If we're not free to think for ourselves, to challenge ideas, ideologies, religion, or to choose/change our own beliefs, then we are not free at all. Freedom of religion or belief sits at the very heart of who we are as human beings. #InternationalFreedomofReligionorBeliefDay

On 24 October 1945, the Charter of the United Nations came into force. Its opening words, ‘We the peoples of the United Nations’, set out an organisation meant to serve people everywhere, not just the governments that signed it. Humanists were among those who helped shape it and its agencies.

For United Nations Day, we’ve gone back over 80 years of humanist magazines and newsletters, now held in the New Humanist archive, to find out how humanists helped build the UN, how they pushed it to do better, and how Humanists UK carries that work on today. humanists.uk/2026/10/24/w...

Delighted to be at the Embassy of Ireland (where they fly the UN flag all year round) for the reception to mark UN Day this evening. Imperfect as all institutions are, the multilateral system remains the only hope for peace and justice in our world.

Rules are boring. Make your own. It's your wedding. That means you decide what to wear, what to say, the location of your ceremony, and everything else – down to the last detail. That's what our ceremonies are about. That's what our celebrants excel at.

Humanist campaigning against so-called conversion therapy has gone on display, showing decades of political inaction on banning it. Conversion practices, ‘conversion therapy’ or colloquially ‘praying the gay away’, are harmful practices aimed at changing who LGBT+ people are or who they love.

Humanists have been campaigning against them for decades, and last night Queer Britain unveiled a new exhibit highlighting the fight to ban them.

Today would have been Maureen Duffy’s 93rd birthday, the first since her death in May. Novelist, poet, campaigner, and a humanist her whole adult life, she was one of the first women in British public life to be open about being a lesbian, and a patron of Humanists UK until she died. 🧵

In 1977 Mary Whitehouse warned of a ‘gay humanist lobby’. Activists decided that if it was so feared it had better exist, and founded the Gay Humanist Group, now @lgbthumanists.bsky.social, with Duffy as its 1st President. As she put it, ‘morality is far too important to be left to the theologians.’

Her humanism was an ethics of compassion: imagination to identify with others, and reason to give it ‘some bony structure’. She campaigned for writers, animals, free expression and LGBT+ equality for decades. Everyone should know her name. humanists.uk/2026/10/21/r...

humanists.ukHappy birthday, Maureen Duffy: remembering the humanist, poet, and LGBT+ trailblazerToday would have been Maureen Duffy's 93rd birthday. We remember the author of The Microcosm, first President of the Gay Humanist Group, and one of Britain's most prominent humanists.

Her novel The Microcosm (1966) was the first British novel to depict a lesbian community. It was banned in Ireland, South Africa, and the Vatican. In 1967, weeks before sex between men was partially decriminalised, she spoke openly on BBC television about being a lesbian.

If and when we are lucky enough to find ourselves secure and in good health (Virginia herself was rarely in good health), then it is all we can do to hug the present moment and cherish the people closest to us.

Virginia Woolf was a second-generation humanist. Her father, the critic Leslie Stephen, was a founding member of ours and the President of our West London group. Her mother, Julia Duckworth, was a model, women's rights advocate, and an activist for agnosticism.

Woolf had no religious beliefs, but she did say this: 'I cling to my tiny philosophy: to hug the present moment.' We think that's a good philosophy to live by - there's no use living in the past, or distracting ourselves with worries about the future.

We help people who leave high-control religious groups. It's life-changing work. So often, people who come to us have nowhere else to turn. The BBC R4 documentary 'Faithless' tells the stories of four people we've supported through @faith2faithless.bsky.social. ⬇ www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m...

It's amazing to see so many people moved by our work. Every donation helps us reach someone who is leaving a high-control religion and doesn’t know where else to turn, and make sure they find a community of people who’ll look out for them. No one has to go through it alone.
