Lots of reasonable praise for MapQuest for adding this layer to their app. But I don't see anything about the organization that MapQuest is actually pulling the data from: @openstreetmap.bsky.social. OSM is a crucial tool for maintaining public access GIS data.

Big Brother is watching, but now we can watch Big Brother right back. I love that MapQuest is flipping the script. Apple Maps, where you at?!

The caloric content of some of those cheesecakes makes me seriously consider whether or not they classify as biological weapons.

journeyman folklorist@aniceburrito.bsky.social

Tangential to the Cheesecake Factory talk is that their workers are genuinely elite tier 1 operators in the food service industry. I have a friend who manages bars and restaurants and he will instantly hire anyone with Cheesecake Factory experience. They are like the Marines minus the war crimes

For the security community: Does someone have a MySQL or other database vulnerability to drop so we can complete LAMP bingo and give everyone in IT a day off?

It might be time to make a law or two to codify a standard embargo and put some actual teeth behind enforcing it. This trend of violating the embargo for publicity is absurd and should not be tolerated by the security community or the law.

kat cosgrove@kat.lol

I do not like Chainguard. You cannot get me to say a single positive thing about them as a company. Leaking a critical vulnerability in violation of an embargo is outrageous behavior even for them and they absolutely know better.

Woke maps does it again!

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) said that he doesn’t know “what my next chapter of life is” if Republicans lose the House in the November elections, in remarks that gave rise to speculation that he might retire from politics under that scenario.

I'm not even sure the LLM is the problem here. Sure, it's enabling a lot of people to just generate tonnes of unreviewable garbage, but unreviewable garbage isn't actually new in OSS. LLMs are just making it more prevalent.

I like seeing the dev of the SNES core on the Pocket actually telling one of these dudes off. Holy shit.

A PR of this size needs tests, docs, QA checking, and verification before it ever gets pushed to a maintainer. If this user had done any of that, they probably would have realized that this PR is shit. Also holy hell, 50k line diff in two commits. I'm not even sure this user can use Git correctly.

We replaced all of the career civil servants with literally your worst middle manager. And those middle managers are overseen by literally the oligarchy. This is going to increase fatigue and make the TSA workers much less amenable. And I'm certain they know it too.

Stacey Burns@wentrogue.bsky.social

Removing chairs for staff who have to stand for long hours in the workplace has also been a tactic at Seward Coop and the Walker Art Center, so this sadistic worker-unfriendly policy is not limited to MAGA (But what’s next, testosterone tests for TSA staff checking your ID?)

What, Stanford couldn't find a single black student or even a random member of the public to pose for the photo? I expected this of Harvard or even MIT, but Stanford? I'm frankly suprised only one of the "students" was AI.

My latest video about medical supplies — which features absolutely no firearms and contains no links to any firearms and doesn't even mention firearms — has been removed from YouTube for violating their firearms policy.

The cures for society's ills will be means-tested and minimized as to be directed to those determined most worthy by philanthropists and charity. The system thrives on its own inequity so it makes sense that outsized wealth is the only thing that can truely set you free.

This coming from the same party who keeps arguing that every cop that murders an innocent person or abuses their wife is just a bad apple and not a sign of a systemic problem? Yes I know that both do it, but the Rs are far more ready and do it more often.

Marisa Kabas@marisakabas.bsky.social

New — I wrote about this weird thing where people within the Republican party keep being exposed as Nazis and the party then tries to claim each one is an aberration. The facts, as I lay out here, indicate otherwise:

Hahahhahahahahahaha tell me you know nothing of the gay rights movement while using a LOT more characters. Pride was a riot. Harvey Milk was assassinated. In history, no group has been simply granted a rights win, it had to be taken.

I wasn't able to get any work done today What's that? The LLM models were down? No that's not why. I was still affected by the ongoing exchange and sharepoint online incidents as well as other m365/entra issues.

You know, her father was a self-employed small business owner at the time. They likely were not able to access the kinds of care needed to handle—checks notes—Hodgkin's Lymphoma in 1975-76. And as for her mother, I can almost guarantee lost access to health care played a part in her passing.

these people booing sound like literal sheep as Darline Graham criticizes Dr. Annie Andrews for supporting "government-run healthcare" before bragging of her parents that "if they were sick, they had to get up and go to work...my mother passed away when I was 11 and my father just over a year later"

Darline Graham actively campaigning against a policy that would have helped alleviate the pain her own family went through is really something. I wonder if she thinks that it wouldn't be "fair" for families in SC to not have to deal with the same struggles she dealt with.

@tomscott.com you will absolutely get YouTube comments about this when Ep 23 goes live on YT but that "basically a gaming console" is a Steam Deck and its been wonderful for all sorts of research projects and other uses. I use mine as a mobile network pentest suite among other things

I would have loved for the deck to have been on the market when I was working on the NASA robotics team at my college. We had to move our rover simulator with the arrow keys on a laptop...

Speaking of that project. I need to start watching the published papers again to see if any of our Lidar work gets cited because we were using lidar scanners for some of the stuff Airbus was using stereo cameras for in this last episode.

When you are testing things that need to drive, especially autonomously or remotely, it's often cheaper to use off-the shelf hardware like Xbox controllers than to build a bespoke solution. The steam deck cuts out the PC middle-man that's often includes by just being a Linux box with joysticks.

Hey Twitch? Maybe, just a thought here, if you want streamers to come to your hellscape of a convention at which streamers routinely get assaulted, injured and stalked, make it so they don't need a payment plan for the privilege.

Hey map nerds. Please choose better colors. In this map the primary issue is "Lean D" is far too close to "no election"—the background color—for people who are colorblind to be able to easily digest the information. I would suggest texturing the no election states with hash marks or something.

Before the tariffs, I could get a burrito for less than 10 bucks from my local Spanish food shop and grocery store. After the Cyclosploria outbreak, I can't even get a burrito for less than 15, and I'm rolling the dice on whether or not it's going to stay in my stomach or fly out the other end.

derek guy@dieworkwear.bsky.social

i find that burritos are cheaper in mexican communities, particularly ones with large immigrant populations. if you lower tariffs on the inputs — such as rice, tomatoes, and avocado — and allow mexican immigrants to own and run their own businesses here, seems like you can get pretty cheap burritos

My taxes pay for a social security system it is rapidly looking like I will never be able to draw on. My taxes pay for M1 Abrams I will never be able to drive. They pay the salaries of congressional representatives that don't even give me the time of day. I would prefer a grocery store.

Opinion: Mamdani's idea may sound appealing, but it's NYC taxpayers who will take the hit, subsidizing discounts they may never even use.

It'll also be a very good thing to remind the Democratic Party why it is so often said that the southern black vote is the base of the party. Governor's mansions and state senate seats across the south are also up for grabs if this momentum continues.

Christopher Webb@cwebbonline.com

STAY TUNED ON THIS Republicans may have poked the bear. They used gerrymandering to weaken Black voting power. Instead, new data suggests they helped drive higher Black voter turnout across parts of the South. 1/2

Tell me you understand nothing about data centers and the IT industry without telling me that. Data centers create maybe 10 local jobs. Construction is a travelling contract crew, most systems management is remote, the HVAC and technical stuff is also traveling contractors. Help desk is offshore

Hassett: "Data centers are very good for towns bc they create so many jobs & bring people in with high incomes that can buy houses & stuff like that. So if you take a sleepy town that hasn't seen much in the last 30 years & put a data center there, there are gonna be a bunch of happy residents."

A coffee shop creates more jobs. And it doesn't pollute the town with noise and hard water that must be run through the treatment systems.
