Nigeria announces its first Ebola case in 12 years Also, Kenyan officials confirm a 9th case in that country, 4 of which have been healthcare workers. Read more: https://bit.ly/4eMNYGm 📷: EU/ECHO/Isabel Coello

2/ Perhaps most tragic of all, this “Ebola as business” narrative causes pregnant women and mothers to shun maternity wards and clinics where their children can be checked for Ebola and receive routine vaccinations.

3/ The result is that many Ebola transmission chains in the DRC are going undetected, increasing the likelihood that the virus will spread to its neighbours, triggering a regional epidemic.

“Rumors that the Ebola outbreak is a hoax are widespread. My colleagues working on community outreach in Bunia told me that a mother did not take her children to a clinic to be checked for Ebola when they had a fever because she believed the Ebola response was a moneymaking scheme.”

Incredible, what a contrast with the 2013-16 West Africa Ebola outbreak that was debated on the floor of the UN and prompted a massive medical and humanitarian response.

If you had told me a year ago there would be an Ebola outbreak of this scale and the world would take this little notice, I probably would not have believed you.

4/... Los Angeles by diseased squirrels, not rats. Having established a foothold in the Mexican quarter of the city, it morphed into the pneumonic form of the disease.

5/ The 1924 LA outbreak is a reminder that when information is uncertain, we should be wary of jumping to conclusions. Medical history teaches us that the next pandemic is unlikely to come from a familiar pathogen but from one to which we have yet to be acquainted.

2/ Something very similar happened in 1924 when plague struck Los Angeles. Then, as in Russia today, Los Angeles civic and business leaders initially blamed the outbreak on a “malignant” form of pneumonia and the Californian newspapers tried to hush-up the truth.

3/ But the East Coast newspapers had no such reservations, reporting that 21 Angelenos had fallen victim to the “Black Death”. Unlike the outbreak of bubonic plague that had visited San Francisco at the turn of the century, the pathogen was almost certainly introduced to...

Uncanny! Almost 50 years to the day of the first Legionnaires’ Disease outbreak in Philadelphia a new outbreak hits the Upper East Side of New York. And, just as in 1976, the outbreak coincides with US celebrations marking the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence 1/

I recommend Carl Zimmer's book Air-Borne for the deep history that led to this shocking mistake. It wasn't just a matter of "oh it was a new virus, we didn't know anything about it" - there's a far more profound lesson than that for how science happens. www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...

Our understanding of the origin of COVID-19, while still incomplete, is one of the most well-supported scientific theories of any pandemic. When it comes to “Scientific Freedom”, it must be based in science and evidence - this is the opposite, platforming pseudoscience instead.

"Russian flu," the pandemic that hit in 1977, bears an evolutionary signature of having emerged from a lab, perhaps as part of a failed vaccine effort. Covid, mpox, Ebola, and other influenza pandemics don't. Here's my story on a new way to trace the origins of pandemics. Gift link: nyti.ms/46N0W33

I am happy Gov. Kathy Hochul took action to defend COVID vaccine access in the face of the anti-science attacks from Robert Kennedy Jr. and his crank allies like Marty Makary and Jay Bhattacharya. But I note that it’s only for ages 3 and up. The CDC’s original guidance was 6 months and up.
