Who gets named in science? 🔬🧬🔭🧪 Our study, led by @cam.ac.uk researchers, found that of 181 scientists named in UK school science specifications for ages 16–18, only THREE were women. Women have shaped science. It's time their contributions were recognised! 💜✨ #IncludeHer #WomenInSTEM

Did you know science stories we repeat, often omit women? 😬 #IncludeHer is developing workshops to counter these narratives ✨ 📘 curriculum-aligned + evidence-based 👩‍🏫 teacher professional dev options Follow us to stay tuned for more details! #InternationalDayOfWomenAndGirlsInScience #STEMEducation

Let's celebrate some scientists on the International Day of Women and Girls in Science! I decided to search Trove, the magnificent newspaper database of the National Library of Australia, to see what I found. I used 'woman scientist' as the search term. 🧪 #WomenInSTEM

Happy International Day of Women and Girls in Science! 🧬🪐🧑‍🔬✨ A huge shout out to all the #WomenInSTEM for being amazing every day of the year 💪 Learn about some the incredible women scientists and their work at includeher.au/resources

Researchers recently published a shocking statistic about the Australian education science curricula - a clear bias in the gender representation of scientists. @astronerdika.bsky.social writes about the importance of the @includeher.bsky.social movement. www.spaceaustralia.com/opinions/its... 🧪👩‍🔬

Research is truly collaborative, and our study was no different. Our team is from all around the country for various institutions and backgrounds. What we have in common? A passion for STEM and STEM education! 💜 #IncludeHer #WomenInSTEM

We studied high school STEM curricula to explore the representation of male & female scientists in these courses. We also checked if a name was mentioned because it's about the *person* (scientist) or if it's a law/idea *named after* the person (concept). The results vary dramatically!

ACT and VIC take a ‘concept’ approach, avoiding mentions of scientists where possible. Since many laws/methods were named after men due to historical reasons, this approach does not tell the full story and implicitly promotes the ‘lone-male genius’ narrative.

Meanwhile other states take a ‘concept and scientist’ approach, but they fail to mention the contributions of female scientists (e.g. notably, Marie Curie under the topic of radioactivity!) ☢️ If this approach is taken, curricula should also talk about female scientists and their contributions.

Out of the 145 scientists mentioned in the high school curricula we studied, only 1 female scientist was named. Rosalind Franklin. This is a problem, and we are working with education depts. To fix this Learn about our mission at includeher.au

We did some research on senior school science curricula across Australia. We looked at Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Environmental Science 🧬🧪✨🪴 And what we found was both alarming and disappointing. Only 1 female scientist is mentioned across all courses 😱
