I’m attending a hybrid conference where online and in-person attendees type their questions into a meeting platform. It turns out this has the added benefit of stopping those annoying more-of-a-comment-than-a-question monologues and multipart questions. 🥳

The 30 years of measurements in an ICOS station in mainland Denmark show the beech forest has captured an increasing amount of carbon annually, because the growing season lengthens with the changing climate. However, during the drought in 2018, the carbon sink was 25% smaller. #ICOS2026SC

ICOS fixed ocean stations can support our understanding of the carbon cycle in the land-ocean continuum. Signals from river runoff events were detectable at Paloma and Miramare stations in the Gulf of Trieste. Vincenzo Alessandro Laudicella from @ogsit.bsky.social at #ICOS2026SC

"ICOS is a bastion against interest-driven attacks to the science-system," says ICOS's emeritus director @wlkutsch.bsky.social. Consequently, ICOS task is: - Science-based standardisation - Open, free and fair data - Responsible communication and outreach.

Alisa Krasnova from University of Tartu presents 5 years of GHG flux data from a drained peatland forest in Estonia. The forest was a net sink until 2024, but became a source in 2025 after long periods of rain and flooding. Shows drained peatlands are vulnerable to climate variations. #ICOS2026SC

New way to determine ocean carbon sink - using 3 methods based on independent observations - shows the ocean sink is stronger than estimated by current models. It also confirms the stagnated land sink. To be published soon! In #ICOS2026SC by @neillmackay.bsky.social of @exeter.ac.uk.

It's the third and final day of ICOS Science Conference 2026! We have one last day of cutting edge research on #climatescience and #greenhousegases. Check out today's programme at a glance. #ICOS2026SC

A new model developed in @lsce-ipsl.bsky.social could allow estimating the climate impact on the European vegetation - utilising observations from 43 ICOS stations - in weeks rather than months or years, as presented by Otto Briner. #ICOS2026SC

At the #ICOS2026SC session on GHG observations in Africa, Alfred Otom presents preliminary results on carbon dynamics and GHG exchange in papyrus wetlands in Lake Victoria, Kenya. Data shows the ecosystem was a weak carbon sink in 2025, but lots of seasonal variability present.

Latest September measurements from ICOS Lampedusa station in the Mediterranean Sea show significantly higher water temperatures for the last few months. #ICOS20206SC

Carlotta Dentico presented a study at #ICOS2026SC revealing seasonal and interannual patterns of pCO2 variability in Southern Adriatic Pit. Results underscore its role as a weak carbon sink. Long-term data series acquired at the #EMSO & ICOS station IT-FOS-E2M3A were important in the analysis.

How can science feed into policy processes? #ICOS2026SC panel discusses with Lukas Emmenegger @empa-materials.bsky.social, Theresia Bilola @ICOS, Tufa Dinku, Johan Kuylenstierna, Ngongang Danube, and Connie O’Neill from @sei.org and Matthew Saunders from Trinity College as moderator. 1/2

The #ICOS2026SC panel's advice for scientists who would like their research to impact policy: - Find a science-policy framework or organisation to collaborate with, so that your results are included in the right pathways. - In policy-collab, be actitive and responsive to their needs. - Be patient.

💡When does a CO2 measurement becomes societal impact? Evi-Carita Riikonen from ICOS HO presents a two-pathway model Research Infrastructures can use to show how project outputs become services and knowledge for society #ICOS2026SC #ESFRI #NUBICOS #ICOScities @envri.bsky.social @ericforum.bsky.social

The #ICOSCities project developed urban GHG measurements, and e.g. confirmed the Paris emission reduction, tells Thomas Lauvaux from ICOS ATC, @lsce-ipsl.bsky.social. However, to reduce costs, improve the mid-cost sensors, and have networks run by cities are necessary for future. #ICOS2026SC

Day 2 of ICOS Science Conference 2026 is here! We are excited to pick up where we left off with another day of inspiring talks on all things #climatescience and #greenhousegases Feel like you're missing out? Keep up with the highlights using the hashtag #ICOS2026SC

"An artist only needs oil paints, a canvas and eddy covariance data"✨ Concluding day 1 of #ICOS2026SC, an evening of communicating science and climate activism through art at Skissernas Museum with Teemu Lehmusruusu and Leena Järvi, Liliana Scapucci (@lilliscapucci.bsky.social), and Didier Voisin.

Tatkiewicz also took the audience through the history of CAPASOS' development, from a plastic box full of wires tested in the university pond to an instrument operating autonomously in the Atlantic, showing just how much work, engineering and resilience it takes to develop new technologies 👏 (3/3)

“The ICOS data is the most important data for the observation-based emission verification system we are building in Germany. We couldn’t do anything without it,” says Andrea Kaiser-Weiss from @dwdderwetterdienst.bsky.social, presenting the first results of the German ITMS project. #ICOS2026SC

Emilio Baud Fraile from @inrae-france.bsky.social presenting preliminary work on the use of data from 5 ICOS stations to 1) evaluate the ORCHIDEE-GM model, 2) assess the impacts of grassland cutting on the albedo effect (rate of sunlight reflection). Nice use of ICOS data for modelling. #ICOS2026SC

Sam Hammer from ICOS Radiocarbon Laboratory presents a new ICOS capability to estimate and model the 14CO2 European fossil fuel emissions. This could also be used to independently verify the national emission inventories. #ICOS2026SC #inventory #emissions

Coming at you from day 1 of ICOS Science Conference 2026! Let's see what attendees are looking forward to this week #ICOS2026SC

Decades-long-measurements in two sites in Switzerland show that the recent very warm and dry years have reduced the carbon sink of these spruce forests. With dry air, the trees rely mostly on water deep in the soil > will be more vulnerable in future. By @nbuchmann.bsky.social @ethz.ch. #ICOS2026SC
