The Last Something@thelastsomething.bsky.social

Tom knew first impressions were important He only had one shot at this Tom had been watching her. Studying her. Loving her He was finally ready When she stepped out of her house, he was waiting She watched as Tom smiled, put the gun to his head, and pulled the trigger #HorrorWritersChat

You scurry out into the open world, only to witness a mountain of flesh. A monument to what's left of sentience. Its limbs number in the thousands. Its hunger is unfathomable. You are but a speck in its shadow, yet it reaches for you all the same. You will join the rest. #HorrorWritersChat

Alexander Hay@alexanderhay.myatproto.social

Every story has an ending, but horror doesn't always have happy ones. Q4: What sort of very short (mouse-sized?) story can you write which has a sting in the tale? #HorrorWritersChat

In my horror mythos, there are ancient eldritch horrors called Exiled Ones who find their way into our universe (and others). They take different forms, but often try to blend in by wearing our skin. Doppelgangers and the uncanny valley are where I live. #HorrorWritersChat #WriteSky

Alexander Hay@alexanderhay.myatproto.social

Right, you 'orrible little (James) Herberts. El Gato de Ulthar is hot on your furry little heels, and you're lunch if they get you. Are you a Mrs. Frisby, a Matthias or just plain taking the Mickey? Q3: What do you define as a monster in your horror, and how do you make it work? #HorrorWritersChat

Given my penchant for cosmic horror, I like to lean into the fear of the unknown, sheer intensity, descents into madness, and of course, trauma. My horror can be shocking and gory, but my hope is that the elements above are the ones that stick with you. #HorrorWritersChat #HorrorAuthor

Alexander Hay@alexanderhay.myatproto.social

What is a human world to a little mouse but horror? Q2: How do you make your horror stories horrible? Is it detail, emotion, pathos, fear or even comedy? Or something else? How do YOU make the punters quiver? #HorrorWritersChat

Hello fellow horror authors! 🐀🧀 Prior to being a mouse, I was a cosmic horror writer with a vast interconnected horror mythos called the Synaptic Sprawl. I was also working on a cosmic horror novel set in that broader universe. 👀 #HorrorWritersChat #WriteSky #HorrorAuthor

Alexander Hay@alexanderhay.myatproto.social

Good morrow, my dear little vermin. It's the weekly Horror Writers Chat! This week, I will be taking you down a rabbit hole, or to precise, into a mouse hole. Soo-ooo-ooo... Q1: Introduce yourselves, gorge on that Stinking Bishop, and tell us what sort of fiction you write. #HorrorWritersChat

For me, a day rarely lasts 24 hours. Some days last five minutes, other last ten years. There are days when I feel like everything is terrible. But the next day, I might feel like a million bucks. So, do me a favor: Stay another day. You might surprised at just how good tomorrow can be. 💛

Here's my pitch! Title: The War Within --- Every night is another battle. A barren landscape, littered with corpses. I fight sleep until it takes me, and my war begins anew. Fighting for every inch. Endless, senseless killing. And all the enemy soldiers wear my face. #HorrorWritersChat

Gree_@greethewriter.bsky.social

A shudder jolts through your body. You look at him. His last tears roll down his muddy cheeks. He is dead. Take your answers to questions 2 & 3, and pitch us a horror story about a war from a perspective you would consider the most frightening! #HorrorWritersChat

War alone is scary enough, but I would lean toward the supernatural, only because it boggles my mind how cruel humans can be toward one another. I'd like to think the purveyors of warfare from the past were simply possessed, but reality is far more terrifying. #HorrorWritersChat #HorrorAuthor

Gree_@greethewriter.bsky.social

His cries are smothered by explosions and screams. You're just an assistant. Your eyes dart for the doctor. Where is she? How- War permeates between horror genres. What of it would you make supernatural? Or would you keep it grounded in reality? #HorrorWritersChat

I think for me, it would be through nightmares. Perhaps they relive memories through an even more twisted lens. And like back then, they just want to wake up. They're hoping and praying it's all a dream. #HorrorWritersChat #HorrorAuthor

Gree_@greethewriter.bsky.social

His shivering, tear-dimmed eyes stare at you. At that red cross plastered over your chest. You can't breathe. He's your first. Wars scar soldiers' souls forever. How would you explore that in a psychological horror about war? The loss of self, the flashbacks, or something else? #HorrorWritersChat

Best day of the week! 🎉 Greetings all! Bradley Ramsey here, writer of cosmic horror and other horror-genre mashups. Favorite depiction of war is in The Darkness for Xbox 360. The levels set in the trenches are truly terrifying. #HorrorWritersChat #AuthorSky #HorrorAuthor

