Perhaps the Rangers will wheel Reimer out again; if they don't he'll have an impressive single-season showing of +164% G/xG. (The league took one of the saves away, so only had the five saves in the end)

[puts on special fancystat cloak] Three goals on nine shots on goal is known to the enlightened as "not great"

Reimer was yanked in the first intermission; did the Rangers come out strong in the second, at home, to show their new goalie and their fans that they could still contest the game, being down only two with two periods to go? They did not.

Even ignoring the quoted post the ant thing is a neat stats koan for "you will need some domain knowledge even for the absolute simplest calculations"

An abbreviated Rangers debut for James Reimer. Dylan Garand is in goal to start the second period. Reimer allowed three goals on 9 shots.

Apparently, according to the fine folks at "Brand Bro LLC", I would make more money on this upcoming Black Friday if I changed the name of my website from HockeyViz to Hockeywiz. It's hard to believe that Brand Bros LLC would be just giving away this vital information, for free.

Might be the most beautiful fall in a bunch of years, to be honest. Every street in town prettier than the last.

This maple tree in Middle Musquodoboit was showing off yesterday. It was a gorgeous autumn day.

Exactly, this is why the task view of visualization doesn't work. You back yourself into a corner where calculating things for people would always be better, so there must be another reason we use vis. To me we use vis to communicate/understand structure and relationships, not "retrieve values"

if you ever happen to see someone post a joke you don't understand or discuss a subject you aren't familiar with, you are well within your right to complain, and perhaps even scold them if necessary. you are their customer and you have rights

Around halfway through the second the Ducks just decided they felt like winning and by halfway through the third they had won.

Too early for this much Flyers.

I never tire of pointing out the picket fence that always forms in the bottom right of these sorts of plots. Korpisalo - Jones - Talbot - Bobrovsky forming the edge of "if you were better, you would play more".

Micah McCurdy@hockeyviz.com

Since he entered the league in 2015, only Shesterkin and Sorokin have better per-shot results (vs non-trivial shot quantities) than Hellebuyck, and no goalie has shouldered even close to the amount of workload.

From time to time you see the ghost of this sort of selection bias cropping up in the form of "does he play better when he faces more shots??" takes; when you pull the bedsheet off them you always find a mix of "he certainly faces fewer when he gets yanked" / score effects / selection bias.

Selection bias can be sneak sneak sneaky but in sports there is almost always a man (sometimes, for diversity, multiple men on a committee) who wears a hat with "Selector" embroidered into the side, compleat with decorative "selection bias" feather in the band.

Chance rates at 5v5 are unusually stretched out along the good/bad axis this year (Florida notwithstanding) and i don't know if it's just coincidence or not.

Point projections over the past fortnight. There were some injuries caught in the machinery like old mail but I got 'em all worked out, I think. See if you can notice the big one.

I made a thread of some great reasons to subscribe to my website.

One wonderful thing you can do with your money is give some of it to me every month, by subscribing to my frankly excellent website, hockeyviz.com/subscribe. This is wonderful in two ways, because I get your money and you get beautiful understanding of hockey. This thread has some details!

The free game of the night on HockeyViz is Panthers at Senators. Personally, I'll be hoping for a huge game from the superstar forward returning to the club that made him a household name. I know not everyone will agree with me, but I love Lars Eller so much. hockeyviz.com/game/2026020...

Hate the Tkachuks all you want from your couch, but you can tell their teammates respect them by the way they showed up for tonight’s game.
