A less cute face.

Kit Jaspering@iamboneitis.bsky.social

Like everyone on Earth: I like a cute face. So, oftentimes, when working on a page (at any stage) I'll go ahead and just complete a character that I like the look of so that they can "keep me company" as I grind out the rest of the inks, colors, etc... (Kyra and Cody, thus, get drawn first a lot.)

Whacky Woo-Hoo Pizza Man-esque panel. Turning in big monster skulls is how hunters make money in "Vampire Hunter Alone." Military, like Miss Kyra, get wages instead. Sorry for the glare in the upper left, photographing these things where fluorescent lights are present is a nightmare.

More pages and panels taking place in VHA's version of Detroit. I drew the layouts for these pages in late 2024 and have a different approach for backgrounds now. These look neat, but the setting gets drawn a little differently after chapter 3 (I'm always refining, terminal math-brain sufferer).

This is a good example of what future backgrounds will look like. I took the manga route and make extensive use of photography. We don't have those photo catalogs available over here that the manga-ka do (nor can I afford to hire assistants), so I scout and photograph the locations myself. It's fun~

Cody's big introduction panel/page. He might just look like "cute dog guy," but a lot went into creating Cody. His mannerisms, attitude, and even the way he moves are all the result of a lot of trial & error/refinement!

Ch. 2 page I got done coloring the other day. We get more of Martin's beautiful arms (The always-welcome "Is this the way to the gym?"-pose makes an appearance) and a background that took way too long to draw (this setting's Detroit) looms in the distance. The gate kinda looks like Domo-Kun...

Another panel from ch. 2 of "Vampire Hunter Alone," a WebToon that doesn't really look like a WebToon (which is its greatest strength and weakness). I think it's going to make for a very nice looking book. *I* think the script is good too, but I wrote it, and I don't have a Vertigo-Tier editor.

More of these panels, really wish I could safely work on this stuff more often but I had to manually operate an analog milling machine the other day for three and a half hours and my hands/arms hurt for days because of it. Gotta do it to get my robotics technician certification, though. It's rough!

Working on another comic about everyone's favorite subject: robotics and manufacturing! HOORAY!!! (Genuinely, if you let it, it can be one of the most interesting things you ever learn about.)

Been doing a fair bit of reading while I wait for my hands/arms to recover (tests being months apart has made for a slow, painful, and boring year), and sometimes my choice of reading material is a little too on point.

More panel pulls from ch. 3 color correction. Lots of Martin either dealing with a giant glowy-eyed-wolfdog or in the aftermath of getting hit by a car (he *is* 3/4's whitetail deer, so it's just something that was bound to happen).

Heading off to the event in a few!

My local Drink & Draw used this "Medievil" fan-art I did to advertise this Sunday's drawing event at Dozer Coffee Co. in Ann Arbor, MI. If you're local: come on down from 10AM-1PM and get your art on! We DO allow skeletons (but ants will be dealt with swiftly and with extreme prejudice).

Something I now get to think about a lot because both my hands are pretty fucked from ulnar nerve damage is "If I had played less/no video games: how much more time with my hands would I have had to work on my comics?" I don't have an exact answer, but I know it's "a LOT of hours."

Hit my late 30s & now if I think about playing video games it triggers a disgust response. Don't think this is a universal feeling nor do I think it is a medium without merit. But I'm paralyzed by the thought of how much time I spent on them when I could have been doing something more constructive.

My hands/arms can get better, but getting into the necessary doctor's appointments to get help (physical therapy isn't cutting it, daily strengthening and stretching isn't enough, though I have put on noticeable muscle) has taken months of waiting. Lots of time to try and not imagine the worst.

Panel pulls from a round of color correction/cleanup last night. Panels are from "Vampire Hunter Alone" Ch. 3 (which is completely drawn and colored, ch. 2 is not fully colored yet).

Since I've been able to draw for about 1-2 hours a day, I've started coloring VHA ch. 2 again. Pages like this are cool, but they're also why I've just taken to photo bashing more recent chapters. It's the only way I'll get this done before I'm dead.

I can only draw for about 1-2 hours a day, currently due to my hand/arm issues, so this title page took 3 sessions to draw. This is for a 9 page ch. that shows a bit of Martin & Cody's time as soldiers on the front lines of the Great Lakes Reclamation Campaign. They're 2 years into their tour here.

In this world, our characters are drafted at age 13 to fight because the war is not going particularly well. Martin, a Michigan native, is pictured here next to a Battery-Blade: a heated, short sword that can potentially inflict wounds that the Fish-Vampires can't regenerate from.

Cody, meanwhile, hails from Kansas (which is much safer than Michigan) and a family of Vampire herders; a job that entails herding schools of Vampires away from population centers. Cody's only 11, but he wants to earn money for his family fighting in a more dangerous area, so he lies about his age.

I mean... it doesn't LOOK like my hands and arms are all messed up. When I looked all schlubby, my hands never hurt. Do I need to be in worse shape? Have I flown too close to the graphite-sun?!?

I wasn't the biggest Dolly fan... BUT I have been to "Dolly Parton's Dixie Stampede" in Branson, Missouri twice, and it is a really awesome time. Tim Curry, I mostly knew from "Red Alert," which is better than any film credit could ever hope to be.

Had to wait to upload this commission because it was a gift (hence the mattes and framing, I cut the mattes myself), but it was happily received yesterday. This one was a lot of work of the traditional ink and marker kind, but it's the exact kind of thing I like to draw. (1/5)

I drew a pain progression diagram so I could talk to Doctor's more efficiently and, at the very least, they've given me the go ahead to keep hitting the gym so I don't go insane. I've also been using a pair of "lazy glasses" to read the stupidly dense books I give myself as homework. (4/5)

Right now, I can draw for about an hour a day before I have to stop. Some days, I still take completely off from drawing. I still plan to finish my comic projects, but progress is pretty halted currently. It should get better, but it's going to take time. I'll be around. (5/5)

In news of the bummer variety: I can't really be taking commissions right now. I haven't been actively advertising it for years, but if people knew to ask, I would generally accept. I'm turning 38 next month and have managed to finally fuck up my arms/hands from 20+ years of daily drawing. (2/5)

I'm not sure exactly what it is, but the likely culprits are ulnar nerve damage and/or a herniated disc. Working through it and it might heal on its own, but it is taking its damn time. I have to use my hands as little as possible, and I've never watched so many movies in my life. (3/5)

Mailed out two extremely-packaged pictures today (matted and framed). I wish I could show them off, but they're part of a surprise for the commissioner's SO. So no can do until then. In not as cool of news: I won't be drawing much for the rest of this month (possibly longer), I'll explain... (1/3)

After drawing, painting, and inking nearly every day for twenty years straight, I've developed a hell of an RSI (Repetitive Stress Injury) in my dominant arm. I've been battling it since January, but the steps I was taking weren't drastic enough, and the dang thing keeps getting worse. (2/3)

So I won't be doing a lot of drawing in the near future, at the very least until this thing heals up. It should heal, but not drawing has been incredibly boring (now I know how addicts feel) and genuinely difficult. I've got other things to do in the meantime, but I'll be around. (3/3)

Did a quick drawing of what Martin would look like at age 13 (when he was drafted) for a short chapter I just wrote. In the world of VHA: you get drafted into the Great Lakes Reclamation Campaign at age 13. Compared to his 17 year old self: he's less chiseled, cuter, and his antlers are smaller.
