In his acceptance speech, Lula says he will work to regulate digital platforms in Brazil. “Digital crimes must be dealt with like real-life crimes.” This comes after Meta directly interfered with the Brazilian elections, favouring Flávio Bolsonaro.

Oligopoly also exists in academic publishing! Not just mass media!

Maris Kreizman@maris.bsky.social

Science is inherently political and when our government is actively hostile to science as a whole, publications should be able to write about it without being censored. Alas. www.thenation.com/article/soci...

Every so often, I am reminded of my experiences as a social worker in COVID-19 pandemic, including running a weekly online grief support group for 18 months. It all feel so far removed from the later stage PhD student life & acadmia, but the lessons & wisdom it taught me come in handy sometimes.

Tonight was fun. CUNY's digital humanities community is lovely & I am grateful to be a part of its capacious self-definition & porous boundaries. Lots has changed since I did my first DHI lightning talk in April 2023, when I was a HASTAC Scholar exploring AI image generation & social work Twitter.

"CSWE is rewriting educational standards to fit a political climate hostile to the profession's core values." This sentence sums up the draft 2029 Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards that the Council on Social Work Education released last week.

These only holds if you 1) think US public services should divert precious human capital to satisfy your agents 2) that this infra already exists or can be built swiftly 3) that somehow removing these frictions are a good thing at breakneck pace. The cited paper doesn't even say this.

Ethan Mollick@emollick.bsky.social

A consequential choice will be made soon by government and companies as they are increasingly flooded with agentic AI inquiries that overcome the frictions that gated access (see the graphs - it has already started!) Two options: do you make services worse or better as a result?

"An October 2nd story in the University of Michigan student newspaper, The Michigan Daily, revealed that a conservative PAC called America Next offered College Republicans $200 to travel to an upcoming El-Sayed town hall in Flint to “boo” him and ask him inflammatory questions"

SCOOP: 'Tommy' from the now-viral exchange with Abdul El-Sayed is Thomas Teepell, a former staffer for Republican Senator Josh Hawley with close ties to Christian Nationalist Sean Feucht. He's the son of a former Bobby Jindal staffer whose consultant work was instrumental in getting Hawley elected.

Fascism came for #SocialWork accreditation last night. CSWE intends to surrender. We are removing ADEI, human rights, and social justice from our accreditation standards in 2029.

Remember our history. Learn from it. Refuse to let it repeat itself. Keep fighting for a just world. #SocialWork

Justin S Harty@justinsharty.bsky.social

Is the 2029 EPAS our new loyalty oath? 🧵 CSWE’s first draft strips out the 2022 anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion framework. “Oppression” and “anti-racist” appear nowhere in it. CSWE says our values haven’t changed. Only the words have.

I participated in a small virtual gathering today reflecting on @hastac.bsky.social. It will be missed, & I'm grateful that @hastacscholars.bsky.social was an early & formative part of PhD my experience. Digital Fridays were fun, as was the collab book review. HASTAC 2023 was a fantastic conference.

Cathy Davidson@cathyndavidson.bsky.social

Today, we announced that HASTAC is closing as an interactive social network after 25+ years of innovative, exciting, and equitable learning, scholarship, and community focusing on technology and its impact on society. educational-cultural-institutions.hastac.hcommons.org/2026/09/29/s...

To me, HASTAC was a space to think through weird side projects that didn't have the same kind of weight & disciplinary heft of a dissertation. Where I could collaborate w/ PhD & Master's students from a range of disciplines & fields. Where I could learn & practice critical making & tech inquiry.

"In the roughly 10 months since North America’s largest wildlife overpass opened across Interstate 25 between Larkspur and Monument, drivers have hit two animals, according to state wildlife managers and transportation officials — a 91% drop."
