps trying to force him to his knees. It wants him to worship; it wants him to admit he's helpless. And he wins by not giving it what he wants.

GIVE HIM A MEDAL

An enormous fire all but destroyed an infamous Nazi-era guesthouse known as the Eagle’s Nest in southern Germany, according to the police, who said on Saturday that a man had been arrested in connection with the blaze.

Look, I have no time for "compassion fatigue" as a concept, but it's getting me grim about the mouth to be told, as a person with exactly 639 Bluesky followers, "You are our only hope." That's a lot to place on the shoulders of an audience smaller than a West End crowd for a Derren Brown matinee

Motherfuckers still out here saying "Go slow" like Langston Hughes didn't see through their bullshit 75 years ago

Actually, positive change is slow, difficult and incremental by nature. Destroying is fast, building is slow. It is easy to bring misery to people - any idiot can do it, as Trump shows - but very hard to improve their conditions. Building a better society is slow, careful, patient work.

Like Dr. King never wrote his letter from a Birmingham jail. All you weirdos on the margins, sit down and shut up until the power structure is damned good and ready to (maybe) give you (some of) what you want.

In 1990-91, I was 23 yeas old and temping as an assistant at a middle school library that had a little computer room at the back. Kids would spend EVERY LUNCH PERIOD playing Oregon Trail from 5.25" floppies. It was bananas.

Americans who went to school in the 90s: did you play Oregon Trail? Did EVERYONE play Oregon Trail? I keep seeing it come up and wonder if it was truly that prevalent

OH SHIIIIIIT Kevin Sorbo ad for Patriot Mobile comes on during the flick, touting its right-wing bona fides -- "defending the Second Amendment and the unborn." Younger Child pipes up, "You got the wrong movie, buddy -- 14/88 is next door" and the NOISE I just MADE

Anyway: Decent movie! They shot like five different endings, but I liked the ambiguous triumph of the theatrical end. It's almost an existential thing -- Enslin wins because Hell cannot hurt him more than he's already been hurt; no Devil could hate him as much as he hates himself.

I thought the short story was pretty thin gruel, but the movie both finds the human stakes and amps up the action with blood and thunder -- and a whole host of familiar Stephen King riffs. And Cusack acts up a storm.

What makes the whole thing almost tragic is a South Asian Hindu and self-styled principled conservative, Vivek had a real opportunity to lead -- to assert that bigots and Christian nationalists have no place the Republican party; but he chose to play footsie with them because they're the base

Now he's getting heckled from his right at his own campaign rallies, and he thinks his only way forward is appealing to different variety of bigotry, because as it turns out "principled conservatism" was a mirage all along

Neglected to mention: When this logo came up at the start of the movie and the lady in the frame turned toward the camera, D and I simultaneously blurted out words to the effect of "She's gonna roar!"

Creepshow Cinema Night #21: THE GHOST TRAIN (1941) Not a horror film per se, but a comic thriller. In the crudest marketing terms, it's THE LADY VANISHES meets A NIGHT AT THE OPERA, and it's a rip-roaring 1:22 of entertainment.

Creepshow Cinema Night #22: DEMENTIA 13 (1963) Filmed at Howth Castle and environs, a way a lone a last a loved a long the riverrun, past Eve and Adam's, from swerve of shore to bend of bay

The voiceovers were allegedly forced on FFC by Corman, but they work perfectly well and are not overdone. Luana Anders is terrific. The B&W cinematography is moody as hell. There are some really lovely compositions -- even in his raw state, Coppola had the eye.

Those are cut in with a ton of extreme close-ups, which make the whole picture feel claustrophobic and dank. They made everybody pay their own way to Ireland and then barely show us any of the countryside!

Corman asked Coppola for a PSYCHO knockoff, and he got it, right down to the false-protagonist structure -- though the ending is more like HALLOWEEN. This is Coppola's own 69-minute cut, without the additional kills or the psychiatrist prologue. Tight and clean, if slightly elliptical.

I've been shilling my Halloween mixtapes pretty heavily -- and will do so again -- but I've also got some seasonally appropriate music of my own. Some years ago I recorded a spookity cover of Dr. John's enduring voodoo hymn "I Walk on Gilded Splinters" of which I remain rather proud
