the building height increases will continue until NIMBY attitude improves

The Urbanist@theurbanist.org

A retrofit to build a new mass-timber addition above the Doyle Building at 2nd Avenue and Pine Street has added six floors since the Seattle Landmarks Board saw it last year. That change is only likely to intensify opposition. Story: www.theurbanist.org/downtown-hig...

Update: I was wrong, there will be a special council meeting on Monday to approve Saka's traffic safety bill and Bob Kettle will be putting forward an amendment to strip out the historic district provisions. Someone tipped off the preservation folks about this so they had more time to organize.

this meeting had 3 Rob Saka moments: 1. no one seconded a motion that a member made 2. someone got mad because someone else called the question on their discussion (Roberts Rules) 3. someone compared a safety measure to something awful Trump did

Gordon Padelford@gordonofseattle.bsky.social

It passed🥳! Here are the very reasonable street management principles the Pike Place Market Constituency adopted tonight. It would astounded normal Seattleites that this remains controversial, and that opponents said it was “similar to Trump’s efforts to tear down the East Wing of the White House” 🤯

given Seattle’s population of ~800,000, we’ll be paying around $695 per resident for policing just for one year (2027)

Amy Sundberg@amysundberg.bsky.social

We're looking at a chart that has 2025 police dept budgets/crime rates/size of force/etc, and what first jumps out to me is that since 2025, we've increased the SPD budget by $90 million. It's grown from $465 million in 2025 to $556 million proposed in 2027.

when I am walking past all the parked cars that for some reason are closer to the airport than the train station, I do NOT want to be honked at because a golf cart carrying three people wants to drive at 20 mph down the path

Jason@jrock08.bsky.social

The next port commissioners election I'm a single issue voter for removing the golf cart from the pedestrian path at seatac.

I emailed the Port about this a while ago. the only response I got was "Thank you so much for reaching out and making us aware of this. Your feedback will be shared with the appropriate party for review." I followed up several times and got no response. email them at SEACustomerCare@portseattle.org

roadie, two days. I had graduated college with a degree in computer science but hadn’t gotten an offer over several months. so I decided to try something new. I interviewed and the guy wanted to show me his warehouse and offered to pay me for work that very same day. I wasn’t busy so I said yes

This post is unavailable.

we set up a big stage and I drove his box truck with a long strap attached to a big piece of steel light rig frame to raise it up. the next day I was busy until the evening when I came back and helped them drive the light show for the concert and then tear it all down afterward

it was interesting and the people were fun to hang out with. I never asked about pay though and ultimately he paid me about $10/hour, so I ghosted him. a couple months later I got a tech job that paid around $43/hour not including benefits

anyone want to tour the Seattle Real Time Crime center? you know, the evil lair with all the cameras for spying on the city under the guise of fighting crime? hit me up

starting in a bit! feel free to come and go

the next Downtown Seattle Streets for All (DSSA) social will be at Ohana Belltown on Friday, October 16! we'll be meeting at 4-6 pm during their happy hour. we have some budget to spend so we can even order a couple appetizers for you!

Kettle made a big deal about this in a meeting with the Belltown Community Council last night. he’s holding budget office hours from 10 am - 12 pm at Uptown Espresso in Belltown if you want to share your thoughts with him!

Amy Sundberg@amysundberg.bsky.social

CM Kettle says this is an "unfunding" of public safety, which....seems like a real stretch given my earlier post that SPD's budget has grown by $90M in 2 years in a tough budget environment with huge deficits to handle.

Bob Kettle and I disagree on a lot but I’m always happy when people put aside politics and just work to get things done

Bob knows I actively campaigned for his opponent but I give him credit for working closely with me in areas of shared interest.

"It's interesting that the agency is considering a hotel built in 1973 an immutable obstacle. Motif last sold for $145 million in February 2018 ... It's possible the agency could save more buying the property and demolishing it than routing a $20 billion-plus project around it"

The City of Seattle is shutting down a cafe’s outdoor deck because the code says any outdoor dining must be 50’ away from a residential property due to noise concerns Funny, we shove all housing growth on the loudest roads our city has. I guess that noise is fine?

what a fantastic life they must have in order to complain about something as severely inconsequential as this

Ryan Packer@typewriteralley.bsky.social

The next speaker is recounting the immense burden of having to live next to a for-sale house that is being shown two times a week for an extended period of time.

these are valid parking spots that have previously been used by RVs. very likely the business next door ordered a bunch of these eco blocks to be placed here illegally. what should the city’s response be to this?

I'm already pretty well versed in the ways Musk is bad. but since the tech oligarchs who own Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and of course Twitter are refusing to sell ad space for this, maybe it's worth a watch...

great wonky thread. town homes are better than single family detached homes, but we have the potential to build so much more density more accessibly and more cheaply with single stair stacked flats and small international code compliant elevators

Michael Andersen@andersem.bsky.social

I have a confession to make. The townhomes I & others spent most of a decade trying to legalize are popping up all over Oregon & elsewhere...and I love that...but they're a problem in one big way. (get ready for a twisty thread about the housing report @sightline.org just published)

just…what are we doing? your tax dollars at work with Sound Parking

Doug Trumm@metropolitanglide.bsky.social

The 700-stall parking garage was the number one ST3 priority for the City of Renton. If ST stays in budget, the garage will cost $143,000 per stall.

I’m learning so much about campaign finance law just by following news about NIMBY organizations

Marc Auerbach@pugetopia.bsky.social

Is Sara Nelson violating campaign finance laws by using a (c)(4) nonprofit to fund a campaign against progressive Seattle Citu Council candidate Nilu Jenks?

Tree Action Seattle also had questionable behavior:

Ryan Packer@typewriteralley.bsky.social

Tree Action Seattle, a sponsored organization of the Seattle Parks Foundation - a 501(c)3 org - put up an Instagram post last night promoting candidates who had been endorsed by TreePAC. I do not believe that little disclaimer at the bottom is going to cut it here.

it’s back!
