GitHub just finished ripping styled-components out of github.com. Result: 55% less time to server-render a page, 25% faster component init. CSS-in-JS makes you pay for styles twice: collecting them on the server, running JS on the client. Static CSS is *always* more efficient. Ship CSS.
GitHub.com has fully moved off CSS-in-JS to CSS Modules, resulting in 55% less server-side render time and 25% faster component init. https://github.blog/engineering/architecture-optimization/improving-site-performance-by-shipping-more-css/

I remember a conference after party a decade+ ago where @johnresig.com was stood in the corner on his own because everyone (including me) was too shy to speak to him. Fwiw, if you ever want to talk to me at one of these things, please just do it. I'm also shy.

Yep. If code was never the hard part, software wouldn’t be so goddamn buggy and broken. If “code” only ever meant thoughtlessly churning out the next endpoint, you missed the point entirely. blog.senko.net/code-was-nev...

Technology, like time, cannot be stopped in it's relentless march forward. Much as us old timers would like to slow down one or the other just a little bit… In light of that, Chrome 153 will come with an updated list of modern devices for emulation mode—with nice categorisation—thanks to @jackf.io

In my audits, reading the Performance profile is where people get stuck: the flame chart and waterfall look like noise at first I built an interactive guide to make them click, every figure is interactive, plus LCP, CLS, INP and the Insights panel perf.reviews/profile-guide #WebPerf #DevTools

Great piece, well worth reading, a teaser: "There's what modern software is actually capable of, and then there's the gargantuan pile of 'AI' hype, fraud, and bullshit ... hucksters lying to your face about the imminent arrival of omniscient, sentient, paradigm-rattling supercomputers."
we are quickly approaching the pinnacle of AI bullshit mountain

Less is more, more or less. AI makes it easier than ever to add more, and faster. It’s tempting. But we might end up building things that don’t need to be built quantity over quality. Clarity will be hard to achieve. It doesn’t happen by accident.
Blogged about AI, loop engineering, token cost and motivation when giving AI advice. AI loops: who pays for the tokens? www.jackfranklin.co.uk/blog/who-pay...

The company that used the books I co-wrote to train its model without permission is weeping that China "brazenly" and "illicitly" extracted its Claude AI model's capabilities. I'm sending snorts and stares. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
Huge +1. I spoke about this at a conference last week; be aware of folks who don't pay for tokens (like me in my day job, but I pay for my personal Claude usage!) telling you how great huge, multi hour loops are.
While his framing is a bit cynical, I share similar irritation with Ed Zitron on AI companies pushing loops. Loops where Claude or OpenClaw keep trying to solve a task until successful are essentially a token burning workaround to deal with the fact they don't get the answer correctly on first try.
This is me! We're focusing on a few areas next month and I'm leading the "Paper cuts" area. So spam me with your bugs, please - and please file them yourselves first so I can triage them internally 😁
The Chrome DevTools team are doing a "papercuts" sprint where they try to address lots of small, irritating bugs and annoyances. Reply with crbug.com links (no bug, no fix—that's the deal!) and will see what we can do. No promises though as some may be features/too big/unclear how to solve.

Blogged! I wrote an ai-review skill & tool to let me review AI plans in the browser. I prefer working in the terminal but much prefer reviewing in a PR-style review UI. So I built it! www.jackfranklin.co.uk/blog/ai-revi...

Sneaking a giant screen into the flagshagger march is one of the funniest things @ledbydonkeys.org have ever done. "STAY HYDRATED" 😂🤣😂