Gree_@greethewriter.bsky.social

And there you are again. With a blink, flames scythe across the copse, now a deep trench. Explosions rattle your skull, blurring your vision. Your hand is heavy. With his head. Again. Tell us who you are, what do you write, and what is your favourite depiction of war in horror? #HorrorWritersChat

So, my current cosmic horror WIP has six POVs, and there's a point where one of them changes. It's the same person, but the mind has been swapped. I actually wrote the chapter the other night, so next time he shows up, the name on the chapter will be different. 👀 #HorrorWritersChat #HorrorWriter

The harvest was good this year. Too good. When they find out about the sacrifices, a bloodbath will follow. Abundance, after all, comes at a cost. #HorrorWritersChat #HorrorAuthor #WriteSky #microfiction

I think for me it's the final act that is finally ripening. I've been chipping away at the draft lately, and the other day I got hit with a vivid scene from the final chapter. It's all finally coming together. Just took ten years. 😅 #HorrorWritersChat #AuthorSky #HorrorAuthor

Love this answer. It reminds me of a story I read over on Substack a while back where someone used roses growing from a dead body, and I still think that's some incredibly haunting imagery.

What A Charming House@whatacharminghouse.bsky.social

Helllooo, spooky folks. I'm K.A. Hall. I write psychological gothic horror set in rural small town(s). The creepiest thing growing where it doesn't belong? A rose bush growing from out my mouth. You know, the really thorny kind that already has aphids attacking the buds #HorrorWritersChat

Hello everyone! Bradley Ramsey here, writer of cosmic horror, sci-fi horror, and comedy horror as well. I have two answers: the first is life. There are organisms we've found living and growing in places they shouldn't. Second is potatoes (see the image below 😆) #HorrorWritersChat #AuthorSky

Fellow writers, a quick reminder: Failure is a badge of honor, because most people don’t even try. So write the thing. Even if you’re not certain. Especially if you’re not certain. It might work out. It might not. Either way, you’ll be glad you tried. 🙏 #writingcommunity #authorsky

Saw someone mention Kamelot earlier, so I'd do a horror story inspired by their track "The Haunting (Somewhere in time)" The concept would be an anthology about two souls who are reincarnated over and over again, only for their love to end in tragedy each time they meet. #HorrorWritersChat

James Ryan@jamesryan.bsky.social

#HorrorWritersChat Question Four: “Lay down all thoughts Surrender to the void It is shining…” Conversely, what would the plot be for a horror story from you based on a particular piece of music?

Fantastic pitch. I'd read it! 👏👏

Mary Wyrd (she/her)@marywyrd.bsky.social

#HorrorWritersChat Finnish musician Ville Valo is secretly a vampire. He’s working on set creating the music for a vampire tv series while trying to hide his vampiric nature from the cast and crew.

The members of my favorite band of all time, Poets of the Fall, find themselves booked to play a gig for the Lovecraftian gods of my horror mythos. If they can make them dance, they'll be allowed to leave with their lives. I believe in them. 🙏 #HorrorWritersChat #AuthorSky #writingcommunity

James Ryan@jamesryan.bsky.social

#HorrorWritersChat Question Three: “No matter how he tried, he could not break free And the worms ate into his brain…” Pitch me a story where you pair up a musician of your choice in a horror tale of your choosing.

I've got "musical pairings" that I do on Substack. Every post includes a song you can listen to afterward, as the proverbial credits roll. Sometimes I'll include music or lyrics in the story itself as well, like my piece titled "Crossroads Rock and Roll." #HorrorWritersChat #AuthorSky

James Ryan@jamesryan.bsky.social

#HorrorWritersChat Question Two: “Big black shape with eyes of fire Telling people their desire…” Does music play a part in your horror writing, and if so, how do you use it in the story?

Here we go! 🤘🎸 Bradley Ramsey here, writer of cosmic horror and horror mashups that terrify and intrigue in equal measure. When I'm writing horror, I like to have some EDM or what I lovingly call "gut-wrenching dubstep" playing. Music as violent and eclectic as my work. 😌 #HorrorWritersChat

James Ryan@jamesryan.bsky.social

#HorrorWriteresChat Question One: “All the best freaks are here Please stop staring at me…” This week, we’re asking about the music of the night, the songs on Lestat’s playlist, and all that jazz… Introduce yourself, the horror you write, and your favorite music to listen to.

Shout-out to the Old (Real) Ones, haha. 😆 Love this response from my friend, @gunsmile.bsky.social. 👏👏
