Kyiv came under a Russian drone attack on Wednesday morning, with strikes hitting near the central railway station as crowds of commuters were present. Ukrzaliznytsia confirmed that the main station building itself was not damaged.

So it's official. EU sanctions on Russia are no longer only for the benefit of Ukraine's existential fight against Moscow's invasion - they are now currency for EU capitals to trade for prisoners. Welcome to the Brussels bazaar.

Good FT take on Canada-EU by @henryjfoy.ft.com and @andybounds.bsky.social. Announcing "associate membership" has a lovely feel, but the reality is likely to be a slog. Germans *on the record* already saying they don't like the term "associate" anything. www.ft.com/content/7b1a...

Ursula von der Leyen has endorsed Mark Carney’s pitch for Canada to become an “associate member” of the EU, in a bold proposal to deepen ties under pressure from the US and China. Bold because 1) that status doesn't exist and 2) EU capitals don't support such a move as.ft.com/r/a6a004b5-9...

Why is the EU failing to implement Mario Draghi's prescriptions to fix its flatlining economy? Two years on from Draghi's competitiveness report, only a fraction of his proposals have been adopted. Is Brussels choosing 'slow agony' over economic reform? as.ft.com/r/1f2f54d4-a...

Draghi's proposals to reform the EU's financial, debt, defence, energy and telecoms markets are hailed by policymakers as the urgent medicine to complete the bloc's much-vaunted but underperforming single market. But behind the rhetoric, capitals insist on protecting their narrow national interests

Discussions among EU countries to dismantle the EEAS were first reported by the FT in June, and confirmed in a Franco-German document circulated this month. Now the Commission has begun internal studies as to how it could be executed, ahead of a debate on the issue between EU leaders next month
